The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle époque Paris with magical realism. Moulin Rouge Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars)   this movie is so bad ....
I bought this movie for $10 thinking that it can't be all that bad if it stars Ewan McGregor. I watched the first 40 minutes of the show and had to turn off the DVD player. I put the DVD back in its case and threw it in the garbage. It was really that bad. I thought this was going to be a serious drama that explored the life and times of the Moulin Rouge in the 1890's. A serious endeavor would have given Ewan a more respectable role that would have allowed him to showcase his real talents as an actor. Instead, this turned out to be a caricature of a film. I would say the humor in this movie would appeal to a 10-year old. It's silly, ridiculous and non-ending. Also, there is sexual humor and innuendo as well which only lowers the film even further and would be inappropriate for children anyway despite its PG13 rating. If you are a respectable, mature and intelligent person, you will find this film to be a waste of time. Next time, I won't buy a movie without having seen it first.

It was the most wonderful movie i've ever seen!! Everything is so magic.. Moulin Rouge express all the feelings we can feel. "Why does my heart cry feelings i can't fight?"

Great from beginning to end
Absolutely marvelous. I enjoyed every moment of this movie. Fantastic music, wonderful actors, great story. I can't get enough of it. It was worth much more than I paid. Thanks!

It took me a few times of watching this movie to really enjoy it, I had a hard time of the incorporation of modern music to old themes but I have since come around to really appreciate Baz's vision.

From Wes Anderson, director of RUSHMORE, this film is full of quirky comedy that will have audiences reeling and reflecting simultaneously. The brilliant script is impeccable with choppy, intentionally awkward language delivered with dry wit by the well-appointed (almost too good to be true) cast. Dramatic sets are emphasized by the film's masterful orchestration of scene changes and chapter separations. The photography beautifully captures a faded, vintage 1980s New York. And the eclectic soundtrack features much-loved tunes by Nico, The Velvet Underground, The Clash, and the Vince Guaraldi Trio.
