4 stars Originality!
This CD is not polished - that's why I love it. The boys wrote this at a time when they didn't really care about impressing anyone. The songs are witty and will leave you smiling. Some of the lyrics are pretty lame - Staples, for example. But somehow it just works. This is a great cd to put in when you are driving late at nite. Keeps you going.

Further Seems Forever Moon Is Down CD  (2001)

Relient K
CD $10.95  4.4 stars Audio Samples
Further Seems Forever includes: Chris Carrabba (vocals).
Recorded on September 28, 2000 & November 1, 2000.
This one kind of sneaks up on you. At first, as the title track eases crunchily through its first minute, you say to yourself, "Oh, great, another emo band that has lots of deep feelings but can't be bothered to write a tune or impose any kind of structure on its songs." Then the chorus hits. Well, technically it's not really a chorus, because this band doesn't impose much in the way of structure on its songs, but it sure feels like a chorus. Cathartic, tuneful, soaring -- what are they going to do for the rest of the album? Well, it turns out they're going to do the same thing, over and over, with occasional digressions into triple meter. But although the conceit remains pretty much the same, it doesn't ever get tiresome; this band's ability to combine relatively dense guitar rock with an edge of experimentalism and a deep undertow of emotional uplift is more than just impressive -- it's practically inspiring. Highlights include the title track, "Snowbirds and Townies," and the absolutely gorgeous "Just Until Sundown." Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

After moving away from their patented pop/punk approach on 2003's Two Lefts Don't Make a Right...But Three Do, spiritual rockers Relient K revert back to their proven formula of yore on MMHMM. Christian punk sounds more like an oxymoron than a subgenre, but frontman/ lyricist Matt Thiessen wins with the subtle, poppy prose ("Live your life for those that you love") heard on "The One I'm Waiting For." Elsewhere, "High of 75" is wryly, albeit overly optimistic and if there's perhaps an abundance of upbeat songcraft, Relient K aren't always shiny, happy people. The best example of this is "Which to Bury; Us or the Hatchet?," where love turns to relation-sh*t and back again in a roaring, cathartic swirl. At times the lads in Relient K come off a bit too mainstream for their own good, but you've got to give them thanks for not going straight for the jugular the way so many other Christian rockers might. ~ John D. Luerssen
If anyone doubted the influential nature of Christian pop culture in the United States during 2004, they could be directed to the group Relient K, a shining example of crossover success with the mainstream. Though the ensemble is comprised of Born Again Christians and maintains a large following in

Audio Mixer: Randy Staub .
Recording information: Plantation Recording Maui, HI; Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA.
On 2006's LIBERATION TRANSMISSION, the Welsh heavy-rock ensemble Lostprophets build on the bold, razor-sharp sound of their breakthrough record, START SOMETHING, by enlisting veteran producer Bob Rock (Metallica) and session drummer extraordinaire Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle). Often recalling both Faith No More (particularly vocally) and Green Day (with its slight punk-pop edge), the group excels at soaring, guitar-driven anthems, as best exemplified by the utterly infectious single "Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast)." An album that deftly avoids nu-metal and emo trappings, LIBERATION TRANSMISSION went straight to the top of the charts upon its release in the U.K., leaving the alt-rock band poised for great success abroad as well.
Liberation Transmission is the third effort from Lostprophets, though it's debatable whether many (at least stateside) remember much of the Wales post-grunge troupe outside of the massive success of their 2004 single "Last Train Home." The band is down to five players this time around, following the 2005 departure of drummer Mike Chiplin, but with the enrollment of Josh Freese (the Vandals, A Perfect Circle, etc. etc) behind the drum kit, you can be assured the rhythm section's backbone is adequately covered. For much of the album -- from its red/black/white color scheme and extended song titles to the band's newly austere yet fashionable images -- Lostprophets seem to be musically capitalizing on the sonic guitar-driven splendor that initially thrust them into the public's eye, while visually appealing more to fans beyond the confines of the Hoobastank/ Linkin Park crowd. In conjunction with the aforementioned color palate, there's an underlying war-torn theme of bleak, frustrated, and fed up sentiments propelling the vaguely anti-militaristic feeling of early songs. And even if the band's motivations don't appear to be

