DVD-Audio may not be your preferred format, but here's a release that actually needs its special capabilities. There have been a number of high-profile albums that have been remixed to take advantage of Surround Sound, a case of retooling the recordings to take advantage of a new consumer format. Music consumers who began their music purchases during the digital era may not be aware that an attempt was made at "more than stereo" recordings back in the '70s, utilizing a four-channel system known as quadraphonic. Beyond being a brilliant composer and guitarist, Frank Zappa was also something of a recording pioneer as well, and as early as 1970 (!) he was making recordings in quadraphonic, and he prepared quad mixes on several of his mid-'70s albums as well. Since quad never really caught on, these recordings have never been heard properly -- until now. Vaultmeister Joe Travers ... Frank Zappa Quaudiophiliac Songs | 1. | Naval Aviation in Art? |

| Quaudiophiliac Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The Zappa Zone Frank Zappa lives again with the desultory musings presented on "QuAUDIOPHILIAc". This latest product from Barking Pumpkin Records showcases a cross section of Zappa's musical genius by juxtaposing earlier and latter material from the late maestro of avant garde rock, jazz, electronica and classical composition. Zappa's signature soundscapes, preeminent whiplash guitar playing, complex musical scoring, all framed in polyrhythmic splendor, and occassionally sprinkled with socio-political satire, is evident on this album. The muscianship is stellar throughout, as is to be expected from any FZ project. Of course, the main attraction of QuAUDIOPHILIAc is that the music here is now presented in thrilling DVD-Audio surround sound, using FZ's original quad mixes from the master tapes. Dweezil Zappa stays true to his father's benchmark formula of crafting albums by segueing disjointed material in unusual and sometimes deranged ways. The four stand-out tracks on QuAUDIOPHILIAc are the two jam session segments, "Rollo" and "Ship Ahoy", the frenzied, "Venusian Time Bandits", and the satisfying re-working of the big band masterpiece, "Waka/Jawaka", which now feels cleaner due to better sound separation. Both the initiated fan, and the soon to be converted casual listener, will revel in this latest Frank Zappa album. We can only hope more posthumous FZ releases are on the horizon. Encore, encore!
