Miles Davis - Live In Munich movie DVD
$15.29 Personnel: Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Neal Evans (Hammond b-3 organ); Toss Panos (drums). Audio Mixer: John Paterno. Photographer: George Wells. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." This is where Ford seamlessly combines rock, blues, jazz, and surf into a five-minute tour de force, leading one to believe that a vocal-free show might display his superb guitar talents even better. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, and first live CD in about a decade (although there have been some concert DVDs during that time), Ford is ...
| | Herbie Hancock Gershwin's World CD (1998) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid
Miles Davis - Live In Munich video
$15.49 GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s). This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Gershwin's World is a tour de force for Herbie Hancock, transcending genre and label, and ranking among the finest recordings of his lengthy career. Released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth, this disc features jazzman Hancock with a classy collection of special guests. The most surprising of Hancock's guest stars is Joni Mitchell, who delivers a gorgeously sensual vocal on "The Man I Love," then provides an airy, worldly take on "Summertime." On these two tracks, she shows she has come a long way from her folksinger beginnings to become a first-class jazz singer in her own right. Stevie Wonder's unmistakable harmonica complements Mitchell's singing on "Summertime" and shares lead instrument space with his own voice on the W.C. Handy classic "St. Louis Blues." Jazzman extraordinaire Wayne Shorter smokes a solo spot on Duke Ellington's "Cotton Tail" and carves out some space for his soprano saxophone in the midst of "Summertime." A number of the young lions of jazz are featured on various cuts, and Herbie's old pal Chick Corea joins the leader for a piano duet of James P. Johnson's "Blueberry ...
| | Ted Nash Mancini Project CD (2008)
Miles Davis - Live In Munich film
$13.65 Personnel: Ted Nash (alto flute, piccolo); Frank Kinbrough, Frank Kimbrough (piano); Rufus Reid (upright bass); Matt Wilson (drums). Recording information: Maggie's Farm, Buck's County, PA (12/18/2007/12/19/2007). One of the greatest movie composers is the late Henry Mancini, whose works adorn four decades' worth (from the '50s through the '80s) of good to great films. Jazz saxophonist Ted Nash, whose father Dick and uncle Ted frequently worked with Mancini, has now fashioned an exemplary tribute to him called, fittingly enough, THE MANCINI PROJECT. (While not strictly speaking a jazz composer, Mancini drew upon jazz for inspiration and featured several fine jazz soloists.) Here, the younger Nash has arranged 14 Mancini gems for small group, featuring his poised flute and fine, hearty, occasionally breathy tenor sax. Above all, Nash clearly loves the Hollywood composer's melodies, such as the sleek "Dreamsville" from PETER GUNN and the little heard "Two For The Road," and gives them respectful but also creative and exhilarating interpretations. No one can accuse Ted Nash of favoring an "all warhorses all the time" policy; in other words, he isn't the type of jazz instrumentalist who refuses to record anything that hasn't already been recorded by dozens of other artists. The saxophonist has interpreted his share of standards along the way, but on some of his albums he has recorded original material exclusively. The Mancini ...
