Many who listen to this album will say "Hey, this isn't punk" after not finding the power chords and 1-4-5 structures that they associate with poppy skate rock bands like NOFX and Lagwagon, but this is what revolution is all about. Taking a industry of specifications and expectations and turning it fully on its head, yet holding on to some semblance of what once was. Refused are pure innovation and passion spouting Nation of Ulysses-esque doctrine while fusing together the bite and flavor of fist-raised, Dillinger Escape Plan-style hardcore with ambient textures, jazz breakdowns, and other such deviations. Choppy, beautiful movements, choked thoughts, and feelings of elevation. This is what punk is all about friends, although to the common ear it may not sound like it -- and that is precisely one of the reasons why it is so potent. ~ Blake Butler Hardcore punk band Refused opened up and expanded their sound for THE SHAPE OF PUNK TO COME (a take-off on the title of the classic avant-jazz disc by Ornette Coleman, THE SHAPE OF JAZZ TO COME). They've become more sophisticated in their presentation, but still maintain their crunching, take-no-prisoners musical ethic--when they let the guitars kick in, they still manage to deliver a brutal, politically inspired racket.

Unfortunate that the title is a misnomer. This record is an incredibly diverse disc of extreme proportions. If you like anything close to Refused get this album. Submitted by spa (Putney, VT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
We lack the motion to move to the new beat! This is the album that should've changed everything for punk...just outstanding and original, Lyxzen has some of the most inspiring lyrics and delivers them beautifully, whether it be deafening screams or melodic chants. The Shape of Punk To Come isn't the normal definition of "punk" per se, but it is truly amazing what they created with this, their last full length CD. Too bad they "broke up", although they're all still good friends and The (International) Noise Conspiracy definitely helps ease the pain. But nothing can touch this band...pure genious. Buy the damn thing! NOW!!! Submitted by a reviewer (St. Louis, MO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The title says it all Refused really show on tis album that punk is not about spiky haircuts, self-imposed angst, skater shorts and whiny voices. Its about protest and the desire to push the music further. ESSENCIAL. Submitted by Tolly (Edinburgh, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Digitally remastered by Simon Heyworth (Chop 'Em Out). Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Dave Murray , Adrian Smith (guitar); Steve Harris (bass guitar); Nicko McBrain (drums). Routinely ranked among the greatest heavy metal albums of all time, The Number of the Beast is the birth of Iron Maiden as we know it, a relentless metal machine lifted to soaring new heights by the arrival of erstwhile Samson frontman Bruce Dickinson. Dickinson's operatic performance here made him an instant metal icon, challenging even Rob Halford for bragging rights, and helped launch the band into the stratosphere. The Number of the Beast topped the charts in the U.K., but even more crucially -- with Judas Priest having moved into more commercial territory -- it also made Iron Maiden the band of choice for purists who wanted their metal uncompromised. Maiden took the basic blueprint Priest had created in the late '70s -- aggressive ...

Shape Of Punk To Come
$9.95 Personnel: Jesse Poe (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Umberto Trivella (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Phil Murphy (lap steel guitar); Isobel Campbell (cello, background vocals); Darius Jones (saxophone); Paul Watson (cornet); Curtis Fye (upright bass, electric bass); Michele Poulos (electric bass, background vocals); Alexander Neilson (drums). Liner Note Author: Chris Leo. Recording information: Sound Of Music, Richmond, VA (08/2004). Photographer: Chia Chi Charlie Chang. Despite its religious-sounding name, this musical collective writes and performs gently lyrical acoustic-based songs written by its nominal leader, Jesse Poe, who comes from an American rural musical background. In this release the collective departs from the more experimental sound of its self-titled 2004 album in favor of coherent, pop-based song structures. The pastoral-sounding "Drink to Sher" recalls the delicate textures of Lambchop, while the percussive, atmospheric "Winter Song" conjures early Beck, and the layered "Grebreathes" is a trippy, ethereal romp through neo-psychedelic soundscapes. It has to be said first and foremost -- Ardent Fevers is a great album title, seemingly straightforward but expressive of a state of mind better than most. Perhaps appropriately, the same could be said of Tanakh's work, with Jesse Poe's collective again finding a way to understatedly hotwire the more epic and symphonic impulses of 21st century indie rock (for lack of a better term) into an elegant new ...
