Initial pressings of FINGER ELEVEN contain a bonus DVD. Finger Eleven: Scott Anderson (vocals); James Black, Rick Jackett (guitar); Sean Anderson (bass); Rich Baddoe (drums). Recorded at Groovemaster Recording, Chicago, Illinois; The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. It's always somewhat confusing when bands go eponymous on anything but their first album. More often than not, such a decision designates a mid-life crisis of sorts, where said artists are simultaneously trying to reaffirm their identity while reinventing themselves for the future. Canada's Finger Eleven obviously arrived at these crossroads with their third set of foreboding, angst-ridden alt-metal, yet, ironically, the album easily qualifies as their most confident and sincere statement to date. Where its very solid, but concession-prone predecessor, Greyest of Blue Skies, had smacked of pre-fab radio-bound nu-metal sleekness, Finger Eleven represents a far more honest and confident reflection of the band's natural instincts. Clearly the sound of a band embracing their personal creativity wholeheartedly -- no matter what commercial fate it may bring them -- first-half winners like "Complicated Questions," "Stay in Shadow," and the strangely Devo-esque "Good Times," undoubtedly stand out as the most distinctive work of the band's career. Unfortunately, similarly revealing second-half offerings like "Conversations" and "Panic Attack" don't quite measure up in terms of quality songwriting inspiration; and the band's sporadic forays into acoustic numbers, though well-intentioned, exude greater technical competence than outright inspiration. A mixed blessing to be sure, it's a fair assumption that Finger Eleven signifies a personal victory for this Canadian quintet, but only time will confirm its prophecy of a new dawn for this well-intentioned group. [Finger Eleven comes packed with a bonus DVD featuring live performances and behind the scenes studio footage.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia It's not too surprising that Ontario, Canada band Finger Eleven would wind up on Wind-Up Records. With their driving guitars and brooding vocals, they definitely seem like kin with labelmates Creed, Boy Sets Fire, Drowning Pool, 12 Stones, et al. What is fairly surprising is that with their remarkable knack for hooks, their first two albums, THE GREYEST OF BLUE SKIES and TIP, weren't more widely heard. However, that changed with this relentless, infectious, and eponymous record. The opening single, the ironically titled "Good Times," layers guitar over tribal drums, as hyper-insistent vocals assert themselves in a fierce chant before breaking into an undeniable and melodic chorus. It shifts from segment to segment, even drifting into prog-metal. Throughout this album, Finger Eleven cleverly digs into '70s rock, while referencing more contemporaneous hard rockers like Tool, and throwing in ample hooks. Less than Expected. Although not a bad album, this effort does little to improve on the two excellent predecessors. After a decent start, it becomes reminiscent of the weird shift in sound of Stone Temple Pilots' 4th album, then on to the track "Conversations" which gives this album the feel of a lost first effort rather than a follow up to their first two amazing releases. The tracks "Panic Attack" and "Obvious Heart" do their share to rescue the F-11 sound however. Those of you who expect the heavy, driving feel of "Tip" and the equally heavy, somewhat spooky sound of "The Greyest of Blu Skies" may come away from this one somewhat disappointed. Perfect follow up! Once again the Canadian "Finger Eleven" emerge bringing fans another origanal piece of true inspirational art. Every song has it's own tang. Every little piece is broke down and carefully worked on as seen on the free dvd that comes with it. The dvd brings you to realize just how much work went into this album but not only that so much as the energy that pours off the stage when the 5 piece breaks loose. No, they are not neccessarly heavy but more moody. This is my opinion:) Peace and love, God bless! Submitted by jereomykiser (Grayson, KY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Recorded at Bay 7 Studios, Valley Village, California and Sparky Dark Studio, Calabasas, California. While no less a nu-metal authority than Fred Durst was their original benefactor, Jacksonville's Cold has always had a secret weapon in its heavy rock arsenal: mouthpiece. It's mouthpiece Scooter Ward's powerful singing -- not shouting or rapping, like so many of his contemporaries -- that distances he and his mates from the pack. This doesn't mean they're better; indeed, Cold's first two releases weren't consistently strong efforts. However, ...

$11.59 Reissue of their fourth album with the original cover art intact, plus updated liner notes and 'Break Song' (Previously Unissued Studio Version) added as a bonus track.Eight tracks total. The heavy psychedelic group featured drummer Carmine Appice & bassist Tim Bogert. 1998 Sundazed release.
This CD contains four bonus tracks. Personnel: Vince Martell (guitar); Mark Stein (keyboards); Carmine Appice (drums). Audio Mixer: Bob Irwin. Recording information: Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, NY. Photographer: Jim Cummins. Unknown Contributor Roles: Mark Stein; Tim Bogert; Vince Martell; Carmine Appice. Arranger: Charles Morrow. Vanilla Fudge took a more basic stance with Rock 'n' Roll, bringing in Aerosmith's first and the Velvet Underground's last producer, Adrian Barber, to replace Shadow Morton. Guitarist Vinnie Martell sings lead on "Need Love," and it is a quagmire of rock sounds, offset by Mark Stein's "Lord in the Country." The band then goes after a good but non-hit Carole King/Gerry Goffin number, "I Can't Make It Alone." It has that vibe that made "Take Me for a Little While" so important and so timeless, but there's just something missing. This is Vanilla Fudge's trademark sound looking for a new personality. The band started in 1968 by releasing an album of seven cover tunes done Vanilla Fudge-style. Along with Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and a handful of other bands, their sound helped shape Top 40 radio in the '60s while heavily influencing Deep Purple and what that group would do for the '70s. "Street Walking Woman" is OK, and that's the ...

The weakest studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren't entirely successful. More to the point, though, this was their weakest set of material, low lights including filler like "Do It" and "Runnin' Blue," a strange bluegrass-soul blend that was a small hit. On the other hand, about half the record is quite good, especially the huge hit "Touch Me" (their most successful integration of orchestration), the vicious hard rock riffs of "Wild Child," the overlooked "Shaman's Blues," and the lengthy title track, a multi-part suite that was one of the band's best attempts to mix rock with poetry. "Tell All the People" and "Wishful Sinful," both penned by Robbie Krieger, were uncharacteristically wistful tunes that became small hits but were not all that good, and not sung very convincingly by Morrison. ~ Richie Unterberger The most uneven studio album recorded with Jim Morrison in the group, partially because their experiments with brass and strings on about half the tracks weren't entirely successful.
