The Songs of Distant Earth blend together two motifs crafted through Mike Oldfield's atmospheric music. (Both outer space and inner space under water) are the themes of this album, but Oldfield's synthesized artistry comes up short during the course of the 17 tracks, mainly because of the intermittent talking and unnecessary vocabulary that quickly becomes irksome and ineffective. About the music, it is usually Mike Oldfield's differentiation of rhythms or styles on a song to song basis that makes his music thought-provoking and fresh. On this album, the same rhythm lurks through half of the songs, with only smidgens of add-on instrumentation to elevate its flow. Absent is the freewheeling percussion pulses, or the onslaught of strings that so often shower his music. Instead, each track seems flat as his keyboard work comes off gray and bland. Even a few sudden bursts of tempo become short lived, as the pace always falls back to its straight-lined origin. Inspired by Arthur C. Clarke, Oldfield tries to capture the wonder and mystery of the stars and the sea through washes of synthesizer, but his attempt at capturing both themes could have benefited from a multitude of other instruments, as his work usually includes. ~ Mike DeGagne Songs Of Distant Earth Music Mike Oldfield Songs Of Distant Earth Songs | 1. | In the Beginning |

| Songs Of Distant Earth Music Songs Of Distant Earth Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Not good all the way. This album, his first of post-Virgin period, would have been much better with less fillers. Half of the songs are really good, but i understand the album, more than ever, was meant to listen as a whole.
It also can be considered as a "soundtrack" for the book of the same title (excellent) for Arthur C. Clarke. Submitted by asimov20 (montreal, Quebec) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good odd album This album demonstrates how Mike Oldfield can show many different musical faces. It is different to previous and later things, and it is enourmously bright and a pleasure to listen to. A lot of unusual influences here (even Enigma!) Very good. Submitted by Enri (Madrid, España) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Songs Of Distant Earth
$14.69 Live Recording
Personnel includes: Enya (vocals, percussion); Liam O'Flionn (uillean pipes); Roy Jewitt (clarinet); Steve Sidwell (cornet); Andy Duncan (percussion). Calling Shepherd Moons a near carbon copy of Watermark puts it quite mildly. Like Watermark, Shepherd Moons opens with the title track, a calm instrumental, has another brief instrumental titled after a Dora Saint book smack in the middle ("No Holly for Miss Quinn"), and concludes with a number incorporating a striking uilleann pipes solo, "Smaointe...." In general, Enya's own musical style and work remains the same, again assisted on production by Nicky Ryan and with lyrics by Roma Ryan. Shepherd Moons does have one key factor that's also carried over from Watermark -- it's quite good listening. ...

Songs Of Distant Earth
$14.39 Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Avery Sharpe (bass); Aaron Scott (drums). Recorded at Clinton Studios, New York, New York on February 27 & 28, 1991. Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Avery Sharpe (bass instrument); Aaron Scott (drums). For this tribute to John Coltrane (which he performs with bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Aaron Scott), pianist McCoy Tyner performs some offbeat material including 'Trane pieces that preceded his stay with the classic quartet (such as "Giant Steps") plus a few unrelated standards (including "In Walked Bud" and "Good Morning Heartache"). Six of the nine selections were composed by Coltrane and, although this was his umpteenth 'Trane tribute, McCoy Tyner still sounds enthusiastic and adventurous performing the timeless music. ~ Scott Yanow On this 1991 trio recording with Avery Sharpe (bass) and Aaron Scott (drums), McCoy Tyner draws on compositions from the John Coltrane catalogue. It is an enjoyable, coherent and well-paced set. Sharpe's bass sounds full and centered, and Scott--with his splashy feel--recalls Elvin Jones (although the drums are recorded a bit too ...
