Recorded at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, New York, New York from October 13-15, 1997. Includes interview with Jon Faddis and Carlos Franzetti conducted by Allison Brewster Franzetti. REMEMBRANCES was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance. Personnel: Jon Faddis (trumpet, flugelhorn); Paquito d'Rivera (soprano, clarinet, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); George Young , Dale Kleps, Lawrence Feldman (flute, alto saxophone); Bill Easley (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Roger Rosenberg (bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone); Kenneth Hitchcock (bass clarinet, baritone saxophone); Blair Tindall (oboe, English horn); John Clark , Stewart Rose (French horn); Jim Pugh (alto trombone, tenor trombone, euphonium); David Hazeltine (piano); Clarence Penn (drums). Liner Note Author: Allison Brewster Franzetti. Recording information: St. Peter's Episcopal Church, NY (10/13/1997-10/15/1997). Editor: Nick Prout. Photographers: Alan Nahigian; John Abbott . Arranger: Carlos Franzetti. This is an unusual date for Jon Faddis. Doubling on flugelhorn, Faddis avoids his upper register and performs ballads while backed by an ensemble arranged by Carlos Franzetti. The backup group consists of five reeds, trombone, a french horn, an occasional oboe or English horn player and a rhythm section. Faddis plays lyrically throughout but there are no exciting or stirring moments to be heard on the ten selections which include "Sophisticated Lady," "Speak Like a Child" "In Your Own Sweet Way" and a medium-tempo "Goodbye." A well-played and professionally arranged program but the overall results are rather forgettable. ~ Scott Yanow This is a special DVD edition of the Grammy-nominated album Remembrances by jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis, which has been remastered to take advantage of the increased sonic possibilities of the DVD format. ~ Mark Deming Jon Faddis Remembrances Songs Remembrances Review

| | Wessell Anderson Live At The Village Vanguard CD (1998)
Remembrances
$14.79 Personnel: Wessell Anderson (sopranino & alto saxophones); Irvin Mayfield (trumpet); Xavier Davis (piano); Steve Kirby (bass); Jaz Sawyer (drums). Recorded live at The Village Vanguard, New York, New York on May 30, 1998. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch. Alto saxophonist Anderson is emerging as one of the premier modern- day exponents of the Charlie Parker bebop style of jazz. Since coming out as a leader and stepping forth from his experience with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center conclave, he continues to refine his bop chops, establishing himself as an extremely lyrical sound sculptor and a helluva swinger. The evidence of his rise to power is all in this great set of music recorded live, with the equally talented pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Steve Kirby, drummer Jaz Sawyer, and on four cuts, the welcome addition of trumpeter Irvin Mayfield. The nine-track program is complete in diversity and traditional values. Three are written by the leader: "African Cowboy" a train whistle/wah-wah melody that charges into a bop figure; "Snake ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Remembrances
$12.89 Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- had it right on November 29, 1957, at Carnegie Hall. The John Coltrane on this date is far more assured than he had been four months earlier on the Five Spot date and on the initial Prestige side Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. He'd been with Monk for four months and had absorbed his ...

| | Mccoy Tyner With Stanley Clarke & Al Foster CD (2000) SACD Hybrid

$15.19 Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Stanley Clarke (acoustic & electric basses); Al Foster (drums). Recorded at Clinton Recording Studio "B", New York, New York on April 27 & 28, 1999. Includes liner notes by Donald Elfman. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Stanley Clarke (acoustic & electric basses); Al Foster (drums). Recorded at Clinton Recording Studio "B", New York, New York on April 27 & 28, 1999. Includes liner notes by Donald Elfman. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. No longer trying to push the envelope of innovation, Tyner settles down with a pair of experts and carves out a very nice, fairly orthodox piano trio album. This is Tyner reaffirming most of his strengths: the massive tone quality, the two-handed control over the entire keyboard, and the generally uplifting attitude conveyed through the shape of his melodic invention. He does so in a program of six originals, three standards, and one tune by Stanley Clarke, mixing modal tunes, blues, funk, ballads, and a mildly Caribbean ringer. Only once does he evoke memories of the classic John Coltrane Quartet -- not in "Trane-Like" but in "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes." Clarke takes a break from the film studios and turns in one of his rare sessions on acoustic double bass, producing solid, faultless, relatively conventional support. He doesn't leave the electric ...
