Dream Theater: James LaBrie (vocals); John Petrucci (guitar); Derek Sherinian (keyboards); John Myung (bass); Mike Portnoy (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: David Rosenthal (programming). Recorded at Bear Tracks Studio, Suffern, New York in May 1995 and live at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, London, England on January 31, 1995. Includes liner notes by Dream Theater. A Change of Seasons is a strange disc. There are only five tracks but with a total time that approaches an hour anyway. The first track, the 23-minute, seven-part epic "A Change of Seasons," is one of the most impressive pieces of music ever written in the progressive metal vein. With the same heavy sound that marked Awake, but with many other styles mixed in, the track features incredible playing, dramatic, complex instrumental arrangements, and soaring vocals. New keyboardist Derek Sherinian (formerly of Kiss and Alice Cooper) adds his own stamp to the Dream Theater sound as if he'd always been with them. The remainder of the tracks are live cover tunes, recorded from the band's "Uncovered" gig at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club; the material varies widely and includes Elton John's "Love Lies Bleeding" and Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers." The final track, "The Big Medley," has to be heard to be believed; Dream Theater shift musical styles on a dime to cover Pink Floyd, Kansas, Queen, Journey, the Dixie Dregs, and Genesis all in ten minutes. ~ Phil Carter Dream Theater Change Of Seasons Songs Change Of Seasons Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Never cease to amaze. Although, there is only one Dream Theater official new track, it pays an awesome worth of a 23 minute delight. The other songs, which are covers, are masterfully done, particularly the Led Zep medley. An EP with awesome musicians; Petrucci with his unique rhythms and memorable solos, Myung with his supportive virtuosic bass lines, Portnoy with fantastic signatures and fills after fills, LaBrie with his powerful melodic vocals, and the presentation of Derek Sherinian on keyboards proving his worth to the song by assisting the members. A must have for any DT fan, progressive fan, and/or musically challenging musician-seekers. Highly recommended. Submitted by leddreamsound (San Diego, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Must get for all rockers! This is one of the coolest albums ever by one of the Greatest Progressive Rock Bands ever formed. Really love the line up of the songs, the first song "The Change of Seasons" really rocks! A whooping 20+mins song to kick start the party! Dream Theater - Amazing Both Live And In The Studio The title track on this album is phenomenal...it's exactly what die-hard fans expect from Dream Theater. I think that listening to this album would be a great way to introduce a new fan to Dream Theater's music. The live covers that make up most of the album are SO GOOD. Some of them are performed as medleys, and the band goes through all the changes without missing a beat. Awesome. Submitted by a reviewer (California, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Atypical Dream Theater, Awesome Results The first song is in typical Dream Theater fashion:an awesome production. Regarding the cover songs, a song should not be covered, unless it can be improved upon. Dream Theater improves every cover. Don't expect anything radical, just a better rendition of the original. I would have preferred a CD that stuck with the same theme and not mixed an original studio song with several live cover songs. Regardless, the CD is awesome. A brilliant epic followed by above average covers Dream Theater has again succeeded in producing an exceptional progressive rock / progressive metal epic with all their signature styles, including scorching guitar and vocal lines, intricate drums and bass, and insightful keyboard work. The compostion is very skillful, especially in the use of odd meter and in the segues between different sections of the song. I would argue that this is one of their best pieces of all time. The covers are good, but not as amazing, mainly because Dream Theater didn't WRITE the songs. It is interesting, however, to hear them cover styles that they are not usually associated with (especially Elton John and Journey). For those who like their songs "Voices," "Scarred," and "The Dance of Eternity," this album is a must. Submitted by a reviewer (Boston, MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
