RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE is a collection of live concert videos and uncensored versions of 5 original videos.

On paper, Rage Against The Machine reads like Beavis, Boogie Down Productions and Butt-Head: an angry and enlightened rap frontman who preaches a multi-cultural alternative to what they teach you in schools and show you on TV, backed by a funky heavy metal rhythm section whose vampage and riffing pay direct tribute to the likes of the Edgar Winter Group and Led Zeppelin.

But there's no sense of fusion here. Neither a metal band toying with rap nor a rap group fronting as a rock band, R.A.T.M. is four guys who were never told that there's a difference, and who don't care to know. The knowledge-is-good-but-schools-are-bad rap, "Take The Power Back," gives way to a metal instrumental bridge; and the guitar that introduces the Martin/Malcolm/Cassius homage, "Wake Up," pays its own tribute to Zeppelin's "Kashmir." The closest spiritual--but not stylistic--reference point are the alternative raps of the Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy; and Rage's "Bullet In The Head" may be the best song about TV since the Heroes' "Television, The Drug Of The Nation."

Rapper Zack De La Rocha has a thin voice that sounds more like a bored suburban thrasher than an inner-city rhyme animal, but his lyrics are something else altogether. Rising high above the nihilism of both hard-core rap and punk, he offers not just good slogans for a t-shirt, but the promise of a system to replace the one he's bent on destroying. His is a revolution with a purpose.

5 stars RATM is the best band in the world!
These guys play music with great beats and lyrics. They produce music new and uncopiable, they play with a fierce burning desire to give us a reason to get up in the morning.

5 stars political rap-rock
this next to ...and justice for all is the best political metal albums of all time. when this came out nobody knew what to make of them. are they rap, rock, punk, thrash or god knows what else? but what they combine is magic. chili peppers and faith no more even anthrax did rap rock. sometimes it can be funky but other times it can be loud as a bomb. sadly this genre will be cannibalized by the likes of 2 words: kid rock. anyway rap rock should have stopped with this and evil empire. it is now 2009 and there is an economic meltdown but rage will be rage now matter what.

Tool Undertow CD  (1993)

Rage Against The Machine album
CD $15.35  4.5 stars Top 100 Audio Samples Definitive Album
UNDERTOW is an example of nimble heavy metal in the angtsy/artsy tradition of Jane's Addiction. Tool favors medium tempos, which gives several of the group's songs a modern-day Black Sabbath feel, but fortunately lead singer Maynard James mostly steers clear of the usual quasi-operatic yowling favored by most metal frontmen--he's a remarkably expressive singer in a genre not usually so noted. As for the band's world-view, it's pretty much summed up in the unsentimentally named "Prison Sex": "Do unto others, what has been done to you." Recorded at Grand Master Studios, Hollywood, California. Tool: Danny Carey, Paul D'Amour, Maynard James, Adam Jones. Additional personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals).

