Jughead: Ty Tabor (vocals, guitar); Derek Sherinian (guitar, keyboards); Matt Bissonette (bass); Greg Bissonette (drums). Recorded at Jakes Place, Studio City, California, Leopard Room, Hollywood Hills, California and at Alien Beans Studio, Houston, Texas. Audio Mixer: Ty Tabor. Recording information: Alien Beans Studios; Jakes Place, Studio City, CA; Leopard Room, Hollywood Hills, CA. Photographer: John Harrell. Who could have guessed King's X's guitarist, Ty Tabor, had what it takes to write the perfect pop record? Well, OK, maybe Jughead's eponymous disc is not that perfect -- and maybe it's not that pop -- but it's one very nice surprise. For this project, Tabor enlisted the rhythm section of Matt and Gregg Bissonette, along with Planet X (and once Dream Theater) keyboardist Derek Sherinian. Despite the lineup, prog metal fans are in for a shock: Besides guitar riffs crunchier than on your average pop album, this music has little to do with King's X. Instead, think of the lighter side of Spock's Beard (or Neal Morse's first solo effort). Think of rock music with your feet in the sand, of summer holidays, of the Beatles and the Beach Boys casting their influence on a singer/guitarist who had a handful of light, witty, unpretentious songs to record. That's what Jughead's about. From the first lines of "Halfway Home to Elvis," it becomes obvious that the album will draw its strength from instantly hummable melodies and a calculated lack of seriousness. Each track is well chiseled. Prog rock without the pompous synths (Sherinian remains very discreet, hammering chords on an electric piano instead of producing huge synth swirls), alternative rock without the teenage pose, this album is surprisingly refreshing in its take on the hard rock radio hit. "Snow in Tahiti," "Bullet Train," "Be Like You," and "Flowers" are all highlights (the latter could make bubblegum pop fun!). But what makes Jughead a thrilling listen is the way the songs kick off after only a fraction of a second. Two thumbs up. ~ François Couture Jughead Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) VERY VERY VERY GOOD Great songs and great musicians (Bissonette M. & G., Tabor and Sherinian...). Pop-power rock played by monsters! Submitted by karalis (rome, italy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
great expectations ty tabor and friends are one off from a sensational album. this album kicks off with a contempary punk feel but runs out of power three quaterts of the way through. there's no denying the quality of the music throughout the album but unfortunately it seems to fall into the familiarity of the tabor, platypus style. Wow! What a great purchase! I never thought I would be happy about Platypus Breaking up!! This CD starts out great and never stops! Ty's signature guitar work shows up strong in every cut! You'll love it!! Submitted by a reviewer (Orlando) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
the Beatles meet Blink-182 (without the whiney vocals) The more I listen, the more I like. Good, solid tunes with lots of melody and there's some great energy on some of these tracks. I'd say this is as good as many of the albums from King's X. I definitely like it more than the first Platypus cd. I really like Ty's voice and there's really good harmony vocals (sometimes I hear a little Beatles influence). My favorite tracks are SNOW IN TAHITI and FLOWERS (it's really a shame some of this stuff doesn't get played on the radio..at least it doesn't get played around here, anyway). *Favorite lyric: Don't be cruel/see my sneer/ from my pelvis to my ears (Halfway Home to Elvis). One thing I would note, is that I can't really hear any keyboards on this, which is fine (I'm just not sure what Derek contributed to this particular project). Also, this is anything but Prog, just so you know. In fact, there are hardly any guitar solos. It's straight-forward power pop with good hooks that focuses on the songs. I've listened to it several times the last couple of days and I haven't got tired of it at all. I have a feeling this one won't collect dust anytime soon. Friggin' Great All i must say is God Bless Ty Tabor, Derek Sherinian, and the Bisonnette Brothers. This was a great piece of work. 8 out of the 11 tracks on this album are easily 5 star work, while the other 3 tracks make 4 stars. This is just a Friggin' Great album. Another great addition to anyones collection.
However, one surprise on this album is that it isn't as... technical i guess, as one would expect considering the talent and experience of the artists that are members. It's very radio friendly and catchy. Submitted by a reviewer (Lynnwood, Wa, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
