Among white blues singers of the 1960s, there were some who studied the music so intently they amazed even the genre's creators with their technical mastery. A select few, however, seemed to be born oozing authenticity, sounding just as soulful as the greatest black bluesmen while forging a completely new sound. Johnny Winter belonged in the second category. A long-haired hippie albino, he astounded initially skeptical listeners with his Howlin' Wolf-like vocals and wild Johnny Guitar Watson-esque guitar stylings. THE WOODSTOCK EXPERIENCE showcases Winter's first taste of national exposure, first with his 1969 self-titled debut album, and then with his set at the Woodstock festival later the same year. The latter recording is the revelation here--a tornado of raging slide guitar and shouted vocals that sounds as if a late night Lone Star State roadhouse gig has been magically transported to the upstate New York farm. With several tracks clocking in at over 10 minutes ("Mean Town Blues," a hellacious Edgar Winter-led jam on "Tobacco Road"), the album showcases Johnny at his freest and most explosive.
Sony/BMG's Legacy imprint decided to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock by issuing a slew of double-disc deluxe packages by catalog artists who played the festival. Each slipcase contains the featured artist's entire performance at Woodstock and, as a bonus, an LP sleeve reproduction of a classic album issued near the time the festival occurred, as well as fine, individually, designed double-sided posters. Johnny Winter's volume in this series contains the remastered version of his self-titled debut album in a snazzy LP cover sleeve. It is one of, if not the greatest album in his entire catalog. More importantly, Johnny Winter's performance at Woodstock is, with the exception of one cut -- "Meantown Blues" -- the only one never to have been released in any form before now. This 64-minute, eight-song concert is an important historical document for numerous reasons, not the least of which is the absolutely killer show Winter and band put on. Winter appeared at the festival with his then-rhythm section of Tommy Shannon and "Uncle" John Turner (later to back Stevie Ray Vaughan in Double Trouble). Also appearing with the band on four cuts is Winter's brother Edgar on Hammond B-3. According to the liner notes what was to be played was unplanned, making for a stellar, unself-conscious public offering by an all but unknown artist to the Woodstock audience -- to be fair, there were two others at the time: Joe Cocker, and Crosby, Stills & Nash (with and without Neil Young). The set is divided between smoking originals -- an electric 12-string attack on "Meantown Blues" and a stomping "Leland Mississippi Blues," as well as well-chosen covers from his blues repertoire, including an electrifying version of J.B. Lenoir's "Mama, Talk to Your Daughter" to open the show. The version of B.B. King's "You Done Lost Your Good Thing" is the best cover version ever. The rhythm section here is so tight -- despite Winter's high-flying free-form improvisational attack. They are not only rocksteady, they help to control the dynamic and keep the show firmly on the ground. Of the material with Edgar, the reading of Bo Diddley's "I Can't Stand It," (which had recently been cut forQ (5/97, p.144) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...Winter's vocals rasp with a raw edge that matches his cranium-scooping guitar sound...Before the '70s, Winter was burrowing beneath some deep blues roots."
Down Beat (p.68) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "His lines, even the speediest and the wildest, have a sense of order. Back then, Winter could really sing, too..."

5 stars Breathtaking Red hot Rock Bluesman!!
The first time I heard "Be Careful with a Fool"-I had Goose bumps on my arms that ya couldn't take off with a hatchet!! The whole album remains his FINEST Masterpiece! It's as thrilling today-as it was in 1969! I wore out 2 LP's, 2-3 8-tracks, 2-3 cassettes-& am on my 3rd copy-on CD! Nuff said?? There wasn't a bad lick or tune on the album!!I bought many others too!I have continued to love Johnny & his Blues-all thru the yrs-& Saq him in Dallas about 2-3 yrs ago!! STILL GREAT !! (Even though his health looks bad)-He pulls it up-& ROCKS !!!One of the BEST EVER!!He influenced & HELPED my PLAYING IMMENSELY!!ROCK on JOHNNY!!

5 stars Great debut
One of Johnny's great albums! His first Columbia records were rather short, so the bonus tracks make it even more satisfying. Can't wait to hear the announced re-release of Second Winter with bonus tracks!

5 stars The real KING
His name is Winter, but his guitar (like his hair) is white hot! Granted - over the course of his career, Johnny's recorded output has been spotty at best, and his vocals in particular can be just plain terrible. But this recording is a must have for anyone with even a cursory interest in blues and the history of the electric guitar. Even though his name isn't spelled K-i-n-g, the CROWN belongs to Johnny.

For his umpteenth album, Married to the Game, the original player, Too Short, keeps on keeping on, spitting pimp game over well-produced tracks, never breaking a sweat. As with his past few albums -- What's My Favorite Word? (2002), Chase the Cat (2001), and You Nasty (2000) -- Married to the Game doesn't offer anything longtime (or relatively new) Too Short fans haven't heard before. Yet the well-produced tracks (by the usual roll call of impressive collaborators: Jazze Pha, Ant Banks, Lil Jon, and Dez) may be reason enough for many listeners to add yet another Too Short album to their collection. There are a few really good songs that get the album off to a promising start ("Choosin'," "What She Gonna Do?," and "That's How It Goes Down" especially), but by the time the hourlong album reaches its midway point, it's pretty clear Too Short is lounging yet again, content to stride along with his routine, never going out of his way to go above and beyond the call of duty. As a result, most listeners should stick with Too Short's golden age (1988-1993), when he did go above and beyond the call of duty, making some of the most creative (albeit sex-minded) rap the industry had yet produced. Regardless, no other rapper does it ...

Even if jazz was never endemic to one locale -- Harlem stride pianist Willie "The Lion" Smith once defiantly traced its origins to New Jersey -- there's no denying that this music has thrived in New York City ever since James P. Johnson came out with the Charleston and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band played Reisenweber's Café at West 58th Street and Columbus Circle. Released in 2007 on a hybrid Surround Sound Super Audio CD that is compatible with regular CD players, the Chesky label's Best of New York Sessions, Vol. 1 presents New York jazz as it sounds at the dawn of the new millennium. Some of it was recorded inside of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, ...
