The most enduring and uncompromising death metal band offers this 13-song slab of cannibalistic calamity, sure to astound diehard fans and disgust the politicians and critics who hate them so much. Produced by Neil Kernon, this is the uncensored digipak version with Vincent Locke artwork that will gross out even those hardened to serious gore imagery. Comes with a bonus DVD, "The Making Of The Wretched Spawn."
Cannibal Corpse: George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (vocals); Jack Owen, Pat O'Brien (guitar); Alex Webster (bass); Paul Mazurkiewicz (drums). Recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios, Tornillo, Texas. For album number nine, Wretched Spawn, Cannibal Corpse continue on with much the same style of gore-themed death metal that had made them a mainstay of the stateside scene for a decade-and-a-half. Bassist Alex Webster and guitarist Jack Owen write most of the songs here, respectively, and those songs are pretty much what you've come to expect from Cannibal Corpse by this point -- musically pulverizing and lyrically unsettling. Vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher is as unrelenting as usual, especially on such songs as "Frantic Disembowelment," where he switches from growling to screaming with seeming ease. Wretched Spawn is overall a pretty brief album, clocking in just under 45 minutes, as few of the 13 songs break the four-minute mark. The title track is an exception, as are the lumbering "Festering in the Crypt" and the thrashing album-closer, "They Deserve to Die" -- these three longer songs being some of the more interesting ones here, given their unique characteristics. Most of the others are rather straight-ahead death metal blasts, and while they're on the mark stylistically, they may seem a bit workmanlike to longtime fans who have heard all this before. And that's perhaps the one lurking problem with Wretched Spawn -- it sounds great and is everything you'd expect it to be, but it's nothing new for this veteran band, who long ago perfected their death metal attack. If you're perfectly fine with the status quo, or are perhaps new to Cannibal Corpse, you'll surely find much delight here; however, if you're looking for something beyond another run-of-the-mill album from the band, you'll probably want to pass this one over. Unlike more memorable albums such as Tomb of the Mutilated (1992) and Bleeding (1994) where the band took its music to another level, Wretched Spawn is simply Cannibal Corpse continuing on with their trademark mayhem, seemingly confined by or content with their own musical boundaries, for better or worse. [Wretched Spawn is accompanied by a making-of DVD.] ~ Jason Birchmeier

This doesn't come short of that, this album is just amazing and has some great technicality. Great A solid release from Cannibal Corpse. Corpsegridner's vocals are unforgiving and brutal. The guitars are spot on, delivering crushing riffs and insane solos, and as always, Alex Webster's bass shredding is madness. The best songs on here are Severed Head Stoning, Psychotic Precision, The Wretched Spawn, and Frantic Disembowelment, but all are pretty good. This was the first CC and death metal album I purchased, and I would reccomend it to newcomers. Submitted by kento259 (Iowa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

DEATH METAL GODS!!! Haven't heard this one yet, but have heard everything else. Cannibal Corpse is the best example of death metal, period. They are one of the fore fathers of the music genre, next to deicide and obituary. As far as sir happy pooper, maybe he should listen to "The Bleeding". It has the rhythym he's looking for. I've always loved cannibal corpse for the artwork they create. Submitted by Christopher (Pembroke Pines, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$22.05 (Budget priced 4-CD box set) This is a comprehensive overview of the career of Jack Teagarden, a pioneer of the jazz trombone, whose star quality filled the stage (as did his laidback vocals). This set traces his career through both of his stints with Ar
Personnel: Jack Teagarden; Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby. In 2005 the Proper label came out with BIG "T", a chronologically presented four-CD set packed with 92 recordings dating from 1928-1953, featuring the Texas-born trombonist and vocalist Weldon Leo Jack Teagarden (1905-1964). While other labels have gone to the trouble of assembling more meticulous and thorough editions, Proper's approach is to illuminate a healthy range of selected examples from various segments of his recording career. Note that ASV/Living Era did something similar with their more compact double-disc edition, entitled BIG T: A HUNDRED YEARS FROM TODAY. The Proper box opens with a series of well-chosen examples from his activity as a sideman in New York during the late '20s. He is heard with bands led by Roger Wolfe Kahn, Ben Pollack, Eddie Condon, Louis Armstrong, and Red Nichols, as well as the Louisiana Rhythm Kings, the Mound City Blue Blowers, and the expanded nine-piece edition of Fats Waller & His Buddies. Teagarden's first recording sessions as a leader took place in 1930. A few of those early efforts are nestled in with examples of his work with an orchestra under the leadership of violinist Joe Venuti and guitarist Eddie Lang, and with Irving Mills & His Hotsy Totsy Gang, a ten-piece ensemble that included cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. Judging from the evidence included in this anthology, the contract that kept Teagarden roped in as a member of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra during the years 1933-1939 does not appear to have been all that exclusive or difficult to break, for during that period he was able to record as leader of his own orchestra, and with groups led by Condon, Frankie Trumbauer, Adrian Rollini, and Benny Goodman, who featured young Billie Holiday on "Riffin' the Scotch." Teagarden's resurgence of complete autonomy is represented by his recordings with the Metronome All-Star Band, the Capitol Jazzmen, Bud Freeman's Famous Chicagoans, Eddie Condon's Orchestra, Teagarden's own Big Eight, and his increasingly popular big band. ...

Wretched Spawn
$13.59 Audio Remasterers: Pete Reiniger; Will Chase. Author: Paul Laurence Dunbar. Introduction by: Robert H. Cataliotti. Photographer: Ruby Dee. There are no sound recordings of Frederick Douglass, whose fiery speeches in support of the abolition of slavery and his passionate pleas for women's rights between 1852 and 1888 are prescient wonders. With a robust voice and his charismatic appearance, Douglass had a clear and true vision of what democracy in America should look like, and that view is perhaps even more vital in the 21st century. Moe Asch's Folkways Records had actor Ossie Davis record four of those speeches in 1972, releasing them as a pair of LPs, THE MEANING OF JULY 4 FOR THE NEGRO in 1975 and FREDERICK DOUGLASS'S SPEECHES in 1977. This set combines four of the speeches from those two LPs adding a detailed and fascinating ...