Relient K is a 'can't miss' proposition in the secular market. On their third disc, Two Left's Don't Make a Right. . .But Three Do, the band is very strong, singing relevant lyrics to the X generation and beyond with the fervor of a bull horn. This release may be the crossover vehicle that launches the band into the stratosphere. Matthew Thiessen's snotty vocals are at their height, with bashing guitars making a noise, too. "Chap Stick, Chapped Lips, and Things Like Chemistry," kicks off the opus with an alternative musical barrage. On a large portion of the disc, guitars are big all over. It's hard to say the band has reached a maturity when lyrical topics include Boy Meets World, Tears for Fears, and cell phones, but on the flip side, cuts like "Falling Out" has "hit single" written all over it, with its driving rhythm and musical interludes that give way to intelligent, well-placed lyrics. "Forward Motion" is punk passion, where most bands would blow through this guitar-charged cut, Relient K pulls back the throttle, as a well-delivered piano brings the song to an eloquent close."Getting Into You" is a tune that will have radio legs. The tune is delivered with an acoustic guitar, and the humbleness and reverence that T

Relient K, named after guitarist Matt Hoopes' well-worn and battered Reliant K car, released their sophomore album, The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek, in August 2001. The Gotee label artists -- with members Matt Hoopes, Matthew Thiessen, Brian Pittman, and Stephen Cushman -- combine the styles of ska and punk, resembling the sound of groups such as MXPX and the O.C. Supertones. The highly energetic band, who once intended on leading worship, offers socially relevant topics communicated in understandable language. Geared toward teenagers and young adults, the pop culture references in tracks including "Sadie Hawkins Dance" and "Maybe Its Maybeline" are quickly identifiable and immediately grasp the listener's attention. Definite highlights include the acoustic "For the Moments I Feel Faint" and "The Rest Is up to You." ~ Ashleigh Kittle
This band of Christian indie-rockers consolidates and expands its reputation as the band of choice for an ever-growing coterie of Christian rock kids with its sophomore album ANATOMY OF THE TONGUE IN CHEEK, expanding its musical horizons along the way. Although the breakneck Green Day-esque rhythms of this self-titled debut are still apparent in songs like "Kick Off" and "Sadie Hawkins Dance," "For the Moments I Feel Faint" points the way to a growing maturity in the band's so

On 2007's LET IT SNOW, BABY LET IT REINDEER, Relient K presents tracks from its earlier DECK THE HALLS, BRUISE YOUR HAND outing, along with other Yuletide songs. Staying true to its punk-pop sound, the Ohio-based Christian rock act offers up lively, guitar-driven versions of Christmas classics, including a fast-paced take on "Angels We Have Heard on High" and a majestic Queen-like rendition of "Handel's Messiah (The Hallelujah Chorus)."
Relient K's holiday album is culled from two different sources; seven tracks are new recordings, while the album's bulk is taken from a previous release, 2003's Deck the Halls, Bruise Your Hands. Accordingly, listeners are treated to two different sounds -- the straight-ahead pop/punk of the band's early years, and the slick sounds of their post-Capitol debut. One can only assume that Let It Snow Baby...Let it Reindeer is geared toward existing fans only, many of whom already own 60-percent of this album. Still, it's still nice to hear the difference a few years can make, as Relient K has aged rather quickly (and rather well) since the group's previous Christmas offering. Occupying the spotlight is Matt Thiessen, who sings the pre-existing carols with the same snot-nosed bravado as countless other acts but tackles the newer cuts with an improved range and delivery. Having climbed into the upper echelon of punk bandleaders in recent years, Thiessen is now a responsible frontman, flipping into his falsetto during "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and helming a surprisingly catchy rendition of "Sleigh Ride." The latter song also features a slew of varied tempos and textures, two important stipulations for creating an engaging Christmas album. We've heard these songs before, often to an incalculable extent, so Relient K's unique renditions are as gratifyi

Acoustic Sketches
Phil Keaggy Acoustic Sketches CD  (1998)

Relient K
CD $14.35  Audio Samples
This collection will primarily appeal to guitarists who are fans of Keaggy's acoustic work, because while there are a few fully developed songs, many of the pieces are exactly what the title states: sketches. The majority of the songs are performed on solo guitar with the aid of the "Jam Man," a device that allows the guitarist to record a snippet of music and then play along with it. Some of the songs are fully realized and very worthwhile for the casual listener (e.g. "Paka" and "The 50th") and Keaggy also performs a beautiful solo acoustic version of his song "Spend My Life with You." The rest will inspire guitarists with the skill and technique involved, but do little for the average listener. Includes "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," an outtake from the Beyond Nature album that has a good time with the classic spiritual. ~ Marc Castellani
