This classic film was made during two days in 1968. Featured are performances by Jethro Tull, The Who, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, The Dirty Mac, Yoko One & Ivry Gitlis, John Lennon, and the Rolling Stones with appearances by Julius Katchen, clowns, trapeze artist, fire eater, and more. DVD features include PCM stereo, 5.1 Surround, English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, and German subtitles, and commentaries from the director and artists. Shot in 1968, this concert film (conceived and organized by Mick Jagger) was made in London over a two-day period. The show was literally set in a circus-like atmosphere, with the rock bands dressed in colorful costumes, and acrobats, clowns and other big-top acts performing between sets. The film captures such groups as the Rolling Stones and The Who at the height of their creativity, providing unforgettable entertainment for fans both young and old. Filmed as a British television special in December 1968 (which, incidentally, never aired), this good-natured circus hosted by the Rolling Stones features an all-star line-up of rock and roll greats, including Yoko Ono, mystical prog rockers Jethro Tull, Marianne Faithfull, and The Dirty Mac. Amidst the fire-eaters and acrobats, the show-stopping numbers include "Sympathy for the Devil," "No Expectations," "A Quick One (While He's Away)," and others. Shown at the 1996 New York Film Festival.
A Rolling Stones presentation.
Color by Technicolor UK.
Additional credits: Dave Ashley Smith (sound); Jimmy Miller (live recording producer); Glyn Johns (live recording engineer); Mick Gochanour (associate producer); Robin Klein (post-production producer and editor).
Shot in 16mm, and blown up to 35mm.
Although shot in 1968, the film was reportedly never released because The Rolling Stones were unhappy with their performance, and feared that The Who upstaged them. The Stones' plan to re-film their performance was halted by the death of group member Brian Jones.
Songs include:
"Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Parachute Woman,"
"You Can't Always Get What You Want,"
"Sympathy for the Devil" and "Salt of the Earth"
performed by The Rolling Stones.
"A Quick One While He's Away" performed by The Who.
"Song for Jeffrey" performed by Jethro Tull.
"Ain't That a Whole Lot of Love" performed by Taj Mahal.
"Something Better" performed by Marianne Faithfull.
"Whole Lotta Yoko" performed by Yoko Ono.
"Yer Blues" performed by Dirty Mac (comprised of John
Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Mitch
Mitchell). Rolling Stones - Rock And Roll Circus Reviews: "...Uncommonly great....Intimate and exceptional performances..." -- Rating: A
-- Ira Robbins, Entertainment Weekly "...Heady with late-'60s atmosphere and electrifying moments from musical luminaries at their creative peaks..."-- Godfrey Cheshire, Variety "There is not a bad moment in THE ROLLING STONES ROCK AND ROLL CIRCUS. The performances by the Who and Dirty Mac are spectacular..."
-- Jae-Ha Kim, Chicago Sun-Times "The entire cast wears circus garb that looks left over from The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper cover, and there's a transcendent moment when Mick Jagger and John Lennon get silly with each other."-- Mike Clark, USA Today "[T]he Stones' performance stands up well alongside their guests..."
-- Mojo Staff, Mojo Rolling Stones - Rock And Roll Circus Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews circus peanuts For any rock-n-roll historian type this is a must have. The Who at their best...Jethro Tull in all its manic lunacy...great set by Taj Mahal and where else ya gonna see John Lennon doing Yer Blues - with Eric Clapton and Keith Richards playing alongside! Talk about a super-group! Although I have seen the Stones do Sympathy for the Devil on stage it does not compare to what Mick does with it on this DVD. Mick IS the devil and he proves it here. Plus, I was touched by the genuine friendship displayed between Mick Jagger and John Lennon. Pete Townshend offers an insightful narrative, even if it is a bit long and kinda gay. If you look long and "hard" at Marianne Faithful and remember what she finally did to herself you'll never do hard drugs again. Get this DVD. It may be nothing but history now, but it is also an intimate view from the top in rock-n-roll. Submitted by Mister Mike (columbus ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Headliners Upstaged by Opening Acts This is a wonderful documentation of the late 60's in England and a thriving music scene; so good a scene that the Stones are a let down by the end of the performance. Jethro Tull is wonderful as is the Who, Taj Mahal and even Marianne Faithful. The Highlight of this for me is the performance of Yer Blues by The Dirty Mac with John Lennon (v,g), Eric Clapton (lg) Keith Richards (bs)and Mitch Mitchell (dr). The Stones were OK but you get to see why they were contemplating replacing Brian Jones. Funny little side bar in the commentaries tells how Jethro Tull was picked over Led Zeppelin as the unknown opener.
The Mix is good, only limited by the quality of the original recordings.

The Rock-N-Roll Circus The times were on full throttle, it was when music had really changed the world. The Beatles were coming to an end and it was ever so obvious with the presence of Yoko the bird caller..
The Who had become a force of nature.
Taj Mahall couldn’t hit a bad note.
Jethro Tull was a act like no other.
The Rolling Stones were leaving their fantastic beginning behind and entering a phase that would begin the greatest music ever heard.
Brian Jones was in attendance at the circus, he was hit and miss by this stage of his career, Keith Richards was on fire, Bill Wyman just wanted to jam all night, Charlie Watts was and still is the engine and driving force behind it all. Mick Jagger has got to be the front man of all times and it shows at the circus..
Great trip back in time this movie was, God save the queen.

bout time A gem, nearly lost when the stones hesitated to put this out.The only flaw in the stone is Yoko, but we know where John is Yoko is.A young Clapton at top form jammin with John.Tull on one leg.Kieth bangin the skins like only he can.Petes nose bigger than ever just like his guitar licks.
Taj Mahal sounded good as gets.....And the Stones young and hungry....Nuff said Submitted by kim (ofallon mo) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
