The Hurt Process includes: Darren Thomas (drums), Alun, Dan, Duncan, Tom. Audio Mixer: Cameron Webb. Recording information: Maple Studios, Santa Anna, CA. Illustrator: Derek Hess. Photographer: Aubrey Edwards. On their first full-length release, the Hurt Process played a formulaic brand of rock common to the late '90s and early 2000s -- that is, a blend of punk, hardcore, metal, and pop; much alternation of all-out crunching passages with more subdued, contemplative ones; and vocals that ran the gamut from a throat-full-o'-razor-blades growl to high, yearning sweet harmonies. It might not be too distinctive, but it's tight and well done here, almost slickly so. "I'm just drowning in confused emotion, I don't know where to...stand and how to feel," they sing in "Clarity," and that's a sentiment that runs through much of the material: young guys in turbulence trying to connect in the face of a reality that's more difficult and complex than they're prepared for, though the tone isn't as despairing here as it is in many releases of this sort. A lot of it turns out to be about stormy personal relationships when you read the fine print, though their horizons aren't strictly limited to such subject matter, as demonstrated by the pirate tale "The Beast Sails In" and some other lyrics here and there. Perhaps this is the reaction of a "rockist," but they would have done well to dispense with the almost gratuitously ugly, gravelly vocal bits and focus on the more conventional higher-range singing and harmonies, as they're actually not bad vocalists when they take that line of attack. ~ Richie Unterberger Hurt Process Drive By Monologue Songs Drive By Monologue Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) The best is yet to come! This debut album rocks with some awesome songs- most notably "Opinion" and "show me your cards" the driving punkesque guitar riff of "last goodbye" will live long in the memory! for a debut album this is great but having my links to the band and having seen them live recently, i can only say watch out for the new record " A heartbeat behind" the songs are better, heavier and yet more melodic i cant wait! The release is May 9th (UK) and May 10th (USA) Buy this record! and when the new one arrives buy that too! Go on! You know you want to! Submitted by Dan (London UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Best band you've never heard of A great mix of punk/screamo/metal. I don't know who to compare them to because they're original, and it's hard to pick out one genre. I would definately recomend it...try downloading a few songs first, like This Piece, White Butterflies, or Last Goodbye. Submitted by me (here) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Drive By Monologue
$18.39 Having created a buzz in the British music press with the three singles '22 Grand Job', 'Strasbourg' & 'Work, Work, Work', London four piece The Rakes release their debut album Capture/Release. Produced by Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, The Futureheads, Maximo Park) the album sees the band taking inspiration from the likes of Joy Division and Wire, mixing angular guitar lines with punky, garage like rock. This pressing includes the bonus track 'All Too Human'. V2. 2006.
In case the listening public hadn't gotten their fill of U.K. bands from the 2000s (Bloc Party, the Futureheads, and Franz Ferdinand, among them) who built their sound on early-1980s post-punk and new wave, along came the Rakes in 2005 with CAPTURE/RELEASE. But while the ghosts of classic Clash and Gang of Four songs can be heard floating through the British quartet's debut, the Rakes aren't merely copy-cat Johnny Come Latelys. Instead the band's take on arty, punky, melody-heavy rock is fresh and invigorating. From the opening high-octane blast of "Strasbourg" through the bouncing rhythms and swirling riffs of "22 Grand Job" to the dub reggae of "Violent," the Rakes synthesize their influences beautifully, and evade accusations of being derivative by playing sharp songs with the wiry energy of a coiled spring. CAPTURE/RELEASE heralds the Rakes as a welcome addition to the post-punk revival bandwagon. Out of all the post-punk- and new wave-inspired bands coming out of the U.K. in the 2000s, the Rakes are the closest to straightforward, meat-and-potatoes punk. They set their tales of urban claustrophobia to alternately bouncy and angular rock that recalls the Clash and the paranoid sounds of the Stranglers, and also echo contemporaries like the Strokes and fellow Paul Epworth production clients Maxďmo Park and Bloc Party. Like these bands and their other peers, their relatively simple, direct sound acts as a platform for their personality and lyrics. The Rakes end ...
