This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Incubus: DJ Kilmore, Mike Einziger, Ben Kenney, Jose Antonio Pasillas II, Brandon Boyd. At the beginning of their career, Incubus was rightly lumped in with the legions of post-Korn alt metal/rap-rock bands swarming America in the latter days of the 20th century. But by their third album, 1999's Make Yourself, they had separated from the pack, as indicated by the presence of producer Scott Litt, best-known for his work with R.E.M.. It signaled that the band was serious, and they began expanding their rap-metal template on that album and its follow-up, 2001's Morning View, completing their transition from juvenelia to maturity with 2003's Crow Left of the Murder. Switching from Litt to producer Brendan O'Brien, a man who has been with Pearl Jam longer than any of their drummers, Incubus has opted for a clean, crisp yet heavy sound which allows them to aggressively switch from crunching metallic riffs to jazzy prog interludes. It's an expansive musical vision charged with some righteous anger; although vocalist Brandon Boyd doesn't write explicit protests, there sure are enough allusions to social turbulence to make this the first politically aware alt metal album in many a year. This maturation is even more evident in the music, how the band actually swings on "Zee Deveel," or how guitarist Michael Einzinger's jazz-influenced solos seem both carefully constructed and casually tossed off, or how Boyd's voice shifts from song to song (or during a song, as on the opening "Megalomaniac," which sounds like a bizarre blend of Mr. Mister's Richard Page and John Lydon). All this maturation does mean that Incubus may shed some older fans, since the naked ambitions on this record are far removed from the earnest, angst-ridden earlier records, but so be it -- A Crow Left of the Murder... is far more interesting than any of their other records, or their peers'. At times, they may stretch themselves a little too far here, but the ambition is admirable and the achievements are tangible -- a real breakthrough for the band. [A Crow Left of the Murder was also released in a limited-edition set with a bonus DVD containing a 26-minute documentary featuring footage from the band's Lollapalooza and Bridge Benefit performances, and of Boyd's injury.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine In 2003, after successfully renegotiating their contract with Epic, Incubus struggled further in parting ways with bassist Dirk Lance. When a proven lineup has a successful chemistry, there is always the danger of tampering with that magic when a personnel change occurs. Luckily, Incubus dodged that bullet and struck gold with four-stringer Ben Kenney (Roots/Blackalicious). The requisite elements that Incubus fans have come to expect are firmly in place on A CROW LEFT OF THE MURDER, with the up-tempo bombast of "Megalomaniac" and "Beware? Criminal," the softer dynamics of "Southern Girl," and radio-friendly "Talk Shows On Mute." What may come as a surprise are the jazzy, proggy moments. In that light, some nods to Rush crop up, as with the chorus of the title track, "Agoraphobia" and the extended instrumental section of "Pistola." Guitarist Mike Einziger offers up plenty of quirky, interesting guitar work, especially in "Sick, Sad Little World" and "Priceless." CROW stands as an evolved statement of intent for Incubus, and a promise that the sky's the limit for this bird of flight.Rolling Stone (3/4/04, p.63) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The band still indulges in plenty of effects-happy instrumental gymnastics and tricky rhythms, but [A CROW] is also its most consistently tune-based album." Mojo (Publisher) (2/04, p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Songs like 'Sick', 'Sad Little World', and 'See Deveel' are exhilarating, Incubus trading their outer aggression for inner animus." **Super Audio CD (SACD) Hybrid** This CD will play in standard CD players. A Crow Left of the Murder Music Incubus A Crow Left of the Murder Songs A Crow Left of the Murder Music A Crow Left of the Murder Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Fun index elevated by SACD version Incubus has out done themselves in the unusual sound effects department on this SACD 5.1 mix. Each song comes content that comes alive from all directions. On some songs, the opening begins slowly and spreads around the room and on other songs, the entrance is simply exploding from the rear to the front. I have both the first release 2 channel CD copy and now the SACD version. Musically they are both the same. When measured on the fun index, the SACD version is the clear winner. Very tastefully done, no channel appears dominent, but rather each channel complements each other. I recommend playing this as loud as your system will allow. Have fun ! Barely fulfills my ridiculously high expectations So maybe "Crow" doesn't stand up to "Make yourself" -- but what does?
(maybe I'm just biased, but I put it up in the top five albums of all time)
Its much much better than "Morning View."
It's a solid CD Submitted by Paul (Peoria, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
not a good album This is in no way, incubus's best work. In my opinion this is a horrible record. But I have got to give some credit to Megalomaniac. That song is excellent. Talk show on mute is not bad either. But the rest of the record is horrible. This is one of the only albums I could not finnish listening to. All there little noises, anoyed me to no end. Incubus needs to put out another, "Make Yourself." Submitted by Kurt (las cruces, NM, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
best ever, and there's a lot of great incubus albums Don't listen to the last reviewer who says "sure you have heard "megalomaniac", which is a good song"
Well, that just shows his credibility because this is the lamest song on the album!
These are the least cheesy songs incubus have put out since S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and it feels like a positive breath of fresh air from the rest of the watered down 'nothing' rock out these days.
They may not be as 'rocky' as incubus's early days but that doesn't mean it isn't a work of art in it's own right.
It puts morning view to shame.
One thing though, it takes a while to grow on you but once it does, you realise how amazing the songs are, totally led by the new bassist, he gives incubus a fresh energy.
Letd own track "here in my room"
Best track : "beware criminal"

Fans of rock, this is not really rock! I see that some people call this cd brilliant, I would call this their 'insanity cd'. sure you have heard "megalomaniac", which is a good song, but they even screwed up that song by throwing a whole bunch of stupid sound effects at the beginning of it, so you'll have to go get the single for that one. next, "talk show on mute" is an ok song, but not their best work by far. the rest of the cd is just a bunch of half-hearted songs meant to take you on a voyage, with lots of sound effects, but lots of stupid chords and riffs too. this is more like a grateful dead cd than the incubus we all grew to love. don't look for any good hard rock songs or even medium rock songs similar to "pardon me", "stellar", or "wish you were here", you're going to get a bunch of sound effects and songs that make you wondering if incubus will ever regain their rock credibility again.
