| | Cannibal Corpse Butchered At Birth CD (1991) Bonus Tracks; Enhanced CD
Only Tools And Corpses
$9.69 In the early '90s, Cannibal Corpse acquired a small cult in the death metal underground by embracing some of the most gruesome lyrics the subgenre had to offer. Thriving on shock value, the band inspires comparisons to GWAR and comes across as a parody of death metal and grindcore more than anything. Like its previous album, the equally twisted Eaten Back to Life, Butchered ...

| | Gorerotted New Dawn For The Dead CD (2005)
Only Tools And Corpses
$10.69 Gorerotted: Junko, Matthew, Tim, Ben Goreskin, The Wilson. Personnel: Thelma Wilson (vocals). Recording information: Aexxys Art Studio, Schwandorf, Germany (02/01/2005-02/20/2005); Insomnia Studios, Norwich, England (02/01/2005-02/20/2005). When a band's song titles have included "Gagged, Shagged, Bodybagged," "Bed 'Em, Behead 'Em," "Zombie Graveyard Rape Bonanza," "Can't Fit Her Limbs in the Fridge," and "Stab Me Till I Cum," it is safe to make two assumptions: (1) the band's members have seen way too many bad horror movies, and (2) they come from the Carcass/Cannibal Corpse/Necrophagia/Macabre school of shock value. Lyrically, A New Dawn for the Dead owes a lot to the American and British death metal and grindcore bands that came out of the late '80s and early '90s -- and like Carcass' Symphonies of Sickness or Cannibal Corpse's Butchered at Birth, this 2005 release is delivered in a very satirical, tongue-in-cheek fashion. Gorerotted's material simply oozes with irony. And yet, it would be a mistake to think of A New Dawn for the Dead as an exact replica of old-school grindcore. Rather, this gorefest is best described as a goofy death metal/black ...
| | Langley Schools Music Project Innocence & Despair CD (2001)
Only Tools And Corpses
$13.59 The Langley Schools Music Project INNOCENCE & DESPAIR comprises 1970s recordings performed by a grade school vocal ensemble singing the hits of the day (and other famous rock songs), under the direction of ensemble leader Hans Fenger. Recorded in 1976 and 1977. Includes liner notes by Irwin Chusid and Hans Fenger. When it was reissued in 2001, this private-press recording of a 1970s British Columbia elementary school band and choir became a hipster must-have, largely due to its quirky backstory. But the album has a tangible sonic appeal that transcends its colorfully quaint origins. Listening to the massed voices of these grade-school kids singing in unison on bare-bones, lo-fi arrangements of `60s and `70s hits by the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and others, one gets the feeling of tuning in an oldies radio frequency from an alternate universe where professional singers and players are replaced by some white-robed phalanx of post-hippie cherubs. It's a singular experience, to be sure, and likely an acquired taste for some, but none the less appealing for that. And besides, when was the last time you heard `70s Canadian art-poppers Klaatu's "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" (later recorded by the Carpenters) and Michael Murphey's folk-rock cowboy ghost story "Wildfire" on the same album? These 19 tracks are taken from the two albums Langley Elementary School students recorded and released in small quantities for themselves and their friends in British Columbia in the mid-'70s. Innocence & Despair is a subtitle etched onto the sleeve, to which could rejoin, is it the innocence of ineptitude, or the ineptitude of innocence? On its own merits, it's not great listening. The kids are engaged and having fun, certainly; there's not much despair here. But they sound close to what you would expect 50-strong vocal ensembles of nine- to 12-year-olds singing in a school gymnasium to sound like. What does probably lift this above most other vanity school music class pressings (and you know there must be plenty more where this came from) is the spooky, minimal strangeness of most of the arrangements. It does indeed sound refreshing and interesting to hear the Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, and Neil Diamond songs with weird off-kilter xylophones, off-the-wall cymbal crashes, and teacher Hans Fenger's basic singalong acoustic guitar and piano. It's more valuable ...
