$9.55 Principally recorded live at the Tropicana Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada from March 30-April 1, 1970. Originally released on Liberty (11006). Includes liner notes by Paul Werth.
The inclusion of the Paul Simon title cut (which is pretty catchy) and an 11-minute, four-song "Midnight Cowboy Medley" may make one think that this is a fairly commercial Buddy Rich big-band disc. But the arrangements are by Bill Holman, Don Piestrup ...

$12.59 For the epic horse-race adventure Hidalgo, Oscar winning composer James Newton-Howard has somehow managed to create the first worldbeat cowboy score. By taking equal parts Lawrence of Arabia, Dances With Wolves, and a whole lot of Aaron Copland, Newton-Howard manages to seamlessly bend the styles to his will, resulting in a fresh, yet familiar slice of old-fashioned film scoring. The "Main Title" begins suspiciously, echoing Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings theme, before easing into a middle-eastern motif on "Arriving in the Desert." "The Race Begins" bursts out of the gate with heroic brass and swirling strings, employing the inevitable "Rodeo," with a hoof-clopping pizzicato that has become synonymous with the great American western. This is "high adventure" -- by the book Hollywood sound sculpting -- that like comfort food, provides the kind of instant gratification that the average filmgoer has come to expect. Though it may break little ground, Newton-Howard injects it with enough heart and wonder to keep it serviceable, believable, and satisfying -- if only for a few hours. ~ James Christopher Monger

$13.29 Superstars in their native Japan, young Tsugaru-shamisen virtuosos Ryoichiro and Kenichi Yoshidaâ€"The Yoshida Brothersâ€"have effected nothing short of a cultural revolution with a muscular reinvention of the ancient three-stringed instrument, giving it the fiery passion of a rock ‘n roll guitar. Online world music portal World Music Central notes, â€Ĺ"Clad in formal, ceremonial attire of kimonos and hakama pants, but sporting the dyed light brown hair that is trendy among Japan’s savvy youth, the Brothers play the age-old Tsugaru-shamisenâ€"an instrument akin to a rustic three-stringed banjoâ€"with the fervor of Jimi Hendrix.”Beyond the rock star status these Pacific Rim mavericks have achieved at home with their signature East-meets-West interpretation of a time-honored musical form, they are fast winning major international acclaim as well. By coaxing startlingly vivid sounds out of their timeless instruments, they have reinvigorated Tsugaru-shamisen for a new generation, incorporating elements of jazz, American folk, pop, Latin music, blues and more into their unique musical tapestry. Following the release of their self-titled U.S. debut album in 2003, Interview Magazine wrote, â€Ĺ"The duo’s approach…has less to do with upholding traditions than exploring new ones. ” And, in a 2005 New York Times review of the Brothers’ performance at GlobalFest, Jon Pareles said, â€Ĺ"…their set, like a shredding heavy-metal soloâ€"was all about speed and twang. They played fast unisons that would have ruthlessly revealed any mistakes; they played solos that stayed close to the tunes and built pitiless crescendos. It was music of pure sinew. ”On the all-new III, their third U.S. album release on Domo Records, the charismatic duo’s fusion of the ancestral and the avant garde innovates further with thirteen tracks ranging from the stunningly shredding to the masterfully serene. The disc was produced by veteran American producer Tony Berg (Edie Brickell, Michael Penn, Charlie ...
