Darren McGavin stars as Kolchak in these two made for TV movies. The Night Stalker is a riveting mystery with a mixture of double-edged horror. The Night Strangler puts Kolchak on the trail of a murderer who's killed ever 21 years...for the past century! This double release contains two features starring Darren McGavin as Carl Kolchak, the crusading reporter whose mission it is to find out the scary truth behind supernaturally tinged crimes. These early 70's treats are direct ancestors to THE X-FILES.

Excellence on DVD "The Night Stalker" set viewing records when first aired as an "ABC Movie of the Week" more than 30 years ago, setting the stage for an enthusiastic viewer reception for the sequel, "The Night Strangler."
As stated by producer-director Dan Curtis (of prior "Dark Shadows" fame), both "The Night Stalker" and the "Night Strangler" have a timeless appeal due to their masterful utilization of story-telling...including the innovative, effective use of narration during both movies by star Darren McGavin as newspaper reporter Carl Kolchak.
Then there is the emerging chemistry between Kolchak (McGavin) and editor Vincenzo (Simon Oakland) that ultimately propelled this pilot movie concept into a successful prime-time series from 1974-1975.
Buy the DVD, sit back, view both sides, and "watch how it's done" by masters of the horror genre.
CAUTION: you may never be satisfied by a contemporary movie again after this experience. Submitted by vxr400 (St. John, IN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great TV Movies Darren McGavin was an under rated actor. He delivers top flight performances in both TV Movies on the DVD. Along with " The Outsider" the "Night Stalker" TV series was one of the most interesting shows on TV at the time. The shows on the DVD are a credit to Dan Curtis. Great !! Darren McGaven was perfect as Carl Kolchak the Investigative reporter who was always a pain in the neck to those who would try to keep the truth hidden. These two starter episodes for "The Nightstalker" series are a good start to what was a great series, I can't wait for the rest of the episodes to come out on DVD. The Kolchak character was well molded in these two starter episodes and left you wanting him to keep trying to find the truth behind the strange crimes that he encountered and to tell all about what he found out. I always asked, Whats next?
It was scary at times, funny at times, but most of all it was entertaining and had a good plot most of the time. When I first saw X-files, I thought Fox Mulder and Carl Kolchak could have been related, because they both had that attitude of getting to the facts behind the cover stories. A Stalk Down Memory Lane It's hard to imagine that these hugely popular telemovies were ever considered scary. Watching them 25+ years after their creation one can see the Kolchak formula already firmly in place. Darren McGavin is the smarmy loud mouthed ace reporter Kolchak. He might be thoroughly unconvincing, but who's watching him anyway? The views of 1970's Las Vegas and Seattle are the real stars of the show in what has become more of a time capsule than pair of movies. If its suspense you're after, you might enjoy the Muppets Christmas Carol - but if you'd like an entertaining though slightly bland walk down memory lane, this'll do the trick just fine. Night Stalker, The/Night Strangler film
$31.25 Derived from a medieval ballad, THE VIRGIN SPRING was director Ingmar Bergman's first film to win an Academy Award. The movie represents a return to simpler themes for Bergman after the philosophical complexity of THE SEVENTH SEAL and WILD STRAWBERRIES. On its most basic level, it's the story of violent crime violently avenged, but it can also be interpreted as a religious allegory on Christian forgiveness. A young girl, Karin (Birgitta Pettersson), is raped and killed by two herdsman on her way to church. Her foster sister, played by Gunnel Lindblom, witnesses the crime and reports back to Karin's parents (Max von Sydow and Birgitta Valberg) shortly ...
