Band Is From Modesto,Ca. Hard Rock
Depswa: Jeremy Penick (vocals, guitar); Dan Noonan, James Mills (guitar, background vocals); Ryan Burchfield (bass, bacground vocals); Gordon Heckaman (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Erik Quisling (piano); Gregory Butler (programming); Sierra Swan, Brad Kane (background vocals). Recorded at Bay 7, Valley Village, California and Sparky Dark Studios, Calabasas, California. Depswa is yet another California combo to wade in the grunge and nü metal morass that oozed all over radio and MTV after the breakout success of Linkin Park and P.O.D. It's these groups that Depswa references most on its Geffen debut, along with frequent nods to the Deftones. But despite the LP's tendency to sound like what has been heard before, there's still some solid, if not particularly groundbreaking, songwriting happening on Two Angels and a Dream. Jeremy Penick's vocals don't lean fully on established styles (i.e., the monotone moan, the singsong rap yelp). Rather, he fluctuates between traditional metal vocalism and the quiet-loud dynamic favored by nü metallurgists. Likewise, his mates change up their instrumental approach enough to avoid the sound-alike tag, even if, in the end, Two Angels doesn't stray too far from the established formula of success. (After all, producer Howard Benson helmed P.O.D.'s Satellite.) The title track is built around a surprisingly introspective guitar line and builds to an urgent, exploding chorus with the aid of backing vocals that intertwine with Penick's before harmonizing with him on the title-line payoff. Despite being mixed by go-to pro Chris Lord-Alge to pop with the same effect as previous post-grunge radio hits, the song's furious changes still retain vestiges of California's hardcore tradition. "From the Inside" is almost a carbon copy of the title track and is just as faithful to the P.O.D. gospel. Nevertheless, it's a solid cut that displays some real talent on the part of Penick and his mates Dan Noonan (guitar), Ryan Burchfield (bass), Gordon Heckaman (drums), and James Mills (guitar). "Charades" features some of the most brutal breaks on the record but is marred by brooding, slow bridges that don't add the depth the band no doubt hoped they would. "Silhouette," however, is more accurate, and "Prom Song" and first single "This Time" are standouts that teeter on the positive side of genre similarity. As the nü metal trend continued to unfold, the influence of first-generation sleaze metal like Korn and Limp Bizkit has been nullified somewhat, in favor of the articulated emotion and more adventurous instrumentation of the aforementioned second wave. Here in its third cycle, it's difficult even for the innovators (Staind, etc.) to remain vital. What does this mean for Depswa? Despite Two Angels and a Dream's ultimate similarity to its peers, the album's ability to retain a glimmer of the band's own voice marks it as an effective debut in a genre dominated by gray area. ~ Johnny Loftus

Depswa Two Angels And A Dream Songs Two Angels And A Dream Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Good up and coming band This is a very good CD. The songs don't change much from one to the other but that's alright because the band has a pretty good sound. If I had to compare them to another band, I would compare them to the early Deftones - a very "emo" sound. Submitted by Q_Daddy1 (Royersford, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One hell of a debut cd! This cd is excellent! It is one of the best debut's I've heard! Every song is really good and very catchy. You'll find yourself singing along many times over the course of the cd. One song I really love is Prom Song. If the debut came out earlier this yr and they released this as a single before Prom, this song would be a HUGE hit. I hope they release it soon. The song is absolutely terrific! The whole cd is awesome! Submitted by a reviewer (West Allis, WI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Awesome Record! Depswa has definitely found their true musical identity with "Two Angels And A Dream". Ignoring industry standards, and their harder, angrier metal roots while performing as Carcinogen in their early days, this band's debut release is a must have for all rock, and even hard rock fans. Not giving in to what others may have wanted from the band, Depswa has stayed true to their vision in making music that appeals to their hearts, minds, and souls. Fortunately for them, this record appeals to the fans in the very same way.
With this album you can expect sincere, inspirational, emotionally driven lyrics, strong melodic vocals with appropriately placed hard screams, crisp guitar work with a touch of distortion added in for flavor, and solid rythmns and melodies. The vocals in particular are noteworthy in that Pennick has the ability to reach near operatic pitch, with perfect control and style - coupling this with harsher screams when necessary. With four band members singing, also expect some of the most awe inspiring harmonization that has been blatantly absent throughout current day rock and metal recording artists.
"Two Angels And A Dream" represents all that is good in modern hard rock. Everything finely planned, well written, and produced to perfection. The songs on this cd have themes ranging from love, lies, loss, drug abuse, soul searching, and obsession. They tell stories, many of which fans can relate to on a plethora of levels. As far as who you can compare them to, which is a crime really, think Cold, Incubus, Endo, and some have even compared them to Ultraspank and Queen. They stand alone however when it comes to song writing. Perhaps not better than the bands listed, but different in their own way.
Guest artists on this record include Brad Kane who's singing style meshes perfectly as backup in "This Time" and "Where I've Begun". You may have heard his work if you listened to Disney's music for Aladdin. Backing vocals on "Traveler's Song" are done by Sierra Swan, and the piano on this song done by Erik Quisling.
This is arguable, but the best song on this record is "From The Inside". If you were lucky enough to go to Ozzfest this year it is included on the sampler. Perhaps the hardest song on the disc, FTI contains excellent transitions between clean and harder vocals, catchy guitar riffs, and drumming that inspires you to move. The vocal harmonizations on this song are what earned it the "spine-tingling -send-shivers -down-your-spine" melody award.
"Needles" speaks to drug addiction, "Voyeur" is the perfect stalker's anthem, and "Let It Go" is all about just that - letting go of something you love, as hard as it is. Every song on this record has a message, which will reach your heart, and will never leave your soul. And performed live? Lets just say you are in for more surprises!
