Usher broke big in 1997 with his second record, My Way, and there was no looking back. After it rocketed up the charts, Usher capitalized on his good looks and sweet charms, attempting to break into movies and pushing his celebrity status. All of which meant, of course, that there was little time for him to concentrate on a sequel to My Way. Nevertheless, in pop music it's imperative to stay in the public eye, so Live was released a year and a half after My Way. Live albums often feel like a way to buy time while an artist figures out what to do, and there's no question that Usher's entry is part of that time-honored tradition, since there's no real reason for him to release a live album as his third record. And Live does feel like filler, since the only real evidence of his charismatic performances are the continual shrieks from the teenage audience. As a matter of fact, he sounds tired and weary on many tracks, even his signature tunes "You Make Me Wanna" and "My Way." Hardcore fans will find his Bobby Brown medley of interest, since it doesn't appear on either studio record, but the live performances here all fall flat. The remixes that are tacked on to the end are better, especially Jermaine Dupri's reworking of "My Way," but they don't necessarily improve an unnecessary album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Whitney Houston I Look To You CD  (2009)

Live
CD $13.65  3.9 stars Top 100 Audio Samples
Despite her star having lost some of its luster in the 2000s, Whitney Houston is still regarded as a benchmark for modern singers of all stripes (from soulful divas to would-be pop idols). Almost seven years in the making, 2009's I LOOK TO YOU marks a music industry homecoming for the singer. Supported by a mob of A-list producers and songwriters including Diane Warren, David Foster, R. Kelly, Alicia Keys, and many more, Houston's vocals are in fine form on material ranging from hip-hop-tinged contemporary R&B ("Million Dollar Bill") to `70s covers (Leon Russell's "A Song for You") to adult contemporary torch songs ("I Look to You").
It's only been seven years between Just Whitney and 2009's I Look to You, not even Houston's longest time between albums, but it feels much, much longer, her glory days obscured in hazy memories of lost luster chiefly deriving from a bad marriage with Bobby Brown, chronicled in an embarrassing reality show for Bravo in 2004. I Look to You attempts to wash this all away with something of a return to roots -- a celebration ...

It Takes A Nation: The First London Invasion Tour 1987
Public Enemy It Takes A Nation: The First London Invasion Tour 1987 CD  (2005) With DVD

Live
CD $9.45  Audio Samples
The First London Invasion Tour 1987 Public Enemy: Flavor Flav, Chuck D (rap vocals); Terminator X (turntables); Professor Griff, Brother Mike Williams, Brother James Norman.
Look at that date on the cover: 1987. If you could pick one year from which you could see a Public Enemy concert, wouldn't it be 1987? It's the year the group exploded onto the scene with a bona fide classic debut album and a manipulative attitude toward the media, the likes of which had never been seen before in hip-hop. As evidenced by the backstage cutaways sprinkled throughout the concert, journalists were extra anxious to shove their microphone in Public Enemy's face. And the fans? With fists in the air and clocks around their necks, they were building into the "nation" Chuck D spoke of frequently. It was a fascinating, exciting, revolutionary time for rap. The CD/DVD combo It Takes a Nation: The First London Invasion Tour 1987 gives the curious and nostalgic a chance to relive it all, but one thing keeps it from being a "you are there!" affair. The video quality of the concert is just a shade above N.Y.C. street vendor standards, looking like a VHS recorded at the six-hour speed and then retrieved from the attic 18 years later. It's hardly unwatchable, but colors bleed and the sound often peaks the meters. But the performance is a fantastic in-your-face explosion. Watching Chuck D go from tentative -- it was his first show in front of a U.K. audience -- to dominating is riveting. Flavor Flav anxiously paces the stage and riles the crowd into a frenzy while DJ Terminator X comes off as a mad scientist, twiddling the knobs while there's a riot going on. Above it all is the massive difference between just listening to Public Enemy and seeing them. The infamous Professor Griff and the S-1Ws were just stern guys whose images appeared on album covers and flashed by in jittery videos, but in concert they were vital pieces of the puzzle, emphasizing Black Panther history and balancing the madness of Flavor Flav. The intense screaming of the audience probably covered it up nicely in the venue, but when you realize the "live" "Bring the Noise" relies mostly on a backing tape -- vocals included -- it's one ...

