This Gothic melodrama, adapted from the novel by Valerie Martin, depicts the infamous tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the perspective of Dr. Jekyll's naive housemaid, a poor servant girl from gloomy Edinburgh named Mary Reilly (Julia Roberts). Having suffered an emotionally and physically wrenching childhood at the hands of her cruel father, Mary grew up with a dichotomous view of men. It is then fitting that the adult Mary becomes a housekeeper for one Dr. Jekyll (John Malkovich). Slowly, the reserved woman begins to open up to him emotionally, and the two become close. However, as Mary begins to innocently spy on the well respected doctor, she soon discovers strange secrets about his personality, including nightly outings to a seedy bordello run by a vicious madam (Glenn Close). When Jekyll's assistant, Hyde, begins working at the mansion, Mary becomes attracted to him, for he is younger, stronger and more virile than Jekyll. Amidst the ominous walls of the doctor's foreboding home, Mary is forced to realize the truth about her employer and his seductive "assistant."

In this moody and melodramatic revision of the classic horror tale, based on the novel by Valerie Martin, the Jekyll and Hyde saga is told from the point of view of the doctor's long-time maid, Mary Reilly (Julia Roberts). Despite Mary's close collaboration with the staid Dr. Jekyll (John Malkovich) and her fascination with his charming "assistant" Hyde, she is unable to realize their true nature until too late.

Theatrical release: February 23, 1996. The film reunites John Malkovich, Glenn Close, director Stephen Frears, and screenwriter Christopher Hampton from DANGEROUS LIASONS.

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

4 stars Just a great movie.
In one of the few roles that I doesn't make me sick, Julia Roberts' portrail of a humble servant to an eccentric scientist is absolutely fantastic. John Malkovich is a brilliant actor, and doesn't fail to deliver here. The movie being centered around and viewed through the eyes of Mary Reilly was a refreshing take on this age old story.

The grisly and debauched film PATHOLOGY is a juiced-up medical thriller that plays like FLATLINERS with a mean streak and a broken moral compass. Writers Mark Nelvedine and Brian Taylor have created a premise allowing for CSI-like forensics along with heaps of sex and violence, truly making the most of the film's R-rating. A high-end exploitation film with good performances, PATHOLOGY is strong enough for horror fans and should go down smoothly for non-squeamish viewers with a taste for the dark side. Gifted med student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia, HEROES) arrives at a major Washington, D.C., as an intern, where he is met with suspicion and resentment by the tightly knit group of fellow young pathologists-in-training. Soon, though, Ted is accepted into their circle---where they each take turns committing a murder so that the others may prove their mettle by figuring out the cause of death and celebrate with drug-fueled orgies among the dead bodies in the hospital. Things change for Ted, though, when his law student fiancée, Gwen (Alyssa Milano), moves to the city and helps to scare him straight. Soon, crazed Wallace Stevens-quoting leader Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) turns on Ted, putting both Ted's and Gwen's lives in serious jeopardy. The film opens with the Hippocratic Oath, and it's easy to tell that PATHOLOGY is going to show us doctors behaving badly, and the film is in fact almost gleefully immoral, with an attractive young cast ...

Marcel Langenegger makes his feature-film directorial debut with the aptly titled DECEPTION, a film about secrets and lies. Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) feels that life is passing him by. He completes short-term audits for a large firm, but doesn't really feel any connection to his employer and finds it difficult to make friends at his assignments since he's never there for long. Jonathan's circumstances change overnight when charming lawyer Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman) befriends him. In an instant, the shy accountant is playing doubles tennis with his new friend and beautiful women and visiting upscale clubs. Just as mild-mannered Jonathan is getting used to his new lifestyle, Wyatt leaves town on business. When Jonathan finds himself mistakenly in possession of Wyatt's cell phone, he also discovers a whole new world of anonymous sex in elite Manhattan hotels with powerful women known simply as "The List." But soon Jonathan is in over his head: he's the prime suspect when a woman goes missing, and the threat of extortion looms. This tale weaves an intricate web of lies and treachery. Jackman is both charming ...

In one of his most memorable roles, Steve McQueen stars as Detective Frank Bullitt, a hard-driving, tough-as-nails San Francisco cop. Bullitt has just received what sounds like a routine assignment: keep a star witness out of sight and out of danger for 48 hours, then deliver him to the courtroom on Monday morning. But before the night is out, the witness will lie dying of shotgun wounds, and Bullitt, a no-glitter, all-guts cop, won't rest until he nabs the gunmen and the elusive underworld kingpin who hired them. From opening shot to closing shootout, Peter Yates's edge-of-the seat thriller is packed with authentic touches, from on-location San Francisco ...
