This classic film, based on the serialized story in Collier's magazine by Jack Finney, is set in idyllic small-town America, where a strange, alien form of plant life sprouts pods that destroy the human personality while taking over the body. And only one man can stop them...if they don't stop him first.

Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally well written and directed fable, the ultimate comment on the subtly coercive conformity of the 1950s, may be Siegel's best film, and it is undoubtedly one of the most exciting science fiction films ever made.

Theatrical release: February 6, 1956. Shooting location: Sierra Madre and Beechwood Hills, CA. INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1994. Sam Peckinpah served as dialogue director for this film, as well as playing the small role of the meter reader. Don Siegel described his purpose in making the film: "I think so many people have no feeling about cultural things, no feeling of pain, of sorrow. I wanted to get it over and I didn't know of a better way to get it over than in this particular film." The special effects budget was less than $15,000. This well-reviewed and popular film has been remade twice; in 1978 by director Philip Kaufman, in which original director Don Siegel and star Kevin McCarthy had cameos, and in 1993 by Abel Ferrara. Jack Finney's serialized story "The Body Snatchers" was later published as a novel, called (like the film) INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Richard Deacon, who later starred as Mel Cooley on THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, has a small role in the film.

5 stars The Best SF Movie Ever Made
By Best I mean, of course, my favorite science fiction movie. This was directed by Don Siegel (who also directed "Dirty Harry," among others!) and if you look quickly you can catch a glimpse of San Peckinpah as the parking inspector. And, yes, he's the same Sam Peckinpah who wen on to direct "The Wild Bunch" and "Ride the High Country." This is a classic SF movie that works in spite of a an almost complete lack of special effects and a studio imposed ending that was a little softer and more hopeful than the writer and director intended. A paranoid classic.

5 stars How do you improve on the masters?
If someone wants to redraw my daughters finger painting, fine, but don't mess with the masters! Update, OK, but improve? The new version has fine actors and acting, but why Hollywoodize the ending? Just to be different? This one is great, picture & sound. I think it has one illogical flaw, but so does the new one! A must see!

5 stars The PODS grew up!
I saw this movie when I was eight years old. I'm surprised my dad took me, but he was a Sci-Fi fan just like me! Forbidden Planet, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Thing, and Body Snatchers are ALL masterpieces not to be duplicated. Younger viewers who have haven't had the pleasure of seeing a truly suspenceful, scary movie WITHOUT outlandish special effects MUST see this film. I live not far from Sierra Madre. Everytime I drive to that lovely little city.... I roll up my windows....and watch people VERY closely!

5 stars Highly Recommended...a true classic
This is one of my favorites and in my opinion, a contender for the number one classic of this period and genre. Interestingly, there is very little in the way of special effects (just some rubber seed pods and mannequins). All of the insidious malevolence is developed by dialog, body language and music. The cast is excellent...period. I am always particularly saddened when Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) is taken over by the alien force, because she will never again be a loving woman and because she is so damn pretty (what a loss). Also, the battle against falling asleep waged by Kevin McCarthy adds a very unique dimension to this struggle. The movie then concludes with unique and truly memorable ending.

5 stars Sci-Fi Classic
This movie scared the hell out of me when I saw it at the movies in 1956. It is still scary today. Kevin McCarthy's signature role. Don't watch this movie alone! Highly recommended.

Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., ...

Steven Soderbergh followed up his critical and commercial smash ERIN BROCKOVICH with this wildly exhilarating exploration of the complex, multilayered international drug problem. The film tells three seemingly disparate stories that loosely intersect and overlap, unfurling at a frantic, relentless pace. In the first, a well-intentioned Mexican police officer, Javier Rodriguez Rodriguez (Benicio Del Toro), comes face-to-face with the hypocrisy and hopelessness of his situation after he learns that his superior, General ...
