This was one of the most stunning debut albums of the 1980s. Given the domination of synthesizer pop on the radio, Melissa Etheridge was a breath of fresh air when she burst out of the gate with this roots rock album sung with a sensitive bravado often compared to Janis Joplin. Although the passionate vocal deliveries are similar, the comparisons end there: Etheridge is a Midwesterner who was clearly influenced by classic rock artists such as Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Mellencamp. The main theme explored is the emotional complexity of relationships, and throughout the album she sings about the hunger for affection, the pain of unrequited love, and the fire of obsessive romance. While the limited scope of the songwriting requires the listener to enter her world and exorcise the demons of relationships past, the album is full of infectious, up-tempo songs that propel the album forward. Etheridge's true talent, however, is reconciling uncontrollable emotions such as jealousy with a strong and fiercely independent spirit ("Similar Features," "Like the Way I Do"). Perhaps that's why Etheridge became a role model for a generation of young women who found her to be an uncompromising artist unafraid to expose (and celebrate) her strengths and weaknesses. This is a fine introduction to Melissa Etheridge, and it is one of her most enjoyable albums. ~ Vik Iyengar
Although Melissa Etheridge was immediately compared to Tracy Chapman when the two singer-songwriters released their self-titled debut albums in the same year, they in fact shared little other than gender. Kansas native Etheridge is a heartland rocker in the mold of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, or Tom Petty, blessed with a powerfully soulful voice that compares favorably to both Janis Joplin and, in her quieter moments, Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies. On this album, Etheridge's songwriting talents are perhaps not quite as consistent as they would soon become, but producer Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Warren Zevon, etc.) gives the album a clean, muscular, and guitar-oriented sound that seems much less dated than many other albums from the period, and with the startlingly passionate "Bring Me Some Water" alone, Etheridge made her first claim as one of the pre-eminent singer/songwriters of her time.Uncut (11/03, p.136) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Her ragged, garnet-hued rasp maintains an almost-painful level of intensity throughout..."

4 stars IT'S ALL IN THE NAME OF THE ALBUM
The name of the album says it all (Melissa Etheridge). From when I first heard Bring Me Some Water I was hooked. The song is so raw and emotional. Melissa made this album in 4 days, let me say that again 4 days. This is one truly talented and gifted artist to come out of the late 80's. If this is a sign of what is to come watch out in the 90's cause Melissa Etheridge will be a name to recond with.

Live Recording Personnel: Paul Butterfield (vocals, harmonica); Sam Lay (vocals, drums); Elvin Bishop (guitar); Mike Bloomfield (slide guitar); Jerome Arnold (bass); Mark Naftalin (organ).
Includes liner notes by Pete Welding.
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band: Michael Bloomfield.
Even after his death, Paul Butterfield's music didn't receive the accolades that were so deserved. Outputting styles adopted from Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters among other blues greats, Butterfield became one of the first white singers to rekindle blues music through the course of the mid-'60s. His debut album, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, saw him teaming up with guitarists Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield, with Jerome Arnold on bass, Sam Lay on drums, and Mark Naftalin playing organ. The result was a wonderfully messy and boisterous display of American-styled blues, with intensity and pure passion derived from every bent note. In front of all these instruments is Butterfield's harmonica, beautifully dictating a mood and a genuine feel that is no longer existent, even in today's blues music. Each song captures the essence of Chicago blues in a different way, from the back-alley feel of "Born in Chicago" to the melting ease of Willie Dixon's "Mellow Down Easy" to the authentic devotion that emanates from Bishop and Butterfield's "Our Love Is Drifting." "Shake Your Money Maker," "Blues With a Feeling," and "I Got My Mojo Working" (with Lay on vocals) are all equally moving pieces performed with a raw adoration for blues music. Best of all, the music that pours from this album is unfiltered...blared, clamored, and let loose, like blues music is supposed to be released. A year later, 1966's East West carried on with the same type of brash blues sound partnered with a jazzier feel, giving greater to attention to Bishop's and Bloomfield's instrumental talents. ~ Mike DeGagne
The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the

