Kiss: Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums).
Recorded at The Record Plant, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Robert V. Conte.
Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
The pressure was on Kiss for their fifth release, and the band knew it. Their breakthrough, Alive!, was going to be hard to top, so instead of trying to recreate a concert setting in the studio, they went the opposite route. Destroyer is one of Kiss' most experimental studio albums, but also one of their strongest and most interesting. Alice Cooper/Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin was on hand, and he strongly encouraged the band to experiment -- there's extensive use of sound effects (the album's untitled closing track), the appearance of a boy's choir ("Great Expectations"), and an orchestra-laden, heartfelt ballad ("Beth"). But there's plenty of Kiss' heavy thunder rock to go around, such as the demonic "God of Thunder" and the sing-along anthems "Flaming Youth," "Shout It Out Loud," "King of the Night Time World," and "Detroit Rock City" (the latter a tale of a doomed concert-goer, complete with violent car-crash sound effects). But it was the aforementioned Peter Criss ballad, "Beth," that made Destroyer such a success; the song was a surprise Top Ten hit (it was originally released as a B-side to "Detroit Rock City"). Also included is a song that Nirvana would later cover ("Do You Love Me?"), as well as an ode to the pleasures of S&M, "Sweet Pain." Destroyer also marked the first time that a comic-book illustration of the band appeared on the cover, confirming that the band was transforming from hard rockers to superheroes. ~ Greg Prato
Before DESTROYER, Kiss' studio albums were only moderate sellers. But the band's concerts were selling out regularly, and 1975's ALIVE! album had gone gold, putting Kiss on the pop map. DESTROYER, on which they teamed with Alice Cooper producer Bob Ezrin, was the breakthrough that finally got Kiss' grandiose rock ideas down on record.
DESTROYER is a chancy, ambitious album. It opens with a radio announcer reporting a teen's death in a car crash, followed by a snippet of "Rock And Roll All Nite" (which had appeared on 1975's DRESSED TO KILL); then the band launches into "Detroit Rock City," an homage to the first city to make them stars. "Great Expectations" features ornate orchestration, a heavenly chorus and a guitar tone that exposes the band's glam-rock ambitions. DESTROYER also includes a ready-made rock anthems ("Shout It Out Loud"), a swipe at manipulative groupies ("Do You Love Me," which is punched up with tubular bells) and a foreboding song about "the lord of the wasteland" that became Gene Simmons' signature tune ("God Of Thunder").
And then there is "Beth," an uncharacteristic ballad, sung and co-written by drummer Peter Criss. The lush strings and delicate piano gave Kiss a Top-10 hit and a greater fan base. Soon would come a TV Movie ("Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park") and a comic book.Mojo (Publisher) (7/02, p.161) - "...Their magnum opus....So mindless, it's almost Zen."

Alive! made KISS a big name, but they needed a successful studio album to follow it up. This album is a step away from their raw rock sound of their first three albums. A lot of the songs on this album are easily found on greatest hits packages. I don't think this is the bands best '70's album, but it is the most significant.

3 stars overrated
kiss is with out a doubt one of the the most overrated bands of all time .they do not belong in the rock and roll hall of fame.maybe there coustumes do, but not there music if thats what you want to call it.there are alot of bands that came out of the 70's that are not in the hall of fame that were alot better such as grand funk, ten years after and humble pie just to name a few.and of course all you kiss fans are going to say if they are so good those bands would be there,no one said life was fair.oh by the way iam sure you kiss fans like devo too.they also sucked.

5 stars Great Album!
If you like this album great! If not BOOOO!!! If you like Kiss, you should hear my band. We have masks(Maybe)and our music is similar to theirs. One of our songs are called "stars above". Another is called "no way out". And we are even going to remake "Iron Man"! But any ways this album is really good. You should buy it right now! And maybe when you are at the store next year look for a cd called "Red Star". That is my band. And you can check here next year too. Don't forget to get tickets to my concert on June or July 24 2006 or 2007 in Canton GA at Swazy's. See you there! GET THIS ALBUM NOW!

4 stars Probably KISS's most popular studio album of all time.
There is no denying that KISS Destroyer is one of the most famous Rock N' Roll albums of all time. KISS was starting to become a household name by the time they released Destroyer, and the album only did more to add to their rising fame. Featuring quite possibly the best album opener of all time, Detroit Rock City, upon listening, you knew that you were in for a wild ride with this album. Detroit Rock City is everything that made KISS one of the greatest bands ever, with it's amazing power chords, Gene Simmons' bouncy bass lines, and Paul Stanley's incredible vocals, it was a KISS fan's dream come true. The next song, King of the Night Time World, was another winner, with it's great rolling drums, and powerful guitar licks, and Paul Stanley singing, "I'm The King!", well, this is arena rock material of the highest order for sure. Next up, Gene unleashes his inner Demon on the wicked song, God of Thunder, a track so unworldly, only Gene Simmons could pull it off. And he does, splendidly. But just when things are really starting to heat up, what does KISS do? They put a cheesy slow melodic song featuring Gene schmoozing it up to the female audience, titled Great Expectations. Sure, it's an okay song, I guess, but...oh, well, let's move on. Paul Stanley steps things up a notch with the song Flaming Youth, which is not one of KISS's best songs ever, but after the last track, at least it picks up the pace a little more. Then there is, Sweet Pain, Gene Simmons' ode to S&M, I'm guessing. I'm not into S&M, but, this is a pretty cool song that I find myself humming to every time that I listen to it. Next up is, Shout It Out Loud, which is another well-known KISS anthem, and, it rocks loud and proud with it's, "You've got to have a Party!" attitude. Up next is a touching ballad to Peter Criss' wife, titled Beth. It's a beautiful song sung by Criss as well, which ironically became KISS's first Top Ten hit, and it literally helped sell thousands more copies of this album to females who swooned at it's mushy lyrics. The last song on the album is Do You Love Me, and it is another song sung this time by Paul Stanley schmoozing it up once again to the ladies, and it is, I'll admit, a guilty pleasure of mine. Then the album comes to an abrupt end with a track that is nothing but distorted concert gibberish with Paul Stanley talking to the audience. What The? That's it? Yep, unfortunately. Still, the album delivers the Rock N' Roll goods, and that's all that really matters. And while it's not what I would consider KISS's best album, it is still no doubt an epic work of music for sure, and a definite crowd pleaser.

And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead has always been a band that defies easy categorization. The Austin-based quartet made a name for itself in the late 1990s as an explosive live act with shows that would usually end in a pile of broken gear and bloodied bandmates. Five albums in--and three on the major label Interscope--the band has matured far beyond their early years with a series of high-concept song cycles, with an anything-goes approach being the only common musical thread.
Their previous outing, WORLDS APART, found them channeling their initial ragged and spastic live energy into prog-inflected art rock with orchestral flourishes, anthemic vocals, and bombastic tympani. With this latest release, SO DIVIDED, the band tempers the grandiosity--albeit only slightly--with an apparent classic Britpop jones (think Zombies, Soft Boys, and XTC) as if taking a cue from their fellow Austinites and former Merge labelmates, Spoon, and the results are a weird, ambitious, and hummable achievement.
Disappointed by the less-than-strong sales of their previous album, Worlds Apart, ...And ...
