Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles; Director's Comments Ex-journalist Michael Moore's blistering, satirical documentary about the closing of the General Motors plants in Flint, Michigan in the mid-1980s. This move, which eliminated 33,000 jobs and left the one-industry town destitute, was a particularly bitter tragedy, considering that Flint was the town that gave birth to General Motors during post-war boom era of the 1950s. The film revolves around Moore's dogged attempts to gain an interview with Roger Smith, the elusive and well-insulated head of GM and the man responsible for the layoffs. While tracking the eponymous Roger, Moore takes time out to record the devastation of Flint and the desperate, often unintentionally hilarious attempts of the citizens and the city fathers to deal with the catastrophe. A personal and comical account of the tough times of Moore's hometown of Flint, Michigan, the birthplace of General Motors. When GM closed several plants, 35,000 of the 150,000 residents lost their jobs. Also known by the title: "Roger and Me: A Humorous Look at How General Motors Destroyed Flint, Michigan."
Filmed on location in Flint and Detroit, Michigan, in 16mm.
Released in Flint, Michigan December 19, 1989; released in New York City and Los Angeles December 20, 1989. Released on video June 20, 1990.
Shown at the 1989 Toronto Festival of Festival September 9 & 11; the Independent Feature Film Market (IFFM) in New York City October 7, 9, & 15; the Greater Fort Lauderdale Film Festival October 28; the London Film Festival in November; the United States Film Festival, Park City, Utah January 20-28; the Berlin Film Festival in February, and the New York Film Festival. The film also showed on PBS, along with a brief sequel, "Pets or Food?"
Winner of the 1989 New York Film Critics Award for Best Documentary.
Personalities featured in the movie included head of General Motors Roger Smith, ex-president Ronald Reagan, Deputy Fred Ross, Rhonda Britto (the "Bunny Lady"), Flint Tourism Chief Steve Wilson, and the now-former Miss America Kaye Lani Rae Rafko (who represented Michigan in the pageant).
Michael Moore is a former journalist for the left-wing San Francisco publication "Mother Jones." This was his first film.
Warner Bros. bought "Roger and Me" for an estimated $3 million. $25,000 of it went to families in Flint left homeless by the closing of General Motors.
"Roger and Me" opened to great critical and popular acclaim. Soon after its release, however, the documentary came under fire when director Michael Moore admitted that he had rearranged the chronology of events for his own narrative purposes. Many people considered this an unethical bending of the truth that they felt a documentary should represent.

Roger & Me Movie Review Good, but Bowling much better Unfortunately we saw Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore's most recent film, before Roger & Me. Bowling was outstanding and created a high expectation that Roger & Me didn't live up to. Nonetheless, it was well done and worth seeing. Moore has an amazing way of using humor to spotlight very serious topics. Roger & Me raised a number of compelling questions about the balance between corporate shareholder value and social responsibility. The movie dragged a bit in places, but still entertains while getting its important message across. Submitted by larry757 (Los Altos, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Even Better This Time I saw this years ago, decided to buy
it, and it was even better this time.
The plot is Moore is trying to find
Roger Smith who was the CEO who shut
down the GMC plant in Flint, MI to open
plants in Mexico where the labor is
cheaper.
It destroyed the city of Flint. The
city went through all the usual moves
to keep from going down the drain. You
know the drill. They built a Factory
Museum, got a new Hyatt Hotel for a
convention center, built a mall or
two... But nothing worked and Flint was
flushed down the hole anyway...
So Moore spends all of his time trying
to find Smith so he can interview him
while showing us the wreckage and
misery he caused.
It was a funny, sad, bittersweet
movie. One couldn't help but wonder how
a movie like that would be if it were
made today. Remember,this movie took
place just at the beginning of all
the out-sourcing we enjoy today. We
hadn't even started to think of
China, Korea, Bangladesh et al.
Moore never did find Smith, but I
hope he saw the movie..... Submitted by Sam (Savannah,GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Funniest Revenge comedy ever... Who ever thought you would see a documentary about human suffering that could be soooo funny. If you enjoy revenge, you will love the way Micheal Moore twists the knife in the back of GM after It abandons 30,000 American workers in a small town that was practically built for - and that completely depends on - General Motors for its survival. $11.35 Comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham hits the stage with hilarious new pals Achmed the Dead Terrorist and Melvin the Super hero, as well as old favorites Peanut, Walter, and Jose Jalapeno, in this sidesplitting performance at Washington D.C.'s Warner Theater.
More than just a stand-up comic, Jeff Dunham is a one-man comedy troupe--a ring-leader in a circus of snark. The veteran ventriloquist may be the only one with vocal chords, but he’s often the least vocal, playing straight man to a steam trunk of personalities: Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a goofball skeleton still fighting the infidels; Peanut, an odd purple creature with a fast mouth; Jose ...
