$15.69 Blake Edwards tones down the broadly farcical style that is his signature with this sly musical comedy starring Julie Andrews as British entertainer Victoria Grant. She and an older friend, gay impresario Toddy (Robert Preston), are close to starvation in 1930s Paris. Desperate for work, he changes her image, introducing her to the cabaret world as Polish female impersonator Victor/Victoria. Victoria, now a woman pretending to be a man in drag, becomes a huge success in the nightclub world. Chicago gangster King Marchan (James Garner) becomes especially intrigued by Victor/Victoria while visiting Paris with his dim-witted girlfriend, Norma (Lesley Anne Warren), and his ever-faithful bodyguard, Squash (Alex Karras), who's more than a little concerned by his boss's interest in a transvestite. As Marchan tries to get to the source of his attraction to the entertainer, trying to uncover the truth behind the rhinestone headdress, the farce commences, and the meaning of gender and sexual preference comes into question for all the characters. A director who often shows a willingness to let the seams in his work show for comic effect, Edwards has opted for stylish smoothness here while opening himself to questions of gender that his earlier films had anxiously mocked. Robert Preston steals the film as Victoria's ...

Wiz film
$13.69 Original Cast Recording: Scott Porter, Tyler Maynard, Andy Karl, Ryan Duncan, David Josefsberg (vocals). Personnel: David Anthony Matos (guitar); Clayton Craddock (drums). Additional personnel: Lynne Shankel (keyboards); Doug Katsaros (programming); David Anthony Matos, Clayton Craddock. Audio Mixer: Jonathan Kaplan. Recording information: Sound On Sound Studio A, New York, NY. Photographers: Chris Cassidy; Nick Ruechel; Carol Rosegg. The peak of the so-called boy band craze in pop music came in about the year 2000; by 2002, the fashion was over. Altar Boyz, a musical about a boy band, arrived off-Broadway on March 1, 2005, which may be as close to currency as the musical theater gets. But there is nothing as out as that which was recently in, and the show plays as a period piece no less than Forever Plaid, another off-Broadway musical about a male vocal group. And similar to Forever Plaid, Altar Boyz is intended as a lightly satiric, yet affectionate take on its subject. The big joke here is that the fictional Altar Boyz are a group of Catholics -- Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Juan (and, oh, yes, Abraham, who, for reasons never really explained, is Jewish) -- and they are here to sing about their faith. They do so in the combination of dance, Latin, and ballad styles, complete with overly emotive harmony and solo singing, that will be familiar to anyone who's ever heard a Backstreet Boys album. Songwriters Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker clearly have their tongues in their cheeks. "Church Rulez" is an account of what the Catholic Mass is like, with its constant cycle of standing, sitting, and kneeling. ...

$10.35 In FUNNY GIRL, the highly fictionalized musical biopic, Barbara Streisand makes her film debut in a reprisal of her Broadway role as Ziegfeld star Fanny Brice. Brice, a poor Jewish girl from New York's Lower East Side, rose to fame and won audience's hearts everywhere with her comic antics and powerful singing. Unfortunately, she had far less success in her personal life, and the film focuses on her doomed romance with her first husband, gambler Nicky Arnstein.
One of the most popular movie musicals ever made, "Funny Girl" follows the early career of stage comedienne Fanny Brice, a role that earned Barbra Streisand the 1968 Oscar for Best Actress. As the film opens, only her mother believes Fanny can make it in show business. When she gets her first break at Keeney's Music Hall, her hilarious debut as a roller-skating chorus girl gets her hired as a comedienne. A year ...

$9.79 Writer-director Alice Wu's debut film is a heartwarming and heartbreaking romantic comedy about family, tradition, and changing times. Michelle Krusiec gives an outstanding performance as Wilhelmina, a doctor in a Manhattan hospital who returns to Flushing's Chinatown every Friday night to participate in her extended family's weekly dance mixer. While her mother (TWIN PEAKS's Joan Chen) and the other women try to set her up with eligible bachelors, Wil falls for Vivian (Lynn Chen), a beautiful young dancer who feels the attraction as well. As the two women contemplate a possible relationship, Wil's mother, who is nearing fifty, reveals she is pregnant, but she will not tell anyone who the father is. Wil's grandfather (Jin Wang) disowns his daughter for the shame she is bringing the family--he feels he has "lost face" in the community--forcing Wil to take in her mother and care for her in a reversal of generational roles and responsibility. But just as her mother remains secretive of who the father of her baby is, Wil keeps her lesbianism a secret as well. SAVING FACE, which played the Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals, is an endearing film, with likable characters in unique, believable situations that are both funny and moving. Krusiec and Lynn Chen are a charming couple, and Joan Chen is stoically wonderful as an Asian-American woman representing the bridge between the old traditions and the new Chinese youth culture. The soundtrack features a pair of songs by Marc Anthony Thompson, aka Chocolate Genius, as well as Cat Power and Leona Naess.
When a young woman's pregnant unmarried ...
