The release mirrors the alternative rock style St. James adopted in her sophomore album, straying from the CCM sounds featured on her debut project. Songs include the title cut, "Come Quickly Lord," and "Omega." Pray also covers Rich Mullins' "Hold Me Jesus" and Keith Green's "Lord You're Beautiful." ~ Ashleigh Kittle This is definitely not your father's gospel music. Which is to say that Australian-born Rebecca St. James will never be mistaken for Mahalia Jackson; in fact, she sounds more like Alanis Morissette, assuming Ms. M had a personal experience with God. Basically, this is a state-of-the-art post-Nirvana alt-rock package that just happens to feature lyrics praising Jesus at every opportunity, which can be a tad disorienting at first. Fortunately, St. James's songs are almost as tuneful as her musical role models, and the various guitars employed here channel Kurt Cobain with brisk efficiency (that is, when they're not also summoning the Edge). | | Sanctus Real Face Of Love CD (2006)
Pray
$10.75 Christian rockers Sanctus Real blend elements of post-grunge, indie rock, and emo with messages of faith and devotion. The band sounds very assured on its third outing, THE FACE OF LOVE, with smarter, catchier songcraft, tighter arrangements, and some nice sonic trimmings. The album's opener and first single, "I'm Not All right," is a melodic blast that proves Sanctus Real can be majestic and sweeping, while "Eloquent" is tight and nervous, and the title track merges a post-punk ethos with pop-rock. In all, THE FACE OF LOVE is an impressive showing from one of Christian rock's brighter lights. Having evolved from power pop to heavier rock back to melodic modern fare, Sanctus Real blend the styles of their previous two efforts on The Face of Love. The quartet takes listeners on a journey to a sonic realm of introspection, restlessness, and unresolved pondering as only they can do. If you swirled together Switchfoot's The Beautiful Letdown, Jars of Clay's Good Monsters and U2's How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, the concoction would sound much like this. The influences don't stop there, as traces of Dashboard Confessional, Nine Days, Jeremy Camp, Mae, and others blend seamlessly together. The ...

| | Israel Real CD (2002)
Pray
$8.99 Personnel includes: Israel Houghton (vocals, guitar); Tommy Sims (arranger, acoustic guitar, bass); John Catchings (cello); The Nashville String Machine (strings); Sam Levine (flute); Bobby Taylor (oboe); Mark Douthit (saxophone); Jeff Bailey (trumpet); Aaron Lindsey (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Paul Garcia (keyboards, programming); Tim Akers (keyboards); Dan Needham (drums); Javier Solis (percussion); Tata Vega, Bethel World Outreach Choir, Andre Crouch Singers (background vocals). Recorded at The Compound, Sound Kitchen, Franklin, Tennessee; Quad, Nashville, Tennessee; Barry Paul, Hollywood, California; Pauly's Place, San Antonio, Texas. Surrounded on either side by live albums, Israel & New Breed's Real is in the minority as a full-on studio album. Having made a name for themselves touring the country and putting on larger-than-life praise & worship concerts, going into the studio could have been a fish-out-of-water experience for Israel and his crew. Though the color of the project is certainly different, including sounds otherwise not heard from this group, including the occasional drum sample and ...
