This Deluxe Edition includes original album on disc one plus live performances and solo acoustic performances on disc two.

Although Melissa Etheridge was immediately compared to Tracy Chapman when the two singer-songwriters released their self-titled debut albums in the same year, they in fact shared little other than gender. Kansas native Etheridge is a heartland rocker in the mold of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, or Tom Petty, blessed with a powerfully soulful voice that compares favorably to both Janis Joplin and, in her quieter moments, Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies. On this album, Etheridge's songwriting talents are perhaps not quite as consistent as they would soon become, but producer Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Warren Zevon, etc.) gives the album a clean, muscular, and guitar-oriented sound that seems much less dated than many other albums from the period, and with the startlingly passionate "Bring Me Some Water" alone, Etheridge made her first claim as one of the pre-eminent singer/songwriters of her time.

4 stars IT'S ALL IN THE NAME OF THE ALBUM
The name of the album says it all (Melissa Etheridge). From when I first heard Bring Me Some Water I was hooked. The song is so raw and emotional. Melissa made this album in 4 days, let me say that again 4 days. This is one truly talented and gifted artist to come out of the late 80's. If this is a sign of what is to come watch out in the 90's cause Melissa Etheridge will be a name to recond with.

5 stars Second best only to "Brave and Crazy"
It really is a toss-up between this self titled album and her first album "Brave and Crazy". You can be sure of one thing though,if you don't have both in your CD collection your just Crazy

The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room. Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. The only fly in the ointment is the fairly primitive production, which ...

Melissa Etheridge Never Enough CD  (1992)

Melissa Etheridge CD music
CD $8.45  4.5 stars Audio Samples
In 1988, Melissa Etheridge's career ignited behind the full-throttle single "Bring Me Some Water" and her eponymous debut's earthy rock sound was hailed by critics and fans alike. The 1989 follow-up, Brave and Crazy, mixed a little grace into the grit, but was still in line with the trad rock of guys like John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen. While these albums had their share of introspection, 1992's Never Enough marked an even greater maturation in Etheridge's sound. Lyrically, it seemed to be the singer's most personal album yet, while a good portion of its set list consisted of heartfelt ballads. Sure, "Must Be Crazy for Me" and "Meet Me in the Back" are laced with barroom come-ons and roll with the kind of rock traditionalism that originally established her. But the largely acoustic "Boy Feels Strange" brought us inside a failing relationship, while perhaps inadvertently addressing the rumbles and rumors concerning Etheridge's own sexuality. Likewise, "Letting Go" brought her raw vocal style to a wounded, almost fragile, place not apparent before, and was guided by the plaintive notes of a solitary piano. The songs were challenging not only from a musicianship and songwriting standpoint, but also as the next steps in Etheridge's still-young career. It was a risk to issue a record like Never Enough after a three-year hiatus and into a market that might have expected "Bring Me Some MORE Water." Etheridge's choice of a single was even more gutsy. "2001" sounded nothing like anything she had done before. ...

Melissa Etheridge was the obvious choice to induct Janis Joplin into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995. After all, precious few mainstream rock artists of the 1990's revel in the kind of outward emotional turmoil that was Joplin's calling card, but Etheridge is one of those remaining true believers. Her songs have always pinned down unfaithful lovers, declared smoldering but forbidden desires, and stated her heart's trials and tribulations on the wings of rootsy big-rock reminiscent of Springsteen, Adams and Seger, all without the slightest trace of irony. YOUR LITTLE SECRET continues her straightforward ways, at times padding these tales with an electrified six-string crunch. Without a moment to catch a breath, the opening title-track drops the listener directly into the storm of Etheridge's private life. Fronting a hard-rocking, stripped-down four-piece band, the singer has seldom sounded as convincing as when she insists that her lover "stop playing those eyes" and explodes with wordless vocal growls. Partially abandoning the acoustic guitar-based sound of her previous releases also energizes the driving "I Really Like You," on which she tries to tempt her lover with mangos ("your favorite fruit"), and adds a mean streak to the mid-tempo "Nowhere To Go," a Boss-like journey into a lonely Midwestern heart. Most of the time, though, YOUR LITTLE SECRET is Etheridge doing what she does best--implanting acoustic-minded, folk-rock songs with ...

