Between the Buried and Me: Tommy Rogers (vocals, keyboards); Shane Brown, Paul Andrew Waggoner (guitar); Kevin Falk (bass guitar); Terry Jason Roe (drums). Between the Buried and Me's debut album for Victory Records, The Silent Circus, showcases a great amount of diversity for a metal band, very similar to heavier bands like Opeth and Dillinger Escape Plan. One minute the band may be playing thrash metal and the next they're flowing into death metal growls and thick guitar riffs. They certainly show a mastery of the hardcore and metal styles that many bands their age can take a lot longer to understand. The metal take on things can seemingly change in a flash as lead singer Tommy Rogers fleshes out his vocals and utilizes the keyboards to create something that sounds more like it should be on a Smashing Pumpkins album. This might make some fans of heavy music grimace in objection, but there's definitely a lot to be encouraged by with The Silent Circus. ~ Kurt MorrisCMJ (9/29/03, p.24) - "...A coherent, abusive, seamless album..." $9.69 The Black Dahlia Murder: Brian Eschbach (vocals, guitar); Trevor Strnad (vocals); John Kempainem (guitar); David Lock (bass); Cory Grady (drums). Producers: The Black Dahlia Murders, Mike Hasty. Personnel: Brian Eschbach (vocals, guitar); Trevor Strnad (vocals); Jon Kemppainen (guitar); Cory Grady (drums). Recording information: Cloud City Studios (02/01/2003-02/15/2003). Photographer: Brian Ebert. Unhallowed, the debut full-length from Detroit, MI, quintet the Black Dahlia Murder is a well-executed slice of melodic death/black metal in the tradition of Swedish masters Dissection and At the Gates. They've clearly studied those bands, as is reflected in the racing, dual-harmonized guitar riffs that form the foundation of this album. The vocals are a little different, though, consisting of a high-pitched shriek that's complemented ...
| | Burnt By The Sun Perfect Is The Enemy Of The Good CD (2003)
Silent Circus
$11.89 Burnt By The Sun includes: John Adubato, Paul Miller. Producers: Burnt By The Sun, Matt Bayles. Recorded at Trax East Studio, South River, New Jersey in May 2003. Consider this the true follow-up to Burnt by the Sun's hugely promising self-titled debut EP. This is the group's second full-length, following 2002's Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution, an album that was widely acclaimed yet still somewhat disappointing to some fans of the more experimental, grindcore-leaning EP. Soundtrack found the band reorienting to a sort of all-American, middle-of-the-road hardcore-metal fusion that, while still fairly heavy, seemed tame in comparison to that earlier release. Lyrically, it also came off as preachy and pedantic in spots. This disc remedies those problems, though. Musically, ...

Between the Buried and Me: Tommy Rogers (vocals, keyboards); Shane Blay, Paul Andrew Waggoner (guitar); Kevin Falk (bass guitar); Terry Jason Roe (drums). A group such as Between the Buried and Me is rare to find, as the jaw-dropping talent possessed by these five men seems almost too good to be true. While their eponymous debut is a muddled affair, the amazing skill of these musicians is quite obvious, careening from one extreme to another with little regard for human safety. The only real problem noticeable on this disc is ...
| | Unearth Oncoming Storm CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Silent Circus
$9.69 New Version Now Has 2 New Tracks.
Unearth: Trevor Phipps (vocals); Ken Susi, Buz McGrath (guitar); John "Slo" Maggard (bass guitar); Mike Justian (drums). If Unearth wanted to cover a classic Dean Martin hit, the logical choice would be 1960's "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" -- not because The Oncoming Storm sounds anything at all like the late Rat Pack crooner, but because Unearth does, in fact, feel like a kick in the head. Mercy is not a high priority on this 2004 release, which demonstrates just how nasty, punishing, and downright vicious ...

Recorded at Barnyard Studios, Essex, United Kingdom. Dutch reissue of 1992 EMI Records album While 1992's Fear of the Dark was definitely more of a return to form for Iron Maiden, it still wasn't quite on par with their exceptional work from the '80s. Easily an improvement over 1990's lackluster No Prayer for the Dying (both musically and sonically), the album debuted on the U.K. ...
