Recorded in Java. Originally released as JAVANESE COURT GAMELAN on Nonesuch (72044). Includes liner notes by Robert E. Brown and Andrew Toth.
Javanese court gamelan is some of the most refined, beautiful, and strange music you're likely to find. Slow and stately, this music -- the examples here are from Jogyakarta -- offers both constant movement and the floating sense of standing still. Starting with a "Ketawang," the real meat is in the two long gendings, "Tedjånåtå" and "Mandulpati"; the former is a medley of three compositions to accompany a classical court dance, although it's played here more as a concert piece, given a slower, dreamy tempo. There's a continuous flow of sound, but the movements are subtle and discreet, presenting themselves slowly, like a flower opening. "Mandulpati" is in an older Solonese style. Refined and highly sensuous, it incorporates sung classical poetry. The final piece, "Hudan Mas," recorded in 1971, was played for a radio broadcast, with the gamelan (the word refers to the orchestra, not an instrument) playing softly, in a lulling manner, forming a perfect end to the record. ~ Chris Nickson
The greatest collection of instruments - mainly metallophones and bronze gongs of different shapes and sizes and the epitome of the playing style are to be found in four princely courts, two each in the neighboring cities of Jogyakarta and Surakarta. This recording is one of the major classical traditions of Eastern art music. Recorded in Bali by Robert E Brown. Originally released in 1971. Slipcase. Nonesuch. 2003.

An album of high quality gamelan from the villagers of Gunung Sari as an installment in the über-extensive King World Music Library series. The performers here stick mostly to the highest speed available for their performances, staying within the gong kebyar format as a basic grounding, but powering through each composition as though it were their last. Gunung Sari is regarded as arguably the best troupe of gamelan musicians within the kebyar style (though there are concerns of commercialism with their involvement in the tourism industry), and here the group shows off enough prowess to cement that claim. The album opens with a purely instrumental number (a mild rarity), "Sekar Djepun." The title track ("Golden Rain") ...

$7.69 Marc Cohn's second outing manages to easily overcome the sophomore curse -- the material here is strong, relaxed, very assured, managing to be dramatic without being blatant. The overall album is warm and hypnotic, covering a variety of moods. It's a terrific and subtle piece of work. ~ Steven McDonald

$16.65 RELIX IV, the 14th album from thrash kingpins Overkill, released in 2005, finds the outfit still attracting fans from the worlds of hardcore and metal three decades into its existence.
The phrase 'You either love 'em or you hate 'em' could be used to describe several rock bands, but it seems custom-made for thrash veterans Overkill. Few bands throughout the history of heavy metal have thrashed as intensely or possessed a singer like Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth (whose vocals give 'piercing' a whole new meaning). But the band (or more succinctly, mainstays Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni) admirably stuck to their guns through it all. Whereas many metal veterans could be spotted donning flannel shirts in the early '90s or trying out their rap skills around the turn of the century, Overkill has turned a blind eye to trends. And while they never infiltrated the mainstream like Anthrax or Megadeth, their perseverance has paid off, as they retain a strong following to this day, and continue to crank out albums, such as 2005's Relixiv. That said, each new Overkill release is not unlike each ...
