36 Crazy Fists' 2002 Roadrunner debut was jagged, pissed-off, and basic, its rigid boundaries refreshing in a post-hardcore movement muddled with mixing-board hocus-pocus and white elephant string sections. Expansion from such a singular dimension is natural, even imperative for a follow-up effort; thankfully, these kindler, gentler Fists don't forget how to clench. At first, it doesn't look good. Bitterness the Star's rust, tundra, and heavy equipment motif has been replaced with arty, beating-heart-melting-the-icicles-of-my-soul imagery, and a title right out of the Random Emo Generator. A Snow Capped Romance also finds vocalist Brock Lindow writing pensive lyrics, more poetic than polemic. That said, the hammering rhythms and hysterical screaming of "At the End of August" and "The Heart and the Shape" ensure 36 Crazy Fists haven't completely forsaken the metal or the 'core to build a crisis of conscience platform. Lindow does alternate his berserk howl with a more conventional wail -- this feels like the influence of producer James Paul Wisner, who's worked with Further Seems Forever and Dashboard Confessional. "Bloodwork" and "Skin and Atmosphere" are Snow Capped Romance's biggest departure, relying on big vocal melodies and even bigger dynamic shifts to give 36 Crazy Fists' roguish post-hardcore an accessible front. There's also an echoing mid-album rumination on Lindow's Alaskan youth. But that brief interlude is a setup for a second half that mixes in that frenzied old hard stuff with consistently interesting melodic departures. "With Nothing Underneath" is at least mostly metal, while "Destroy the Map" features some gripping vocal dynamics between Lindow and guest pal Raithon Clay. Most representative might be "Installing the Catheter," which gradually replaces the unfortunate Hoobastank-ness of its start with left-field spoken word and a meaty, thrashing finale. A Snow Capped Romance occasionally stumbles on the loose gravel of conventionalism, but it always regains its footing on the rock. ~ Johnny Loftus

3 stars Above and Beyond!
"slit wrist theory" was the fist song i heard by 36Crazyfists and was instantly a personal favorite. Bitterness the Star however did not live up to the potential this band has, leaving me with enjoying "an agreement called forever" and "left hand charity" for the rest of the album. Snow Capped Romance on the other hand is EXACTLY the album i was hoping they would produce! almost every song is perfectly put together with amazing music and the rediculous talent of Brock Lindow's vocals, who joins the ranks of Jonathan Davis, Chino Moreno, Ville Valo, and Christian Lindskog. it took them a couple years but they nailed it with this one!

Though it was their second album, SOUNDS OF SILENCE was the record that introduced Simon & Garfunkel to the world at large. When the original, acoustic version of the title tune (included on the debut album) was given a rock sheen here, courtesy of a hastily added electric backing track, folk-rock was invented, and Paul and Art were catapulted to superstardom. The songs here follow in that electrified direction for the most part, with the widescreen irony of "Blessed" buoyed by plangent guitar and drums, and the paranoid "Somewhere They Can't Find Me" pushed to neurotic extremes by an insistent rhythm section.
SOUNDS OF SILENCE marked the introduction proper of Simon as sensitive song poet: intellectual, well-read, politely iconoclastic, self-consciously poetic--the perfect '60s folk-pop idol. Fortunately, Simon's melodic and lyrical prowess and the duo's beautiful post-Everly Brothers harmonies were enough to counteract any intrinsic tendencies toward pretension. From the romantic melodrama of "Kathy's Song" to the anthem of alienation "I Am a Rock," SOUNDS OF SILENCE was the ultimate sonic portrait of the artist as a young man. Somewhere, a young Morrissey was taking notes.
Simon & Garfunkel's second album was a radical departure from their first (Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.), owing to its being recorded in the wake of "The Sound of Silence" single, with its overdubbed electric instrument backing, topping the charts. Paul ...

Then And Now
David Cassidy Then And Now CD  (2002) (Import) Australia

Snow Capped Romance
CD $9.39  Top 500
In the first half of the 70's David Cassidy was the biggest teen idol in the world, selling over 25 million records. It all started in the U.S. where he was given the lead in The Partridge Family and the rest is history. All his major hits are included in this package plus new tracks, including the bonus track 'Could It Be Forever' his duet with Hear'say. This is the first time there has been a David Cassidy ultimate collection on CD. Personnel includes: David Cassidy (vocals); Michael Smith, Mike Melvoin (arranger, conductor); Hugh Burns, Fridrick Karlsson, Jimmy McIntosh, Dennis Budimir, Louie Shelton (guitar); Harvey De Souza, Laurence Jackson, Darrell Kok, Jan Schmolk (violin); Bob Smissen, Tim Grant (viola); Jo Knight, William Schofield (cello); Paul Fawcus, Scott Garland (flute, saxophone); Pat White, Mark Cumberland (trumpet, flugelhorn); Dennis Rollins (trombone); Mae McKenna, Janet Mooney, Lance Ellington, Phil Nicholl, Candace Davis Martin, Lisa Mayer (background vocals).
Producers include: Ted Carfrae, Mike Melvoin, David Cassidy, Alan Tarney, Peter Bunetta.
Engineers include: Michael Eckart, Eric Sarafin, John Hudson.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Australian edition features the bonus track "Could It Be Forever", a duet with Hearsay.
While both David Cassidy and the Partridge Family have been at least partially anthologized over the years, it remains a thing of wonder that nobody has yet sat down to compile the best of both into one all-encompassing package -- all the more so since Cassidy's personal appeal remains as high as any '70s icon could dream of climbing. Cassidy himself has toyed with his past on occasion, with releases ranging from a mid-'80s live hits album to the savage reinvention of "I Think I Love You," which so dignified his 1998 Slamajama album. Then and Now, however, goes further than either he, or his past ...