Your Little Secret was positioned as the album that would establish Melissa Etheridge as a genuine superstar, following through on the success of Yes I Am. While Your Little Secret may deliver the sound that made Etheridge popular, only without any of the style and finesse. Throughout the record, she relies on bombast instead of passion to get her point across, which becomes draining by the overlong, over-dramatic conclusion, "This War Is Over." Etheridge also comes up with a few memorable hooks and melodies, relying on her powerful, bluesy wail to carry the songs. However, since there is no melodic foundation to the music, it all collapses in on its own weight, leaving Your Little Secret as the weakest album she has released. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Melissa Etheridge wasn't out of the closet when she released Yes I Am in 1993, yet it's hard not to notice the defiant acclamation in the album's title. This barely concealed sense of sexual identity seeps out from the lyrics, and it informs the music as well, which is perhaps the most confident she has ever been. It's also the most professional she's ever been (perhaps not a coincidence), as she belts out these unapologetically anthemic ...

The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion).
Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002.
You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that doesn't mean that the group returns to their slightly more traditional Celtic roots on the remainder of the songs. Sure, there are hints of that, but there are also four pop covers, two of them ("Little Wing" and "Ruby Tuesday") featuring Ron Wood, with another song, the Lee Hazelwood/Nancy Sinatra duet ...

Released to herald a reunion of the band and superseding several out-of-print predecessors, The Best of Roxy Music is an excellent summary of the group's hits and album highlights between 1972 and 1982. There are really two editions of Roxy Music, the glam rock unit that achieved widespread U.K. success from 1972 to 1975, and the more polished one that was a broader international success from 1979 to 1982. The compilers have dealt with the dichotomy and the more lasting popularity of the later recordings by presenting the compilation in reverse chronological order, so that soft rock hits like "Over You" and "Dance Away," which scored in America, come before U.K.-only hits like "Street Life" and "Virginia Plain," which rock much harder. But all the major hits are here (only a couple of less-successful British singles chart entries are missing), augmented by memorable album tracks like "Do the Strand" and "Mother of Pearl." In print or not, this is the best single-disc collection of Roxy Music, since it is more complete than earlier compilations like the 1977 Greatest Hits and 1983 The Atlantic Years (1973-1980) LPs, and, unlike later best-ofs such as Street Life: 20 Great Hits (1986), The Ultimate Collection (1988), and More Than This: The Best of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music (1995) ...

Whose Muddy Shoes
Elmore James Whose Muddy Shoes CD  (1969) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Japan

Melissa Etheridge
CD $27.85
This collection of 17 songs by legendary blues guitarist, Elmore James, features a collaboration with John Brim.
Japanese version includes two extra songs.
CD contains 2 bonus tracks.
Elmore James had recorded a session for Chess in 1953 before settling down with the Bihari Brothers and again in 1960, shortly before starting his final recordings for Bobby Robinson's Fire, Fury and Enjoy labels. This collects up all of them on CD with the bonus addition of an alternate take of "The Sun Is Shining," which can be interpreted as a precursor to his later hit "The Sky Is Crying." The earlier sides from 1953 lack his inimitable slide, but the 1960 session produced classics like "Talk to Me Baby," "Madison Blues" and a powerful reading of T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday." These tracks of James working with the Chess production team are delightfully fleshed out with a half-dozen gems by the highly underrated John Brim, some of which include stellar harp work by Little Walter ("Rattlesnake," "Be Careful" -- on which Walter stops playing in several spots to become an ad-lib backup vocalist -- and "You Got Me") as well as the original version of "Ice Cream Man," better known to rock fans from Van Halen's cover version of it from their debut album. ~ Cub Koda

