The second punch in a double whammy of stopgap releases in the fourth quarter of 2000, My Kind of Christmas appeared on the shelves two months after Mi Reflejo, Christina's Latin reworking of her debut album. My Kind of Christmas actually has more new material than Mi Reflejo, and Aguilera responds in kind, turning in passionate performances throughout the 11-song album. She can teeter on the edge of being too passionate, belting out when she should lay back, but the power of her voice, no matter how diva-esque she may be, remains remarkable; she needs to learn restraint, but she's clearly a better singer than her peers. Of course, My Kind of Christmas remains a holiday album, filled with covers of standards (from "Oh Holy Night" to "The Christmas Song" to "Merry Christmas, Baby") and a handful of obligatory new songs. None of the new songs are knockouts, but "Christmas Time" and "This Year" are pretty solid pieces of dance-pop, even if the marvelously titled "Xtina's Xmas" (easily the best name of any new holiday song of 2000) is a 90-second collage trifle that doesn't live up to its promise. But, hey -- filler is part of a holiday record, and there's actually not too much of it here. Instead, it's pretty tight, entertaining seasonal dance-pop. It may not add too much to Christina's catalog, but it does suggest that she may not be a mere one-album wonder. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine There's a lot to be said for the pop Christmas album as cultural artifact. Ever since the days of the crooners, the intersection between pop song and yuletide fare has been the point where art, commerce, and ritual meet. The bigger the pop icon, the more this holds true, so its no surprise that teen-pop mega-sensation Christina Aguilera's MY KIND OF CHRISTMAS proves to be a solid addition to the holiday album tradition. She tackles a mixture of the expected Christmas material ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Angels We Have Heard on High") and more contemporary material, including a song penned by pop wizard Dianne Warren ("These Are Special Times"). The production approach is a similar mix of convention and modernism, but the unifying thread is the consistently unerring vocal performances this seemingly infallible teen diva delivers throughout. So far so good.. Christina's 3rd in studio album (if you may) turns out to be more like a "studio" album rather than a Christmas album. There are 11 songs on this album many of which are good but Christina tends to put too much emphasis on the vocal technique and the singing process than just feeling the music and singing it for what it is-Christmas songs. I think she's a good soul singer but this album reflects that she wants to sing a lot like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Not that Houston and Carey are bad they are excellent artists as well. Christina focuses too much on dance type songs and not really "ballads" unless you count re-doing the traditional songs. Most of her own productions are up-beat songs which is not really what I expected. The album didn't make me feel like it was the holiday season because the background and her back up singers just didn't sing in the right tone I guess. It's a vast contrast to say Mariah Carey's (Merry Christmas) album which made me feel very joyful and feel the holiday season. Maybe Christina didn't do such a good job because she was also working on her album "Mi reflejo" at about the same time and didn't have the feel of Christmas just yet. Her title track "This Christmas" seems pretty good at first but it may tire you out if you are not a big fan of her music. The best track I think on the album is "Have Your Self a Merry little Christmas" that is a great ballad and she really shows off her vocal capabilities on the song. It shows she can really sing well when she wants to. Again, she does seem to lean toward the Mariah and Whitney-ish sides of music which is ok but I still think she should have just done it in her own style like the fellow divas have. Another great song on this album is"The christmas song". It's sung very well and with much feeling and warmth. I think if you like her previous music you should buy this album but if you don't or you are kind of debating for or against it, it's best to download some of the songs from Napster and see if you like what you hear. Overall though, give her credit for making a Christmas album becuase it's not that bad at all. Submitted by a reviewer (Torrance, California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Christina tries to be Mariah with this Christmas album Everybody knows that Christina Aguilera thinks she's the new Mariah Carey, and this album only shows it more. The girl sounds bad on this and it has nothing special to hear. Submitted by Joshua (Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.
