Talkies were well entrenched when Charles Chaplin swam against the filmmaking tide with this forever classic that's silent except for music and sound effects. The story, involving the Tramp's attempts to get money for an operation that will restore sight to a blind flower girl, provides the star with an ideal framework for sentiment and laughs. The Tramp is variously a street sweeper, a boxer, a rich poseur, and a rescuer of a suicidal millionaire. His message is unspoken, but universally understood: love is blind This Charlie Chaplin masterpiece tells a bittersweet tale about a blind girl who is restored to sight with the help of that quintessential urban misfit, the Tramp, who falls in love with her. One of Chaplin's best. CITY LIGHTS was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1991. City Lights Reviews: "If only one of Charlie Chaplin's films could be preserved, CITY LIGHTS would come the closest to representing different notes of his genius..."
-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "CITY LIGHTS opens with one of the funniest scenes in Charlie Chaplin's career and ends with his most sublime..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...One of cinema's all-time weepers....Hilarious but also poignant..."
-- Susan King, Los Angeles Times "Chaplin's greatest picture..."
-- Glenn Kenny, Premiere

City Lights Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A Masterpiece "City Lights" is a wonderful film. Watching it, you forget what a jerk Chaplin was in real life, and fall into a revery while watching it. Chaplin worked outside the studio system, and therefore had the luxury of working at his own pace. This meant long months of shooting, which led to him and co-star Virginia Cherrill not getting along. In fact, at one point, he fired her, only to rehire her when he realized that the film was too far along to reshoot all of her scenes. As for the final scene, I always tear up, not matter how many times I've seen it. It is truly one of greatest films ever made. Submitted by twi-zon (Springfield, MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Ednita Nazario - Acustico DVD (2004)
City Lights review
$11.19 Known for her melding of traditional Latin styles with an American pop edge, Ednita Nazario has risen to fame in many Spanish-speaking countries. She first entered the public eye aged 7, when she commanded her own television show in her native Puerto Rico. A subsequent recording career confirmed her place in the hearts of thousands of fans, and she has released numerous best-selling albums. This release sees her parring down her sound to an acoustic setting, proving that her songs have a rare depth to them. Her vocal inflexions prove mesmerizing in this format, and Nazario proves that she has the versatility, charisma, and charm to pull off a bold venture such as this. | | Upside Of Anger DVD (2005) Widescreen; Subtitled; DTS Sound
City Lights DVD
$7.95 Starring Joan Allen, THE UPSIDE OF ANGER spans three years of a woman's life following her husband's sudden disappearance. Terry Wolfmeyer (Allen), an affluent suburban Detroit wife and mother, goes from a paragon of sweetness to a volcano of rage in the wake of her husband's desertion; she thinks he has jetted off to Sweden with his Swedish secretary. Barely holding it together for her four daughters (distinctively played by Alicia Witt, Keri Russell, Erika Christensen, and Evan Rachel Wood), Terry fitfully adjusts while befriending Denny Davies (Costner), a retired baseball player and radio personality up the street who shares her love of the all-day cocktail hour.
Allen is a delightful force, displaying serious comedic talent and effortlessly stealing each scene. She glows with an unaffected sexiness, while Costner shines as the seemingly all-wrong man who turns out to be completely right. Writer-director Mike Binder casts a keenly perceptive eye on male-female relationships, a topic he also explored in his critically-acclaimed HBO series THE MIND OF THE MARRIED MAN. Binder also appears in a role as Denny's producer Shep, a shallow womanizer with surprisingly resonant reasons for being shallow. As the three years pass, Terry and her daughters are confronted with varying individual situations, choices, and compromises, with moments that ring true in ways both moving and strikingly funny. THE UPSIDE OF ANGER is an ideal combination of drama and humor.
A touching yet humorous film about a woman who finds her and her daughters' lives changed by a former baseball star who steps into her life as her drinking buddy. Actors: Kevin Costner, Alicia Witt, Erika Christensen, Evan Rachel Wood, Joan Allen, Keri Russell.
