Wet Willie: Jimmy Hall (vocals, harmonica, saxophone, percussion); Ricky Hirsch (guitar, mandolin, background vocals); John Anthony (guitar, piano, organ, synthesizer, percussion, background vocals); Wick Larsen (guitar); Jack Hall (banjo, bass, background vocals); Michael Duke (keyboards); Lewis Ross (drums, percussion). Producers: Eddie Offord, Johnny Sandlin, Tom Dowd, Paul Hornsby. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson. Includes liner notes by Bill DeYoung. This is part of Universal's "20th Century Masters: The Millenium Collection" series. Wet Willie released five of its seven studio albums on Capricorn Records between 1971 and 1976, with the remaining two appearing on Epic in 1978 and 1979. Since Capricorn's catalog is in the hands of Universal and Epic's is owned by Sony, putting together a best-of drawn from the vaults of two competing major labels would be a challenge. That challenge is not addressed on this discount-priced compilation, which considers only the Capricorn years. That means the compiler is able to include the band's only Top Ten hit, "Keep on Smilin'" (and he does, as the opening track), as well as subsequent singles chart entries "Country Side of Life," "Leona," "Dixie Rock," and "Everything That 'Cha Do (Will Come Back to You)." But he is unable to use the Top 40 hits "Street Corner Serenade" and "Weekend" that appeared on Epic. Filling up the album's 45-minute running time are impressive album tracks such as covers of Otis Redding's "Shout Bamalama" and Little Milton's "Grits Ain't Groceries" (aka "All Around the World") that confirm the band's affection for Deep South R&B. Wet Willie was more closely tied to such late-'60s soul music than its peers in the Southern rock movement of the early '70s, and this collection confirms that the band played it with conviction. ~ William Ruhlmann 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Wet Willie Music 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Wet Willie Songs 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Wet Willie Review

20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Wet Willie
$13.15 AS HE SLEEPS • PROJECT BIO:As He Sleeps is a musical venture that has been a long time coming. This “solo acoustic guitar” release has a history of acoustic guitar riffs that have cried for years to stand alone and not be buried in the mix. Frazier Riddell has released several songs over the past 20 years from full band rock to acoustic folk rock; from jazzy saxophone to blues harmonica, most all including lyrics; and now nothing but acoustic guitar.? “I guess you could say I’ve hit ‘rock’ bottom!” says Riddell. “My heart and foundation in music are in rock, blues & jazz, but the foundation of almost all the music I have ever written is Acoustic Guitar. I have always written instrumental pieces here and there over the years and I felt it was time to try something different. When I decided to record a solo guitar instrumental CD, I did so at my home, and my son Evan (7 at the time) was literally sleeping in the next room as I was recording parts of this project. I’m hoping acoustic guitar players will enjoy this project with it’s many different tunings.” This project contains songs written over the years as far back as the mid 1980’s and as recent as January of 2004. All of them are original compositions. Most of these songs were written in the last 4 years and there is a nice mix of 7 different tunings including the 2 bonus tracks. This is music a guitar player might study closely while a non-musician may listen to it as simple background music. One thing’s for sure, this project is what it is. Not a lot of room here for covering up ‘imperfections’ (one of the most overlooked spices in pop culture). Please listen and enjoy!++++++PROJECT TUNINGS USED:(1) Born On The Delta [D-A-D-F#-C-D] (2) For Paul [D-G-D-G-B-D] (3) Jangle [standard] (4) Silvertone [D-G-D-G-B-D] (5) Zebra Rag +6 [standard] (6) Wrong Note, Right?