INXS Switch CD  (2005) DualDisc

Now with sensational vocalist J.D. Fortune from the TV show Rock Star: INXS added to the band's lineup, INXS returns with their newest dualdisc. Included is the complete album on the CD side, and on the DVD side, live performance footage, making of the albun, interviews, and behind-the-scenes material. This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
INXS: Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly, Andrew Farriss, Tim Farriss, J.D. Fortune, Gary Beers.
INXS seemed to be finished as an entity after the death of lead singer Michael Hutchence in 1997. Yet in a rather bizarre commercial move, the band signed on to a reality-TV show based on the idea of finding a new lead singer. They came away with J.D. Fortune, a Canadian who at one time made his living as an Elvis impersonator. Surprisingly enough, though, Fortune is a good fit for the band, with a pouty, sultry croon that recalls--not coincidentally--Hutchence.
The appropriately titled SWITCH finds INXS in full working order once again. Though a good many years past their late-'80s glory days, 2005's SWITCH certainly has the classic INXS sound, and their appealing mix of rock muscle, seductive swagger, and dancefloor grooves holds up quite well. The album's first single, "Pretty Vegas," is a driving rocker that recalls vintage hits like "Devil Inside," while moody ballads like "Afterglow" find the band in U2-like stadium-rock mode. After conquering a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, these Australian lads have put themselves back on the map with this solid effort.
For all intents and purposes, the death of Australian rock band INXS' lead singer, Michael Hutchence, in 1997 ended the band's career. Despite being a phenomenal live band with influences that combined funk, new wave, and melodic rock, Hutchence was always the focal point of the band, and without his rock star charisma and, more importantly, his warm, soulful vocals, there really wasn't much point for the band to continue. They did make attempts, though, with both Terence Trent d'Arby and Jon Stevens fronting the band in the late '90s and early 2000s, respectively. But nothing worked until the band hooked up with reality TV impresario Mark Burnett for the extended audition show Rockstar: INXS, which found unknown vocalists from around the world competing to become the new lead singer of INXS. Forgetting for a second that Hutchence was one of the most naturally gifted and immediately recognizable singers of his generation and that replacement singers rarely work for established bands, it seemed unlikely that INXS would have any luck finding a suitable replacement among the motley group of men and women who showed up oversinging and pandering to the studio crowd on the first episode. However, if host Dave Navarro's segment on teaching the contestants how to dress like outrageous rock stars was any indication, it became clear early on that all the band was looking for was a relatively good-looking, relatively tuneful young man who could evince some cocksure rock smarminess in tight leather pants and karaoke his way through "New Sensation": enter J.D. Fortune. A former Elvis impersonator from Canada, Fortune ...

Rihanna's "Pon the Replay" was the jam of summer 2005, and with good reason: its Caribbean-flavored rhythms and infectious, singalong chorus made it nearly irresistible. The Barbados-born singer's full-length, MUSIC OF THE SUN, performed well on the strength of the single, and offered more of Rihanna's commercially tailored dancehall-pop.
A GIRL LIKE ME, Rihanna's sophomore release, is less overtly dancehall-influenced than its predecessor. Instead, the album makes a more straightforward play for mainstream R&B appeal. The album's lead-off single and video "SOS," for example, centers on a sample from Soft Cell's version of "Tainted Love" (including the immediately recognizable laser-gun sound), making for a bouncy, sexy pop confection. "Unfaithful" is an R&B ballad that finds Rihanna in torch mode, and sounds like a hit in the making. While there's nothing quite as striking as "Pon the Replay" here, there is plenty to power Rihanna's rise up the charts.
Versatile urban dance-pop singer Rihanna gracefully avoids the sophomore ...
