Aaliyah has a pleasant voice, but the real reason the teenager's debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, was a hit is the radio-ready production courtesy of R. Kelly, her then-husband. Kelly wraps Aaliyah's voice in layers of lush synths and deep grooves, while adding songs that are frequently better than the ones on his own album, 12 Play. Suprisingly enough, it no longer takes an adult to perform as an adult in today's music industry, especially one filled with so much young talent. Proving that her age has no bearing on her music's maturity, R. Kelly's protege Aaliyah debuts with AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER. Aaliyah complements the album's material, appealing to both R&B and hip-hop listeners, while managing to "keep it smooth with a jazz attitude."
Detroit's Aaliyah surprised the public when she succesfully hit with her first single, "Back And Forth," which found its market on the club scene. The album's other highlights are soft, mellow tunes like "At Your Best (You Are Love)," "Young Nation," "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" and "Down With The Clique." Producing all tracks, R. Kelly definitely has a `90s swing evident on this project. Also obvious is that Kelly writes all but one song, because what fifteen-year-old can drive or make love. It's no secret that R. Aaliyah's debut album is very impressive and has a very personal feel, considering it was mostly written by her mentor R. Kelly and produced by Kelly and Liyah's uncle Barry Hankerson. Aaliyah was very mature at 16 and sung these songs from an honest understanding of their content and musical direction.
The album is somewhat diverse in how different musical themes blend, all light, smooth R+B and a deft mix of: Soul R+B/Pop/Hip-Hop/Rap.
other artists introduced each track, but she gradually eased her way into the songs until she modestly owned them; we just know who the boss is...
the album features: Back And Forth, Age Ain't Nothing... (title track), Down With The Clique, At Your Best (written by Ron Isley), No One Knows How To Love Me Quite Like You Do, I'm So Into You and I'm Down.
This is no sample or tribute album as every song is connected by her one familiar signature Aaliyah theme: street-but-sweet.
i began my Aaliyah collection with "I Care 4 U", but had i known how good this was i would've started with this one...

 You can't get no better than the classics
Aaliyah in my opinion still reigns as one of the best rnb singers/entertainers of the time. Now more artists are starting to explore the different genres with a versatility she did almost a decade before. A.A.N.B.A.N represents the era of the 90's. Smooth laid back, but always funky. And did I mention smooth? A great listen. R.I.P Aaliyah.

aaliyah best album was age ain't nothing but a number they said she work hard on it and did her thing. everybody love at your best (you are love)and back and forth.they said she was young but she was very smart. everybody should have aaliyah first cd, age ain't nothing but a number. Aaliyah's debut album is really something every R'n'B fan should own. Although her new album is much better, I think "Age Ain't Nothing" is a good album. The best songs are the title track and Young Nation, At Your Best You Are Love (a beautiful love song) and her debut single Back & Forth.
(Mine also includes a song called The Thing I Like. I don't know why is this song not listed here.)

The Byrds' second album, Turn! Turn! Turn!, was only a disappointment in comparison with Mr. Tambourine Man. They couldn't maintain such a level of consistent magnificence, and the follow-up was not quite as powerful or impressive. It was still quite good, however, particularly the ringing number one title cut, a classic on par with the "Mr. Tambourine Man" single. Elsewhere, they concentrated more on original material, Gene Clark in particular offering some strong compositions with "Set You Free This Time," "The World Turns All Around Her," and "If You're Gone." A couple more Bob Dylan covers were included, as well, and "Satisfied Mind" was their first foray into country-rock, a direction they would explore in much greater depth throughout the rest of the '60s. ~ Richie Unterberger
