| | Matt Jorgensen Hope CD Matt Jorgensen Discography of CDs
Following-up on their critically acclaimed "Quiet Silence" (ORN #82401), Matt Jorgensen + 451 releases their third studio recording entitled "Hope," a collection of nine original compositions and arrangements of music by Coldplay and Charles Mingus. Matt
Personnel: Matt Jorgensen (drums); Mark Taylor (alto & tenor saxophones); Hans Teuber, Rob Davis (tenor saxophone); David Marriott (trombone); Ryan Burns (piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Phil Sparks (bass). Recorded at Studio X, Avast, Seattle, Washington and Super Natural, Oregon City, Oregon in 2003. Personnel: Matt Jorgensen (drums); Mark Taylor (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Hans Teuber (tenor saxophone); David Marriott, Jr. (trombone). Recording information: Avast Recording, Seattle, WA (07/28/2003-12/08/2003); Studio X, Seattle, WA (07/28/2003-12/08/2003); Supernatural Sound, Oregon City, OR (07/28/2003-12/08/2003). Photographer: Matt Jorgensen. The fourth album from Matt Jorgensen's 451 group continues the line of somewhat traditional modern jazz (if that can be considered a proper name for the style) with a definite forward-thinking aspect built in. The album introduces itself with a groove-laden (and aptly named) "Slinky," powered in part by Phil Sparks' powerful bass, before moving into an interesting cover of a Coldplay song. The first part of the "Hope" series (a trio of title tracks) is a much more ethereal work, making use of some violin riffing and a good bit of synth work. It's certainly off the beaten path from what precedes it. Matt Otto's "Che" has a somewhat more pensive feel, but the energy is released via some lengthy soloing by Mark Taylor and Rob Davis on their respective saxes. "Pack Sack," the first of a trio of Jorgensen originals in a row, is a very hot number, letting the quartet bask in their own speed and strength. "Peacefulness" heads back toward the sparseness and ethereal mood of the earlier "Hope" installment, but with a heavier emphasis on the sax here. Using "Peacefulness" as a nice lead-in reminder of the previous installment, the second installment of "Hope" (actually the third installment, as they're presented intentionally out of order) returns the violin and synths, but fills in the sparseness with a heavier, subtly Bo Diddley-esque beat throughout thanks to Jorgensen. "Sanguine," an original from saxophonist Taylor, is a more relaxed outing with the quartet, but with a somewhat passionate (rather fitting for the title) atmosphere hidden inside. Pianist Ryan Burns also gets a nice shot at displaying his prowess here. A rendition of Mingus' "Fables of Faubus" makes for an interesting mix, but more importantly perhaps shows off the ability of the bandmembers to work together in unusual ways, playing off one another in a manner completely different from the rest of the album. "Ibrahymn" goes back to the relaxed state of the earlier "Sanguine" with a similar passion, but a little more rhythm perhaps. The album ends on the middle section of the "Hope" trilogy, back to the spacy-sparse arrangements of violin, synths, and sax, as well as a nice tambura drone. As one would expect, this one sits firmly between the emptiness of "Pt. 1" and the driving drums of "Pt. 3," with something of both within, but yet something original in its improvisation -- a nice way to sum up the album. For a clump of artists out of the jazz spotlight's focus, this is an altogether outstanding piece of work -- a little something for everyone, but a lot of solid modern jazz for all. ~ Adam Greenberg

Hope
$12.09 Personnel: Melody Gardot (vocals, guitar, piano). Audio Mixers: Al Schmitt; Steve Genewick. Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed her music. Gardot's second album, MY ONE AND ONLY THRILL, dispells that sense entirely: this gorgeous collection of lavishly orchestrated jazz-pop ballads is the work of a genuinely talented singer-songwriter. Gardot's melodic sense is greatly matured: opening track "Baby I'm A Fool" and "Lover Undercover" have the feel of new standards in the ...

$8.99 Personnel: Kenny G (saxophone); Ramon Stagnaro (nylon-string guitar); Walter Afanasieff (keyboards, programming); Brian Bromberg (bass instrument); David Stone (bass guitar); Peter Erskine, Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). Featuring both expected choices like Paul McCartney's deathless "Yesterday" and Sammy Kahn's "It Had To Be You," plus more offbeat entries like James Blunt's hit "You're Beautiful" and Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up," Kenny G's THE MOST ROMANTIC MELODIES OF ALL TIME finds the smooth-jazz sax master doing what he does best--that is, providing nearly flawless renderings of the most infectious and relaxing melodies around. There are bound to be those who will simply refuse to give Kenny G's 2006 release, I'm in the Mood for Love, half a chance, and it's a crying shame. Returning to a purely instrumental approach following At Last...The Duets Album (which featured a great ...
