HATFUL OF HOLLOW includes songs recorded live for BBC Radio 1. The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, mandolin, harmonica); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Producers: John Porter, The Smiths, Roger Pusey, Dale Griffin. Several months after releasing their first album, the Smiths issued the singles and rarities collection Hatful of Hollow, establishing a tradition of repackaging their material as many times and as quickly as possible. While several cuts on Hatful of Hollow are BBC versions of songs from The Smiths, the versions on the compilation are nervy and raw -- and they're also not the selling point of the record. The Smiths treated singles as individual entities, not just ways to promote an album, and many of their finest songs were never issued on their studio albums. Hatful of Hollow contains many of these classics, including the sweet rush of "William, It Was Really Nothing," and the sardonic "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now," the tongue-in-cheek lament of "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want," the wistful "Back to the Old House," "Girl Afraid," and the pulsating, tremolo-laced masterpiece "How Soon Is Now?" With such strong material forming the core of the album, it's little wonder that Hatful of Hollow is as consistent as The Smiths and arguably captures the excitement surrounding the band even better. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine A composite of radio sessions and sundry early singles, HATFUL OF HOLLOW provides an alternative snapshot of the Smiths' early career. Compiled in the wake of their debut album, it exhibited all of their considerable strengths, in particular Johnny Marr's ringing, expressive guitarwork. The riff he creates on 'How Soon Is Now' is thoroughly captivating. Vocalist Morrissey's distinctive croon and solipsistic lyrics are already unique and give the group its originality. At times ironic, at others wistful (as on 'Back To The Old House'), he takes the Smiths into new areas of expression and his contrasting visions are fully expressed herein.

The Smiths: Hatful Of Hollow The Smiths second album, Hatful Of Hollow, is definitely a must-have. This album contains pretty much live recordings, songs off of the debut album, and the band's three new singles. This album is worth it alone for Johnny Marr's brilliant guitar work in the BBC Sessions (consisting of John Peel 9/21/83 and Kid Jensen 4/7/83). You'll love "How Soon Is Now?", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now", and especially the BBC sessions. This album is one to pick up, and if you don't own it, pick it up now. Submitted by MozMarr522 ("Mt. A Wonderful Introduction! This is the first Smiths album I listened, and it provides a superb introduction to the band. It has many really classic songs, like How Soon Is Now, and William It Was Really Nothing, and also interesting BBC Session versions of some great songs off the first LP. Excellent! Hatful Of Hollow
$10.59 The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, harmonica); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded at Pluto and Eden Studios, Manchester, and Matrix and Strawberry Studios, London in the winter of 1983. Arriving in an era dominated by synth pop and gloomy post-punk, the Smiths' eponymous debut was the bracing beginning of a new era. On the surface, the Smiths' sound wasn't ...

Hatful Of Hollow
$10.65 Live Recording
The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, piano); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded at Amazon Studios, Liverpool and Ridge Farm, Surrey, England. The Smiths' second album isn't a great leap forward, but it does contain some fine guitar-pop, including "The Headmaster Ritual," "Rusholme Ruffians," and "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore." The American version included the pulsating "How Soon is Now?," which doesn't fit the mood of the rest of the album. ~ ...
| | Smiths Queen Is Dead CD (1986)
Hatful Of Hollow
$10.79 The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded in England in Winter 1985. Meat Is Murder may have been a holding pattern, but The Queen Is Dead is the Smiths' great leap forward, taking the band to new musical and lyrical heights. Opening with the storming title track, The Queen Is Dead is a harder-rocking record than anything the Smiths had attempted before, but that's only on a relative scale -- although the backbeat is more pronounced, the group certainly doesn't ...

| | Smiths Strangeways, Here We Come CD (1987)
Hatful Of Hollow
$9.09 The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals, piano); Johnny Marr (guitar, piano); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded at The Wool Hall, Bath, England in the spring of 1987. Recorded as the relationship between Morrissey and Johnny Marr was beginning to splinter, Strangeways, Here We Come is the most carefully considered and elaborately produced album in the group's catalog. Though it aspires greatly to better The Queen Is Dead, it falls just short of its goals. ...
| | Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Absolutely Free CD (1967) Remastered
Hatful Of Hollow
$6.38 Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (guitar, vocals); Ray Collins (vocals); Bunk Gardner (saxophone); Don Preston (keyboards, vocals); Roy Estrada (bass, vocals); Jimmy Carl Black, Billy Mundi (drums, percussion, vocals). This package contains the complete libretto (clean American version), plus two additional tracks not included on the original release. Frank Zappa's liner notes for Freak Out! name-checked an enormous breadth of musical and intellectual influences, and he seemingly attempts to cover them all on the second Mothers of Invention album, Absolutely Free. Leaping from style to style without warning, the album has a freewheeling, almost schizophrenic quality, encompassing everything from complex mutations of "Louie, Louie" to jazz improvisations and quotes from Stravinsky's Petrushka. It's made possible not only by expanded instrumentation, but also Zappa's experiments with tape ...
