Singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco didn't become one of the biggest DIY success stories by sticking to the studio. Over the years, she built her cottage industry up through tireless touring, gaining a huge and rabidly loyal audience one painstaking gig at a time. So although her Righteous Babe label has released many fine studio efforts from the prolific recording artist, it's on a live album like this two-disc affair that DiFranco can truly shine. All the little touches that make Ani's performances so special can be heard over the course of SO MUCH SHOUTING, SO MUCH LAUGHTER; the trademark stuttering, start-stop acoustic guitar rhythms of "Swan Dive," the way the horns and the organ interact on "Whatall is Nice," the folky strumming that underpins the sociopolitical message of "To the Teeth,"the bluesy, slow-burn vocalizing in which DiFranco indulges on "Revelling." All the aspects of her music come into play in a concert setting, so when the pointed aggression present in one of DiFranco's signature songs, "Not a Pretty Girl" is effectively underscored by the band, you're able to feel the effect at home in much the way the audience did. And isn't that what a live album is supposed to be all about?
Partially recorded at Nantes, France and Boise Idaho. Includes liner notes by Ronald Ehmke.
Personnel: Ani DiFranco (vocals, guitar); Hans Teuber (flute, clarinet, saxophone, background vocals); Ravi Best, Todd Horton, Shane Endsley (trumpet); Julie Wolf (keyboards, background vocals); Jason Mercer (bass); Daren Hahn (drums).
Dirty Linen (8/03, p.55) - "...The mix and production are superb. DiFranco's guitar remains the core of the sound, but the other instruments blend in and out perfectly..." Ani Difranco So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter Songs So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) So Much Ani! Ths is a great double album. If you like Ani live (the way I think she sounds best), you'll probably love this.
I admit it took me a couple of hearings to get used to the bigger sound, the brass, the other singer, but now that I've listened a few times, I love this new addition to my collection.
Several new versions of well known songs from her catalogue, all of which sit well alongside the originals.
And 'Grey' is just sublime. For me, it's worth buying the album for this track alone. Submitted by a reviewer (Devon, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Gotta Love Ani I have listened to nothing but this album since I got it. Ani is my favorite artist, and although I enjoy her musical evolution, I am still partial to her sound from the early 90's. Not to take anything away from this album, though. She is best live, and her double live albums really give insight into the preformer that she is. Amazing Girl Take all that you love about Ani DiFranco's songs and then listen to her breath different life into them. In Ani's most recent album, she expands upon the genius of her poetry through variation of music and presentation. It's brilliant. Submitted by a reviewer (Phoenix, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Ani is just incredible I love an first of all, she is by frmy favorite musician, and it's her and her music that plays through my head and gets me through the day. I love this album b/c first, it has character. I've gone to her past 2 concerts and the cd took me back to those 2 nights I've been wishing to relive. What I like most about the cd though is the fact that each song is evolving, and i can listen to songs like Letter to a John,Loom, Jukebox, and it's like hearing them for the first time on this album. I love everythng about the album. Submitted by a reviewer (Hinsdle, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$11.49 There could be no truer title for indie icon Ani DiFranco's 12th studio record than EVOLVE, as her career has always been the epitome of artistic evolution. Early on, she could have been criticized for something of a stasis in her furious folk (at least to the casual ear), but starting with DILATE's sultry, almost acid-jazzy diversion, the prolific Buffalo girl constantly experimented with new angles to present her vision of modern life from the political to more tender pursuits.
EVOLVE builds upon a turn she hinted at on her 2002 live ...
