Sylvian created an impromptu suite of songs for guitar, electronics & voice. The compositions were crafted from improvisational sessions captured live in the studio. Working almost entirely alone, he has created an emotionally raw, minimal work, of immediacy and stark beauty. Although there are elements in his previous body of work that hint at the direction taken here, "blemish" appears to cover new ground in style, content, intensity of emotion and in the seemly open ended nature of the compositions themselves. Adding to the intensity and air of experimentation is the presence of Derek Bailey. Three of the pieces included on 'blemish' were written with and feature, the legendary free-jazz guitarist. The final track of the CD features a haunting electronic arrangement by Christian Fennesz. The album was recorded February 03 & mixed in March.

Personnel includes: David Sylvian, Derek Bailey, Christian Fennesz.
Recorded in February 2003.
Multi-instrumentalist/wordsmith/auteur Sylvian is joined here by avant garde jazz guitar hero Derek Bailey for one of the most adventurous outings of his already adventerous career. Cut in 2003, his 12th album isn't the kind of thing you "get" on the first listen, but stick with it and the rewards are myriad.
The fractured, stark yin to Dead Bees on a Cake's tranquil, sensuous yang, Blemish is an unforeseen detour taken by David Sylvian, who has made eight of his most bare, anguished, and intense songs, all of which are neither pleasant nor the least bit settling. For half of the album, Sylvian is completely alone, accompanied only by his own guitar and electronic treatments. On the others, he is joined by either Derek Bailey or Christian Fennesz, two guitarists with indispensable roles. The opening title track sets the tone, with heavily echoed noise fibers warping and reverberating for nearly 14 minutes. The effects swell and recede at a disquieting but sunken volume, while Sylvian's upfront voice -- more stripped and vulnerable than it was in Japan's "Ghosts" -- slips in lines like "I fall outside of her," "Give me one more chance to do things right," and "Life's for the taking, so they say -- take it away." Bailey's improvised work appears in three songs and is most complementary during "The Good Son," in which his prickles and sudden spasms carry and push, rather than support, Sylvian's voice. "A Fire in the Forest," the album's own "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," lets the listener out with a battered sense of optimism. Featuring an arrangement from Fennesz, a melody struggles to find its way out of twisted fragments and soft beams of noise, as Sylvian sings of his search to reach the sunshine that awaits him above gray skies. Throughout the album, clues are dropped about the events that transpired and the circumstances surrounding them, but it's all left to be pieced together and interpreted by the listener, who will have to sift through the hedged lines, meticulously organized sounds -- from rattling shopping carts to handclaps to delicate fragments of guitar -- and numerous disfigurations of clear-cut linear thought. Blemish is the kind of record that provokes many longtime followers to throw up their arms in aggravation -- it's very much a "final straw" record. A work of beautiful, desolate fragility, Blemish is also the kind of record that will have the opposite effect on a select few, most of whom no doubt obsess over records like Scott Walker's Tilt and Mark Hollis' Mark Hollis. ~ Andy Kellman

Mojo (Publisher) (9/03, p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The music on BLEMISH is much sparser and looser than we are used to from David Sylvian...It works. Sylvian sounds anything but intimidated by Bailey..."

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

4 stars Meditation over melody
Sylvian's latest is a firm departure from pop. He has crafted a collection of improvised meditations, strong in lyrics, but lacking his developed sense of melody. This is a collection to explore and grow into. It doesn't grab you immediately but will need to be savoured. Enjoy.

4 stars Don't listen to this first thing in the morning
David Sylvian will undoubtedly alienate some of his latter-day fans with this release, but his "real" fans will delighted. Reminiscent of, but different than, his experimental work with Holger Czukay, this disc features unconnected dissonant guitar and electronics with David's amazing baritone vocalizations. It is an intensely personal work chronicling the loss of major label support (Virgin) and the freedom that it brings to a creative soul. A stream-of-consciousness effort that bears repeated listening. It's like a poetry slam with a soundtrack. Definitely not recommended for mass-consumption, but essential listening for David's fans.

MC Stands For Revolution
Mountain Con MC Stands For Revolution CDs  (2001)

Blemish
CD $11.59
While the cover is reminiscent of Soviet poster art and the title of the record leads one to expect some sort of Chumbawamba-ish political chest-thumping, this record delivers not messages but coursing thumps. And thank God. A weird cross of hip-hop groove and dobro-drenched honky tonk, Mountain Con are sure to appeal to those on the Beck tip and anyone wondering where country and blues finally remarried. Spot-on call and response, jangly guitars, and fuzz, fuzz, fuzz combine to create a hectic and beautiful stew. This is a wonderful first record. ~ Rob Ferrier "It isn't often that one hears something totally unique, the sort of sound that might just start something big."-All Music GuideAfter migrating to post-grunge Seattle from rural Montana, the boys that would become Mountain Con began recording jam sessions at the late night parties that raged in their basement. In the fall of 1999 Mountain Con recorded and pressed 500 copies of an EP entitled “The Highpoint Project”. This EP landed them on a Friday night bill at The Crocodile Café, one of the hottest clubs in Seattle, where they performed live as Mountain Con for the first time. The EP also earned the band a slot at the 2000 SXSW music festival where they met and were signed by producer and label owner Tom Rothrock. Mountain Con’s debut album, “The MC Stands for Revolution”, on Tom Rothrock’s Acid Blues label was a collection of intelligent songs full of humor and irony. The record hijacked Beck’s “Odelay” era sound and took it on a joy ride. The result is an appealing patchwork of country and urban sounds, direct from the damp dark basement to your car stereo. The group has always been a recording experiment first and a rock band second. James, Mike, Pierre, Swede and Ben have been playing and recording together under various names since their high school days in Missoula, Montana. Strangely, from the very beginning they recorded ...

The Living End took the turn of the century by storm. With the Clash as their stylistic outrider, the trio scooted snotty and poppy across Australia and Europe before hooking up with the Warped Tour for some crucial U.S. cred-building. Three years on, the Living End has returned to find the old school overcrowded with ...

Heart Beats
Thousand Times Yes Heart Beats CD  (2006)

Blemish
CD $12.69
The city of Detroit is unlike any other city nestled in the diverse confines of the United States. Its streets are littered with personality; step one way and you’ll find yourself entrenched in a mysterious cloud of smoke bubbling up from the cities countless sewers. A step in another direction could lead you into the cultural avalanche that is Mexican town. But, no matter where you go, diversity (as well as a little bit of danger) is guaranteed to rigidly tap your shoulder and demand attention. Check that. It’ll grab you by the shoulders and shake you to your knees, leaving you forever affected by the struggles it’s seen throughout its years. It’s fitting, then, that one of the most diverse and dynamic rock bands the city can call its own has not only drawn inspiration from this metropolis in waiting, but echoes it’s every nook and cranny in their ever evolving, hardly derivative and character-filled epicness. That band is A Thousand Times Yes; and like the city of Detroit, they have embraced an ethic purely based on defying the expected. When a direction seems fully plotted within the context of a song, the three horsemen (actually two horsemen and one horsewoman — drummer Greg Evangelista “Lull Tucker”, singer/guitarist Joe Hoffman “Casper Von Hoffman” and singer/bassist Audra Marks “Sparx” ) snap the reigns and charge full on down rarely beaten paths of manic tempos, restrained beauty and bursts of poetic fury. Comparisons could be countless or very few; it just simply won’t matter once the fevered rush of the band’s push and pull sets in. It can be as fast paced as Jefferson Ave. in the middle of a workday, or as stark and haunting as the Cass Corridor at 4 a.m. And that’s the beauty of a band intent on wooing you with the charms of heart and ...
