Closed Captioned; Additional Footage; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Director's Comments A wild, unpredictable and witty sci-fi comedy in which the survival of the entire human race hinges on the efforts of one man--Buckaroo Banzai. Buckaroo (Peter Weller) possesses an unusual number of professional skills--he's a neurosurgeon, race car driver, rock star, and comic book hero. While testing his jet-propelled Ford Fiesta, he drives through a rock, accidentally unleashing alien criminals from another planet who were imprisoned there. Suddenly, "Earth saver" seems destined to be added to Buckaroo's list of occupations, but not if evil Dr. Emilio Lizardo (John Lithgow) has his way. Less than successful in its 1984 theatrical run, W.D. Richter's wild, anything-goes sci-fi comic book comedy has developed a rabid cult of admirers in the ensuing years. Though the ending of the film promised a sequel, financing problems halted its production. Richter's screenplay for the follow-up film was reworked and later became John Carpenter's BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Reviews: "...It's a lunatic ball, an extremely genial, witty example of what is becoming a movie genre all its own....Hard to top for pure, nutty fun."
-- Vincent Canby, New York Times "...Very funny....[Lithgow] gives one of the most controlled out-of-control performances on screen in recent years..."

Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A Smart Science Fiction Adventure This is one of my all-time favorite films, and one that was very influential on my later adult life, as I first saw it while in high school. The idea of a hard-rocking, world-saving brain surgeon/particle physicist and his gang of equally brilliant and daring cohorts appealed to me greatly; we should all strive to be such "Renaissance Persons". The fact that the film style doesn't explain a whole lot about anything, makes no apologies about the seeming lack of information or plot, is skillfully deceptive...one must actually pay attention to the film in order to figure out what's going on. In actuality the far-out science of the Oscillation Overthruster is quite possible; however esoteric, we just haven't gotten around to working up the proper equations yet.
I like this film because it doesn't talk down to its audience, and it doesn't spoon-feed them. I think the makers of this film made it for the small percentage of the American public that actually still uses their brains. Besides that, it's hopelessly cheesy and low-budget, and exudes a sort of honesty that is very rare these days.

It gets better with each viewing. This has been a favorite of mine for many years. I seem to find someting new with each viewing. The extras on the DVD are great too. It's great to look at this movie 18 years later and see the beginings of many of today's most recognized personalities. What a joy.
We can only hope that the Banzai Institute and D.W. Richter have the opportuniy to produce a second film. It would be great to see the Hong Kong Caviliers in action again.

Wierd but wonderful Buckaroo Banzai is a strange film.
You can't really explain the plot, the ending doesn't conclude the story adequately.
But it's so much fun!
This DVD takes the unusual line of suggesting that the movies was actually a docu-drama based on the real life exploits of Buckaroo Banzai with a documentary included that shows "declassified information" rather than behind the scenes footage.
A true cult classic and an essential purchase Submitted by a reviewer (Glasgow, Scotland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
More than a cult classic We adults liked Buckaroo when it came out so I ordered the DVD for our kids. They love it and so do their friends. It's fresh and fast paced enough for preteens and holds the attention of the younger ones too. Too bad the other planned adventures were never filmed!!
