Machine Head: Robert Flynn (vocals, guitar); Adam Duce (bass); Dave McClan (drums). Additional personnel: Ahrue Luster, Phil Demmel (guitar). Recorded live at Brixton Academy, London, England on December 8, 2001. Includes liner notes by Charles Marsh. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Robert Flynn (vocals, guitar); Phil Demmel, Ahrue Luster (guitar); Dave McClain (drums). Audio Mixer: Colin Richardson. Recording information: Brixton Academy, London, England (12/08/2001/07/07/2002); With Full Force Festival, Leipzig, Germany (12/08/2001/07/07/2002). As live albums go, Hellalive is solid: a nice cross section of songs from Machine Head's four albums, a dense, guitar-centric mix (courtesy of famed metal producer Colin Richardson), and tight, energetic performances. This live set, recorded primarily at London's Brixton Academy in 2001, is adequately muscular, Robb Flynn unleashing his demons on venom-spewers "Take My Scars," "Ten Ton Hammer," and "The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears," with Dave McClain's thunder drums providing an unshakable foundation for the band's post-thrash power-groove riffs. ~ John Serba As live albums go, Hellalive is solid: a nice cross section of songs from Machine Head's four albums, a dense, guitar-centric mix (courtesy of famed metal producer Colin Richardson), and tight, energetic performances. But Hellalive came at a time when Machine Head's vitality was ebbing; preceding studio record Supercharger was frontman/leader Robb Flynn's weakest songwriting effort, the band was faced with indifference from both the metal underground and mainstream rock audiences, and second guitarist Ahrue Luster had exited the band (two of the live tracks here feature six-stringer Phil Demmel, of Flynn's former thrash act Vio-Lence). This live set, recorded primarily at London's Brixton Academy in 2001, is adequately muscular, Flynn unleashing his demons on venom-spewers "Take My Scars," "Ten Ton Hammer," and "The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears," with Dave McClain's thunder drums providing an unshakable foundation for the band's post-thrash power-groove riffs. Still, the strength of Machine Head's early material makes latter-day cuts "The Burning Red," "Crashing Around You," and "American High" sound comparatively flaccid -- and while early Machine Head albums Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change were bona fide events in the metal underground, the band outclassing the likes of Pantera and Biohazard with exceptional riffs and songwriting, Hellalive offers little more than a ho-hum to anyone but the band's most devoted fans. ~ John Serba Machine Head Hellalive Songs Purchase Hellalive CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Machine Head Burning Red CD (1999)

$11.79 An instantly catchy collection of power-pop-punk tunes from THE VANDALS drummer Josh Freese, this record was originally recorded for the label owned by Stone Gossard (PEARL JAM's Guitarist). Stone folded the label recently and Kung Fu Records seized the opportunity. Despite being a person who many consider to be the "best drummer in the world," it is song writing, not drums that are the focus of Freese's solo work. For The Notorious One Many Orgy, Josh has composed 12 amazing ...

$11.79 The Doobie Brothers' third long-player was the charm, their most substantial and consistent album to date, and one that rode the charts for a year. It was also a study in contrasts, Tom Johnston's harder-edged, bolder rocking numbers balanced by Patrick Simmons' more laid-back country-rock ballad style. The leadoff track, Johnston's "Natural Thing," melded the two, opening with interlocking guitars and showcasing the band's exquisite soaring harmonies around a beautiful melody, all wrapped up in a midtempo beat -- the result was somewhere midway between Allman Brothers-style virtuosity and Eagles/Crosby & Nash-type lyricism, which defined this period in the Doobies' history and gave them a well-deserved lock on the top of the charts. Next up was the punchy, catchy "Long Train Runnin'," a piece they'd been playing for years as an instrumental -- a reluctant Johnston was persuaded by producer Ted Templeman to write lyrics to it and record the song, and the resulting track became the group's next hit. The slashing, fast-tempo "China Grove" and "Without You" represented the harder side of the Doobies' sound, and were juxtaposed with Simmons' romantic country-rock ballads "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman," "Clear as the Driven Snow," and "South City Midnight Lady." Simmons also showed off his louder side with "Evil Woman," while Johnston showed his more reflective side with "Ukiah" and "The Captain and Me" -- the latter, a soaring rocker clocking in at nearly five minutes, features radiant guitars and harmonies, soaring ever higher and faster to a triumphant finish. ~ Bruce Eder CAPTAIN AND ME found the Doobie Brothers boasting three strong vocalists, two expert guitarists, and a ...
