Warren Oates, Lee Grant, Sidney Poitier, Beah Richards, Rod Steiger, William Schallert - Dir:Norman Jewison The winner of the 1967 Oscar for Best Picture, "In the Heat of the Night" is set in a small Mississippi town where an unusual murder has been committed. Rod Steiger plays sheriff Bill Gillespie, a good lawman despite his racial prejudices. When Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), a well-dressed African-American and Philadelphia police detective, comes to town, the two must betray culturally dictated perceptions of the other to grudgingly work together to solve the case. While on a trip back home in Mississippi, detective Virgil Tibbs is arrested for the murder of a prominent industrialist. His only crimes: being out late at night and being black. After some prodding by his boss, Tibbs joins forces with the bigoted town sheriff to catch the real killer. Norman Jewison helms this Best Picture winner about a black Philadelphia detective (Sidney Poitier) who becomes involved in a murder case in a small, bigoted southern town, much to the chagrin of the local redneck police chief (Rod Steiger). An excellent production, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT was adapted by Stirling Silliphant from John Ball's novel. The drama boasts seven Academy Award nominations and five statuettes, including Best Picture, Best Actor--Rod Steiger, and Best (Adapted) Screenplay. Academy Award for Best Sound to the Goldwyn Sound Department. In The Heat Of The Night Reviews: "...At the height of the civil rights era, it was volcanic..."

In The Heat Of The Night Video In The Heat Of The Night Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) The story and Poiter are Phenomenal Loaded with racism, ignorance, mystery, injustice and a REAL "feel good" ending, this movie is sure to go down in history as an honest attempt at showing prejudice and hopefully an honorable attempt at bringing change.
Poiter was gallant, humble, intelligent and gentle without being subservient...One of his greatest roles. Steiger was amazing and powerful.... sure to be his best role also. Submitted by Becky (Weatherford, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
My Favoirite From Poiter! Excellent performances by both Poiter and Steiger. I was only 3 or 4 years old when this movie was released and I think it is a collectors item. Music also scored by Quincy Jones. Submitted by percyjohnson28269 (Charlotte NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
one of the great classics this movie could have been filmed today and touched many nerves around the world
in the politically correct millenium this movie portrays a far too standard myopic view of the day
everyone should see this movie Submitted by mdkwolfe (southern,NH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

$23.39 Ingmar Bergman's acclaimed drama, which deals with the fractured relationships between three sisters, is set in a vast turn-of-the-century manor house where unidentified voices are continually whispering and mingle with a dying woman's cries of pain. Karin and Maria (played by Ingrid Thulin and Liv Ullmann, respectively) have come to stay with their sister Agnes (Harriet Andersson), who is suffering from cancer, during the final stretch of her illness. Attending to Agnes is her faithful maid Anna (Kari Sylwan), who, in spite of her apparent social inferiority, is the only one who remains steadfast and dauntless until the very end--the two other women, plagued by guilt, loneliness, and jealousy of one another, are unable to offer assistance or even sympathy in their sister's hour of need. Lauded often for its innovative stylistic elements (such as flashbacks introduced by a fade to red--a color that dominates the picture as a whole--and extreme, expressive close-ups of the actresses' faces), CRIES AND WHISPERS ...

$7.89 Around the world, between 20,000 and 50,000 people are kidnapped each year. In Taylor Hackford's suspense-filled adventure film, American businessman Peter Bowman (David Morse) is traveling in a Latin American country when a group of criminals take him as their hostage and hold him for ransom. The megacorporation he works for sends in an expert hostage negotiator, Terry Thorne (Russell Crowe), to settle on a ransom with the kidnappers, an antigovernment faction. Thorne earns the reluctant trust of Bowman's wife, Alice (Meg Ryan), and begins trying to win Bowman's freedom, but conflict with Bowman's employers, missteps with the kidnappers, and Thorne's growing attraction to Alice threaten to derail his efforts. Crowe and Ryan are excellent as thrown-together allies under pressure, and Morse's descent from collected businessman to desperate hostage anchors the film. Watch for former NYPD BLUE ...