Tool Aenima CD  (1996) (Import) Germany

Rage Against The Machine CD music
CD $17.39  4.7 stars Top 100 Audio Samples Definitive Album
AENIMA was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Aenima" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. On its second full-length album, this hard-rocking quartet delivers 15 tracks of unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. Rather than overwhelm with huge sonic washes of guitar and booming drums, Tool employs a propulsive, snaky approach that makes use of undulating rhythms and clipped, percussive guitar riffs. Maynard James Keenan's vocals follow suit, opting for a heavily processed slow burn instead of the post-grunge bellow favored by so many hard-rock bands. Instead of flailing uncontrollably in all directions, the group's raw, energetic sound is tightly directed for maximum impact. On songs like "Stinkfist," Keenan rails against injustice while the band churns mercilessly behind him. There is very little humor or light in Tool's worldview (except for song titles like "Hooker With A Penis"); these are songs of painstakingly articulated angst, and they are delivered in an earnest, deadpan manner. These fierce rockers are dead set on making their point, and make it they do, with all the bloodshed and carnage that entails. Additional personnel includes: Marko Fox (vocals); Eban Schletter (organ); Chris Pittman (synthesizer); D.B. (keyboards); Bill Hicks. Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California and The Hook, North Hollywood, California. Personnel: Maynard James Keenan, Bill Hicks (vocals); Eban Schletter (organ); David Bottrill (keyboards); Chris Pitman (synthesizer). Audio Mixer: David Bottrill. Recording information: Ocean Way, Hollywood, CA (1996); The Hook, North Hollywood, CA (1996). Photographers: Fabrico DiSanto; Jeff Novack. "Tire Me" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. "Bulls On Parade" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. "People Of The Sun" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. This long-awaited sophomore release from Rage Against The Machine does not disappoint. Its grinding, ferocious guitar twists Public Enemy-like riffs in and out of the rhythm section's metallic pummeling. But as usual, while Tom Morello's guitar sets the pace, Zach De La Rocha's lyrical attack steals the show. It is, after all, the EVIL EMPIRE they're raging against. De La Rocha goes for the jugular with barbed lyircs, claiming in "Bulls On Parade" that "this microphone explodes, shattering the molds" in a world where "people ain't seen a brown-skinned man since their grandparents bought one." The group's rap-like rhythmic savvy and hard-rock edge bring them to a new plane. In "Snake Charmer," De La Rocha speaks of "greed" with a delirious excitement. Evidently, Rage Against The Machine will continue to rebel against the EVIL EMPIRE. Recorded at Cole Rehearsal Studios, Hollywood, California. Lyricist: Zack de la Rocha. Personnel: Zack de la Rocha (vocals); Tom Morello (guitar); Tim Commerford (bass guitar); Brad Wilk (drums). Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace. Recording information: Cole Rehearsal Studios, Hollywood, CA; Kiss Music Recording Studios, Melbourne, Australia. Photographers: Lisa Johnson ; Lisa Johnson. MASTER OF PUPPETS was Metallica's last album with bass player Cliff Burton. Burton was killed in a traffic accident. He was replaced by Jason Newsted. Metallica's irresistible rise to the top continued with this enigmatic 1986 album. Metallica was a constant touring unit by this point, and their combination of light and dark and their deft staccato delivery, especially on the title track, came brusquely through. Their ever-lengthening arrangements (three songs came in at over eight minutes), bolstered by the precise snap of Hetfield's vocals, testified to their undeniable power. The striding "Battery," the darkly lit "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," as well as the complex instrumental "Orion" all gave powerful testament to their ever-developing skill and vision. Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark from September through December, 1985. Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums).

OK COMPUTER was nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and won the 1998 Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance. OK COMPUTER, Radiohead's third album, is the bombastic follow-up to 1995's sleeper hit THE BENDS, which left critics and listeners as impressed with the band's ability as they were curious about their potential. In spite of its technological-sounding title and apocalyptic sci-fi themes, OK COMPUTER is firmly grounded in the rock verities. Waves of guitars rage beneath the haunting melodies and near-hysterical fits of singer Thom Yorke. This complex, intense swarm of guitars is held aloft by a solid, inventive rhythm section and an impressive array of piano and keyboard textures. "Paranoid Android" is a six-minute-plus epic with alternating time signatures, wild dynamic shifts, drama and adrenaline to spare. "Let Down," with its double-tracked vocals and rhythmic throb, may give a brief glimpse back at Radiohead's past, but at no point is OK COMPUTER anything but a hurtle forward. Engineers include: Nigel Godrich. Photographer: Stanley Donwood. Unknown Contributor Roles: Colin Greenwood; Ed O'Brien ; Jonny Greenwood; Nigel Godrich; Phil Selway; Thom Yorke. Radiohead: Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, Phil Selway. Additional Personnel: Adam Cummings (guitar).

"Guerrilla Radio" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. THE BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Rage Against the Machine doesn't release rushed albums for the sake of exposure. Each of the band's deftly crafted full-length albums has defined a progression in the group's sound and musical vision. Here, Rage has taken the dynamics of its unique style to a deeper level, as evidenced on "Mic Check," which features gentle, unsettling guitar work by Tom Morello, who is deservedly hailed as an innovator of the instrument. The mid-tempo funk of "Maria" finds vocalist Zach De La Rocha telling the poetic story of an immigrant factory worker whose dream of freedom leads her unknowingly into modern-day slavery. Taking up the cause of death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jabal, De La Rocha questions the validity of his trial in "Guerilla Radio" and fleshes out his argument in "Voice of the Voiceless." "Sleep Now in the Fire" finds De La Rocha making historical references to government greed and the darker side of human nature. Though other rap/metal acts may have seemingly copped some of its musical traits, Rage Against the Machine has a conviction and passion that cannot be matched by any other band in the genre. Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California; Royaltone Studios, North Hollywood, California; Silent Sound Studios and Southern Tracks, Atlanta, Georgia; Sunset Sound and Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California.
