The most prolific serial killer in American history, John Wayne Gacy (Mark Holton) kept his secret by appearing as a model citizen in his suburban Chicago neighborhood--even going so far as to volunteer as a clown at a local hospital. But as other side became known, a nation watched in horror as 30 brutal murders were traced back to Gacy, and the bodies were discovered in the crawlspace under his home. GACY is a disturbing account of the sickening deeds of this real life monster.

$21.45 THE NOTEBOOK's Nick Cassavetes directs another tearjerking literary adaptation with this drama based on Jodi Picoult's novel. Cameron Diaz takes a detour from comedy to play Sara, the domineering mother of Kate (Sofia Vassilieva, MEDIUM), a young girl with cancer. Sara’s other daughter, 11-year-old Anna (Abigail Breslin), was conceived just to serve as a donor for her sick sister. On the outskirts of the family are father Brian (Jason Patric), who feels unable to stand up to his wife’s strength, and son Jesse (Evan Ellingson), who craves attention in the face of Kate’s illness. But the complicated situation gets more difficult when Anna hires a lawyer (played by the always excellent Alec Baldwin), so that she can control her own body and say "no" to giving a kidney to her sister.
Cassavetes and Picoult both traffic in tears, so MY SISTER’S KEEPER is a perfect match between director and source writer. Even the most jaded viewers will find it hard to keep their eyes dry in the face of this emotional family tragedy, so audiences are warned to have tissues parked next to their popcorn. This drama’s stellar cast also includes Thomas Dekker as Kate’s cancer-stricken love and Joan Cusack as the judge who presides over Anna’s case.

| | Murphy's Romance DVD (1985) Widescreen
Gacy review
$6.55 A charming, low-key romantic comedy, MURPHY'S ROMANCE is full of the small pleasures missing from other pictures of its genre. James Garner, in his first Oscar-nominated performance, is the title character, Murphy. Garner lends his unique, down-home persona to the character while the film's writers endow the character with some memorable lines. Murphy's romance begins when Emma (Field) arrives in the small Arizona town where he lives. With her she brings her son Jake, and a feisty attitude. Though this sounds like a set-up from any number of other film romances, it becomes clear from their first meeting that the director, Martin Ritt, is more interested in his carefully observed setting, and in the comic flirtations between Murphy and Emma flirtations, than in making a conventional picture. In fact, some of the film's strongest comic scenes occur when the locals show off their color, including a hilarious sequence during a bingo game that showcases the amazing support cast. Of course, there is some drama and confrontation, but the focus remains on the setting and the relationship between Murphy and Emma, whose lengthy romance is the clear mark of one of the most highly enjoyable movie courtships ever seen.

$10.49 A political murder mystery set in Nazi-occupied Poland and postwar Paris, NIGHT OF THE GENERALS follows a military investigator, General Grau (Omar Sharif), on his inquiry into a prostitute's murder that has unexpectedly led him to three prime suspects (Peter O'Toole, Donald Pleasence, and Charles Gray)--all generals in the German army. Two years after the murder in Warsaw, Grau is transferred to Paris, where he confronts the man he believes to be the murderer--who is busy framing one of the other generals for the crime. When Paris detective Inspector Morand (Philippe Noiret) gets involved, more than one plot is uncovered in this tense drama that parallels World War II's mass murder with the individual actions of its participants. Director Anatole Litvak's film is based on the best-selling novel by Hans Helmut Kirst.
