Jackass includes: Toby Emery (vocals); Big Dick Chevy (guitar); Ben Dayo (guitarron); Pete Finestone (percussion). Personnel: Toby Emery (vocals, acoustic guitar); Erika Harding (vocals); Zander Schloss (guitar); Josh Achziger (Wurlitzer organ); Pete Finestone (drums, percussion); Chris Byrd, Stan Gonzales (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Steve Kravac. Recording information: Gourmet sound, Encino, CA; Ton Recording Facility, Echo Park, CA. Photographer: Erika Harding. Arranger: Jackass. Comprised of former members of Bad Religion and Ill Repute, the unfortunately monikered Jackass winds up being as absurd as it is effective on its country- and punk-fostered debut, Plastic Jesus. Boasting two pop covers that are less novelty than they are knock 'em dead, frontman Toby Emery leads his co-conspirators through charming, stripped-down piss takes on Madonna's "Music" and the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way." Jackass' own tunes are just as fun, even if its members mock country music as much as they embrace it on engaging, contagious songs like "Fuck o' Dear" and "When You Go." Sure, a sense of humor is required to appreciate the disc, but anyone who checks the album cover -- where toy versions of the Devil and Jesus are depicted duking it out -- ought to know what he's in for. ~ John D. Whatever the truth of this band's semi-cryptic identity (though guitarist/vocalist Bob Malloy is very definitely a member of Strapping Fieldhands), it certainly doesn't affect the quality of music on River of Many Dead Fish. Just over a half-hour long, it's a fun collection of semi-garagey indie pop, with a tendency to clean, clear vocals ...

Plastic Jesus
$214.65 (8-CD box set with hardcover book) This set includes everything from Sedaka's first ultra-rare Melba session to the end of his RCA contract in 1966. Also features many unissued recordings, as well as a number of recordings previously only available in el
This complete anthology of recordings by famous pop vocalist, Neil Sedaka, features more than 200 tracks. Issued in 2003, this staggeringly thorough eight-disc box set by the Bear Family label presents the early work of Neil Sedaka. Drawing material from 1956 to '66, the collection features the Brooklyn-born singer's initial streak of pop hits, including the buoyant, love-struck "Calendar Girl" and the upbeat yet wistful "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," both of which were co-penned by Sedaka's frequent writing partner, Howard Greenfield. OH CAROL also delves into lesser-known numbers (the rollicking "Circulate"), and offers up a slew of non-English recordings (the title track ...

| | Starflyer 59 My Island CD (2006)
Plastic Jesus
$14.05 Starflyer 59's Jason Martin writes flat-out classic pop songs and then drapes a lot of shoegazer-y cobwebs around them as if worried that their brilliance might hurt the eyes. But you can't hide a great song no matter how hard you try, and MY ISLAND is rife with them. Highlights include "Mic the Mic," a tough little rocker with an insistent guitar riff; the slightly sinister "Nice Guy" (which makes you wonder if he really is one); and "Pearl of Great Price," which sounds for all the world like an outtake from PSYCHOCANDY. Starflyer 59 has been quietly releasing some of the best guitar rock of the last half-decade. 2006's My Island does absolutely nothing to break up the string of smartly produced, expertly played, and melody-rich albums Jason Martin and friends have snuck under the radar. In fact, it may just be their best yet. The album uses the same basic template of layered guitars, subtle keyboards, and Martin's gentle vocals as before, but while the last couple records moved toward a more adult and mellow sound, My Island has more energy. Much more. Songs like the opener "The Frontman, I Win" and the pounding rocker "Mic the Mic" have propulsive rhythms, spiky guitars, and a wiry, urgent sound that jumps out of the speakers. Even the songs that aren't quite so uptempo benefit from a newfound brightness ...
| | Prince Ali Curb Side Service CD (2007)
Plastic Jesus
$10.39 Though the aggressive, staccatoed flow rapper Prince Ali employs is more often found in the colder, darker climes of East Coast cities like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, the beats he uses are purely Californian. A member of the ever-growing crew/label Hiero Imperium, the Bay Area MC makes sure to shout out to his home throughout his full-length debut, Curb Side Service, sometimes directly, like in "California Cliffnotes" ("California finesse, women be feeling us/Like Ali says, we hit 'em with the syllabus," labelmate Pep Love spits), and through the guests he invites onboard (Planet Asia, A-Plus), but more often in what he chooses to rhyme over. Though the producers involved don't have much in terms of name recognition, they're all clearly inspired by the West Coast sound. The first half or so of the album is pure G-funk, with fat, smooth bass and synths ...