Melissa Etheridge
CD $10.69  Audio Samples
Personnel: Diane Hildebrand (vocals, guitar); Tony McCashen (various instruments); Colin Cameron (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass instrument); Russell White (piano, harpsichord).
Diane Hildebrand was hardly the only worthy singer/songwriter whose career was kick-started by writing songs for the Monkees (she penned "Early Morning Blues and Greens," "Goin' Down," and "Your Auntie Grizelda"), but while Neil Diamond, Harry Nilsson, John Stewart, Tommy Boyce, and Bobby Hart all went on to enjoy interesting recording careers, Hildebrand's tenure as a performer seemingly began and ended with this album, originally released in 1969. Early Morning Blues and Greens is certainly an ambitious and well-crafted record; Hildebrand's voice is lovely and while she murmurs more than she shouts, she gives her material a strongly emotional reading at all times, and producers David Anderle and Russ Miller created some striking backdrops for her, suggesting a warmer and more personable variation ...

Change
Andrew Hill Change CD  (2007)

Melissa Etheridge
CD $10.25  Audio Samples
Personnel: Andrew Hill (piano); Sam Rivers (tenor saxophone); Walter Booker (bass instrument); J.C. Moses (drums).
Of the many jazz pianists who came of age in the 1960s, the brilliant Andrew Hill was not only one of the best, but among the most underrated. Perhaps this is due to Hill's subtle, minimalist, Thelonious Monk-derived style, which was alternately too conservative to attract attention from the out movement, yet too unusual for the average straight-ahead jazz fan. CHANGE is a session from 1966, previously available only as part of a long-out-of-print Sam Rivers Blue Note set issued in the '70s. Hill's quartet consists of Sam Rivers, an urgent, volatile tenor saxophonist; Walter Booker on bass; and J.C. Moses on drums. The titles of Hill's compositions perfectly evoke the mood of this vital, commanding session, with Hill and Rivers in top form.
The 1966 edition of the Andrew Hill Quartet included saxophonist Sam Rivers, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer J.C. Moses. This group recorded what was to be the first of Andrew Hill's four "free" sessions for Blue Note. The other three were all recorded in 1967 and were solo piano sessions. Two of those dates along with an Artist House LP were released on the Mosaic Select Andrew Hill box. Hill's classic, brilliant, and still-outside date Dance with Death from 1968, featuring Joe Farrell, Charles Tolliver, Victor Sproles, and Billy Higgins, was not issued until 1980 and made its first compact disc appearance in 2004. Change has an interesting story in that it wasn't released at the time of recording and remained in the can until 1975, when it was issued under Sam Rivers' name as part of a Blue Note double as part of a two-LP set called Involution. The other disc was a Rivers-led date (from 1967) with a different band that hit CD shelves in 1998 under the title Dimensions and Extensions. Change as it was recorded and edited -- and even given a catalog number (84233) -- is supplemented here with two bonus tracks from the date. All this music was previously released on CD in limited edition (and now sold out) as The Complete Blue Note Andrew Hill Sessions (1963-66). This band plays outside, but this is not "free jazz" in the original sense of the term. In fact, it is music that is composed, with lots of room for improvisation, and one need go no further than the 11-minute opening cut, "Violence," where Hill's chords lie behind a bristling opening solo by Rivers. Hill takes the solo from Rivers, quoting from stride piano blues and Thelonious Monk, and then enters into a spiky duet with the saxophonist before a bass solo and Hill entering on harpsichord. Rivers brings the head back in and moves it to the margins again. This fiery interplay is a long example of what lies in wait for those who've never encountered this music before. It is Hill at his most intense and focused, with an eager group of players who were all excellent listeners. In contrast, "Pain," the album's second track, feels like anything but, with a swinging, Monk-like theme before Sproles takes over with a bass solo that keeps the theme in clear view. Rivers isn't present here at all; it's a trio number that strides and lopes with a killer piano solo by Hill. The saxophonist doesn't re-enter the picture until the middle of the next cut, "Illusion," with a Latin-tinged rhythmic motif and wonderful playing by Moses. When Rivers does enter, his melodic strut -- courtesy of the composer -- feels like a beautiful nod to Ornette. And ...
