"Bellingham's The Pale raise the bar on local bands with their thoughtful, dynamic approach to indie rock. Melodically infective lyrics explore the science of sensitivity. Indie drums and guitar meld excellently with lo-fi vocals and loungy keys. "-M.Myers, KEXP Seattle."Employing dynamic swings in tempo and volume, the Pale gravitate toward the prettier end of the sonic spectrum, with snaky melodies atop patient, sometimes dramatically intensifying rhythm tracks. The Pale play equally well with indie rockers, headbangers and power-poppers, borrowing a little something from each genre to hammer out an identity all their own." -Larry O. Dean, Amplifier Magazine "This ten-year-old Washington outfit scripts poppy melodrama that'll keep you bouncing...Delightfully free of goopy whining." - SPIN17.march.2004"If The O.C. has name-checked Bright Eyes and Death Cab for Cutie just a little too much for your liking, reclaim some indie cred by spinning the third release from the Pale. The Northwest's latest rock hype is a pleasant pop gem, full of jangly guitars and mid-tempo tunes with chilled-out keyboards punctuating singer Gabe Archer's often frail lyrics. The kids might call it emo, but you'll realize that the Pale isn't part of that trend... When Gravity pulls it together with sunshine-covered Beach Boys melodies and a lot of bouncing pop, the job gets done."-E Online.comAlbum hit #1 on indie station KEXP 90.3Album hit Seattle's Top 20 Sales for 5 months Album hit #1 on 107.7 The END's People Choice CountdownSidecho Records Los Angeles, CA www.sidecho.com Always Never Records Bellingham, WA
The Pale include: Gabe Archer (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Cameron Nicklaus (guitar); Lance Fisher (bass); Greg Swineheart (drums, bacground vocals). As pretty and melodic as indie pop can be, its practitioners often couch pop/rock flourish and hooks in layers of purposeful art damage, or style points impenetrable to the common man. The Pale moves in a different direction, funneling the cutesy romantic sensibilities of types like Tullycraft into utterly un-ironic pop music akin to Wheat or the Push Kings. They don't try for much more than an attractive progression, plenty of warm keys, and charmingly soft vocals from Gabe Archer -- they don't need to. "Reasons to Try" does rock tense, crunchy distortion in a nod to early Get Up Kids, but even here there are "Ba ba bah"'s in the chorus. Similarly, despite its wiry and throbbing urgency, the title track turns on Archer's wavering affirmation, "I will wait here darling/To make sure you are okay." Somebody get this guy a box of Puffs! The giddy, irresistible "Wake Up Call," "Big Dumb Smile"'s tale of teenage mischief, "Trash"'s Luna references -- these are the best moments on Gravity Gets Things Done. They clarify how happy the Pale is just to be here, how this is about making us feel good, not just exclusive or cool. ~ Johnny Loftus

Gravity Gets Things Done
$13.65 Thompson is one of the master musicians & storytellers of the 60s British rock scene. Seminal releases with Fairport Convention & 30+ years of solo albums & assorted collaborations (Zeppelin, Hendrix, Floyd, Bonnie Raitt, etc.) mark an eclectic & uncompromising career. This, his first studio record since 1999, is an intimate, smoky album of narrative songs, recorded as a trio with minimal overdubs, & allowing him to show off his guitar playing. Cooking Vinyl. 2003.
The first 35,000 copies sold included a limited edition bonus CD, including tracks from Richard Thompson's 1000 YEARS OF POPULAR MUSIC show and footage from his BBC documentary. Personnel: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, accordion, harmonium); Danny Thompson (double bass); Michael Jerome (drums, percussion, background vocals); Judith Owen (background vocals). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California. Personnel: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, accordion, harmonium); Danny Thompson (double bass); Michael Jerome (drums, background vocals); Judith Owen (background vocals). Richard Thompson is the sort of artist destined to be a cherished cult item rather than a bona fide star, which at the dawn of the 21th century puts him in an uncomfortable place in the music industry -- being able to reliably sell 100,000 copies of an album makes you too small for a major label, no matter how long they've kept you on the roster. In 2000, after a dozen years with Capitol Records, Thompson's contract was not renewed, and 2003's The Old Kit Bag found him recording for an independent for the first time since 1985. Creatively, this actually turns out to be a good thing; after the periodically excessive and self-conscious production Mitchell Froom imposed on nearly all of Thompson's releases for Capitol, 1999's Mock Tudor (produced by Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf) found Thompson going for a more lean and live sound, and with John Chelew at the controls, Thompson follows suit on The Old Kit Bag. Cut in a straightforward and stripped-down manner, with just bassist Danny Thompson, drummer Michael Jerome, and harmony vocalist Judith Owen along for company, The Old Kit Bag captures Thompson in spare but sympathetic circumstances; the performances are strong and confident, without a ...

$8.99 James William HindleProspect Park (Badman Recording Co.) What, you didn't know that British folk is suddenly hip this year? Don't you read Mike McGuirk? It's true. All those Richard Thompson jokes made by smarmy young music critics have come back to bite them all in the arse like a pair of 20-sided dice with rotting, crooked teeth. It may have started when the folks at Volkswagen took ...