Not a trace of the dreaded sophomore curse was to be found on Melissa Etheridge's second album. On Brave and Crazy, the throaty singer/guitarist/composer is slightly more reflective than on her first release, but no less confident. Nor is she is any less rootsy. Etheridge's earthiness is a large part of her appeal, and she uses it most advantageously on the gutsy rockers "Skin Deep" and "Let Me Go," as well as more reflective pieces such as "Testify," "You Used to Love to Dance" and "You Can Sleep While I Drive" (which, like a lot of Bruce Springsteen's songs, equates long drives with freedom and liberation). As introspective as things get on this CD, Etheridge never becomes wimpy or self-pitying. For all its vulnerability, Brave and Crazy is the work of someone who comes across as a survivor. ~ Alex Henderson Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California and Devonshire Studios, North Hollywood, California between January 24 & May 26, 1989. "Come To My Window" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. "Come To My Window" and "I'm The Only One" were both nominated for Best Rock Song. On her fourth album, Melissa Etheridge continues to write songs with a strong rock base and no sign of giving in to any kinds of trends. With the one-two punch of "I'm The Only One" and "Come To My Window," Etheridge manages to break through to bigger success on her own terms. YES I AM continues with tales of love within the lives of ordinary people while still managing to touch on a few different themes. "All American Girl" mentions AIDS, while "Talking To My Angel" is about growing up alienated in a small town. An added bonus is the inclusion of "I Will Never Be The Same," a previously unreleased track which was one of a few Etheridge songs featured in the movie WELCOME HOME ROXIE CARMICHAEL. Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. Personnel: Melissa Etheridge (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); ...

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine." Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' ...

What other pop band from the 1970s and early '80s conjures up the image of a debonair man in a dinner jacket ordering a dry martini and, with a devilish smirk on his face, sidling up to a voluptuous stranger in a red velvet dress? With the seductive croon of resident cad Bryan Ferry and the band's amalgam of smooth balladry, soulful R&B, and quirky pop-rock, the sound of Roxy Music is unmistakably lush, sophisticated, and difficult to resist. Devotees of the group will want most of the individual albums, including COUNTRY LIFE and AVALON. But for the casual fan or uninitiated listener, there is no better package than this 18-track compilation. THE BEST OF ROXY MUSIC has the band's best-known singles, including "More Than This," "Love Is the Drug," "Virginia Plain," and an excellent interpretation of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Sequenced in reverse chronological order, the music morphs from Ferry-directed ...

Whose Muddy Shoes
Elmore James Whose Muddy Shoes CD  (1969) Bonus Tracks; Japan

Melissa Etheridge album
CD $26.39
This collection of 17 songs by legendary blues guitarist, Elmore James, features a collaboration with John Brim. Elmore James had recorded a session for Chess in 1953 before settling down with the Bihari Brothers and again in 1960, shortly before starting his final recordings for Bobby Robinson's Fire, Fury and Enjoy labels. This collects up all of them on CD with the bonus addition of an alternate take of "The Sun Is Shining," which can be interpreted as a precursor to his later hit "The Sky Is Crying." The earlier sides from 1953 lack his inimitable slide, but the 1960 session produced classics like "Talk to Me Baby," "Madison Blues" and a powerful reading of T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday." These tracks of James working with the Chess production team are delightfully fleshed out with a half-dozen gems by the highly underrated John Brim, some of which include stellar harp work by Little Walter ("Rattlesnake," "Be Careful" -- on which Walter stops playing in several spots to become an ad-lib backup vocalist -- and "You Got Me") as well as the original version of "Ice Cream Man," better known to rock fans from Van Halen's cover version of it from their debut album. ~ Cub Koda Elmore James had recorded a session for Chess in 1953 before settling down with the Bihari Brothers and again in 1960, shortly before starting his final recordings for Bobby Robinson's Fire, Fury and Enjoy labels. Diane Hildebrand Early Morning Blues And Greens CD  (1969)

Melissa Etheridge music CDs
CD $10.79  Top 500 Audio Samples
Diane Hildebrand was hardly the only worthy singer/songwriter whose career was kick-started by writing songs for the Monkees (she penned "Early Morning Blues and Greens," "Goin' Down," and "Your Auntie Grizelda"), but while Neil Diamond, Harry Nilsson, John Stewart, Tommy Boyce, and Bobby Hart all went on to enjoy interesting recording careers, Hildebrand's tenure as a performer seemingly began and ended with this album, originally released in 1969. Early Morning Blues and Greens is certainly an ambitious and well-crafted record; Hildebrand's voice is lovely and while she murmurs more than she shouts, she gives her material a strongly emotional reading at all times, and producers David Anderle and Russ Miller created some striking backdrops for her, suggesting a warmer and more personable variation on the Euro-centric sounds of Judy Collins' late-'60s work, dominated by the spare dynamics of acoustic keyboards and guitars. Melodically, Hildebrand's songs suggest Leonard Cohen's early works and there's a similar air of glorious sorrow to her songs that's palpable and intriguing. However, while Hildebrand's music is certainly pretty, it also seems a bit pretentious, and for all the beauty of ...

Of the many jazz pianists who came of age in the 1960s, the brilliant Andrew Hill was not only one of the best, but among the most underrated. Perhaps this is due to Hill's subtle, minimalist, Thelonious Monk-derived style, which was alternately too conservative to attract attention from the out movement, yet too unusual for the average straight-ahead jazz fan. CHANGE is a session from 1966, previously available only as part of a long-out-of-print Sam Rivers ...
