Nominally a rap group, in truth Black Eyed Peas call on so many forms of songwriting and production that slotting them into hip-hop is like slotting Prince into R&B -- technically true, but very limiting. Elephunk, the group's third straight winning LP, doesn't have top-notch rapping, but as driven by frontman Will.I.Am, it does possess some of the most boundary-pushing productions in contemporary, (mostly) uncommercial hip-hop -- right up at the level occupied by Common and OutKast. The smart, brassy opening club thump "Hands Up" hits another level with a sly bridge flaunting some heavy metallic slide guitar, while the highly pressurized love jam "Shut Up" features great interplay between Taboo and new member Fergie. Space doesn't allow for description of each track, but suffice to say any Will.I.Am track is going to feature loads of ideas and fresh sounds, not to mention plenty of stylistic change-ups -- from the digital-step ragga of "Hey Mama" (featuring Tippa Irie) to the Latinized, loved-up "Latin Girls." Like a latter-day Digital Underground, Black Eyed Peas know how to get a party track moving, and add a crazy stupid rhyme or two ("bop your head like epilepsy" from the suitably titled "Let's Get Retarded"). ~ John Bush
With distinct, cuttingly insightful, yet subtle lyrics fed over consistently catchy beats and eclectic arrangements, L.A.'s Black Eyed Peas have earned a high level of respect within the rap world, significant attention at college radio, and even the occasional crossover hit. Third release ELEPHUNK sees the addition of a fourth member, enchanting female vocalist Fergie (introduced with verve on the dancehall "Hey Mama"), and the continued elevation of their style and skills, as the group journeys all over the map, never falling into a funk of boredom.
ELEPHUNK opens the ears from the outset with the flophouse jazz backbeat of "Hands Up," simultaneously easy-going and infectious, before crashing into the fluorescent, straight-up party anthem "Labor Day" using the familiar JB's "The Grunt" sample as successfully as the Bomb Squad did back in 1988. Then there's the perfectly chiseled but fiery "Shut Up" with its insistent Knight Rider-theme beat and call-and-response. ELEPHUNK closes on an unlikely duet with Justin Timberlake, "Where Is the Love," an earnest state-of-the-world ballad that somehow creates a fitting ending to a solid album from one of hip-hop's most intelligent groups.

Alternative Press (9/03, p.118) - 4 out of 5 - "...Better partiers than preachers, these Peas have found their pod..."

E-40 is a rapper who was long overdue for a best-of collection, which finally came in 2004 when Jive released Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow. The Bay Area eccentric debuted his tongue-twisting style for Jive back in 1994 with the Mail Man EP, so this collection spans an entire decade -- and a busy one at that, given that E-40 put out roughly an album a year over that span. He didn't score many genuine hits over those years, as only a few of his singles broke into the Billboard Hot 100, but his fresh style did influence a legion of rappers who began to emulate his slangtastic rhyming style. So, given E-40's lack of hits, Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow is somewhat of a grab bag. Some of the tracks are clear career highlights: "Carlos Rossi," "Captain Save a Hoe," "Rapper's Ball," "Zoom," and "Automatic" in particular. Others are excellent and exemplary if somewhat unexceptional, likewise the few previously ...

GARY HARRISGary Harris - Opening and sharing the stage with musical pioneers and innovators such as Kim Waters, Norman Brown, Gerald Albright, Will Downing, Bobby Lyle, Phil Perry, Tower of Power, Bo Diddly, and The Gap Band; Gary Harris propels his way atop the Jazz genre while sharing his musical genius with other notable and talented artists (The Coaters, Percy Sledge, Trudy Lynn, Cecil Welch, William Bell, Gwin McCray, Leslie Gore, Jean Carn, Outkast, and Ann Nesby).A young impressionable Gary Harris became captivated by music and the saxophone at an early age after hearing “Pink Panther” played by a saxophonist while in grade school. Further nurturing Gary’s newfound interest and his gift of music, Gary’s parents presented him with his first musical instrument, a flute; as Gary honed his musical gift with intense passion he later received his very own saxophone by age 10. By grade 7 Gary participated in his first talent show, a performance which set precedence in Gary Harris’ life, to create music for people to move to and be moved by. Throughout adolescence, Gary gained valuable experience and exposure ...
