Beach Boys Pet Sounds Songs Pet Sounds Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews PET SOUNDS HEARD BY PEOPLE WHEN BRIAN STARTED TO WRITE HIS MASTERPIECE HE TURNED TO PAUL MCCARTNEY AND THE BEATLES FOR HIS INSPIRATION. WHEN THIS WAS FIRST HEARD BY THE SUITS AT CAPITAL, THEY JUST DID NOT GET IT. THE EXECUTIVES WANTED MORE SURF MUSIC AND TO STICK TO THE GAME PLAN. BRIAN FOLLOWED HIS DREAM AND PRODUCED THE ALBUM THAT CAME FROM DEEP INSIDE HIS MIND. THIS ALBUM IS ABOUT GROWING UP. IT IS ABOUT FINDING ONE SELF , GETTING MARRIED, ALL OF THE ROADS WHICH LEAD US TO BECOME ADULTS. THIS IS A TRUE TESTAMENT OF ALL OUR INSECURITIES AND QUESTIONS. THIS WORK OF ART BELONGS AHEAD OF REVOLVER AND JUST BEHIND THE ALBUM OF ALL TIME ,SGT PEPPER. THANKYOU BRIAN Submitted by tobigal (naples, florida) Was This Review Helpful? A '60s Masterpiece, Artfully Remastered Nearly a Brian Wilson solo project, Pet Sounds is a tone-perfect snapshot of teen life in mid-sixties California. But it's more...much more. While the songs are wonderfully crafted, it's the production, as rendered by Brian, that sets this one apart.
Vocal arrangements so tight that a prayer could not slip through, unique horn charts, amazing bass lines, Pet Sounds was so unlike anything that came before that its audience was puzzled; it sank from the charts with a bullet. Influential among musicians, it took decades to be appreciated by a wider audience. Now, nearly everybody knows what Paul McCartney and others knew then: Pet Sounds is not just a great album, it is art, a pop masterpiece deservedly lionized 36 years later.
Repeated listenings always bring fresh surprises; from nowhere, a banjo springs forth...over there, a bicycle horn blares...barking dogs, "plucked" piano strings, always in context, seemlessly woven into a majestic musical tapestry that refuses to sound dated.
The idea of a "stereo" version of Pet Sounds is sacrilege (fiddling with the greatest album ever?). Having said that, it must be noted that the original cd release of Pet Sounds was a bit leaden and muddy. Newly remastered in stereo, the fidelity is breathtaking. Crisp and clear, with its gorgeous intricacy lade bare, it's not just worth another listen; it's a revelation. Submitted by a reviewer (bethlehem, PA) Was This Review Helpful? With all respect but... I understand why people like this album, it's a good one. What I don't get is why they even compared it with SPLHCB by the Beatles. Let's face it, The Fab 4 admired the Boys, but the Beatles created an album that musically surpassed all the 60's american and british efforts. Submitted by debeyhaber (Monterrey, N. L. Now I'm a Believer I had read the reviews that stated this is one of the best albums ever. Now I'm a believer. The harmonies are incredible, even if the riffs are simple. It is the best from this genre and certainly the forefather to many of the rock harmonies we hear today. Submitted by a reviewer (Washington, DC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Beatles The liner notes of this cd have a quote from the Beatles declaring that their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was a direct response to the Beach Boy's Pet Sounds. They were greatly influenced by Brian Wilson and vice versa. And in my opinion the Beach Boys were never the same again without him. Of the legions of artists and characters to emerge in the great alt-rock explosion of the '90s, the man called E is one of the oddest, partially because he's etched a career that is both doggedly obstinate and strangely predictable. Throughout his career, E has followed his muse wherever it takes him -- it just happens to take him to places that seem familiar. Just as the alt-rock circus kicked off in 1992, he released A Man Called (E) to little more than power pop acclaim, but once he formed an ad-hoc band called the Eels in 1996, he gained a hit with "Novocaine for the Soul" and earned a cult following that he sustained into the 21st century when, once again, he was a one-man band, only this time retaining the commercial cache (or at least recognition) that came with the Eels' name. His 2003 effort, Shootenanny!, is the first where he doesn't make much of a pretense of this being a band affair -- the notes say it's "performed by Mark Oliver Everett (you can call him 'E')" -- and it does not seem like a coincidence that it's also his best album since his dark night of the soul, 1998's Electro-Shock Blues. In many ways, it's a lot more listenable, since the doom that hangs over that album makes it a little impenetrable. This has a sour temper and a black humor, as well as a general sense of self-satisfied gloominess, but he's more tongue-in-cheek about it these days, as the impish title suggests. This record isn't folky, the way hootenannies were, but it does have a strong blues and singer/songwriter element to the record. Since he's been saddled with this comparison countless times, it feels both trite and unfair to say he often sounds like Beck on Shootenanny!, but he does -- he sounds like a combination of Beck and Tom Waits, put through a power pop prism. So, even if it isn't entirely original, it is an appealing sound, but E has turned into a good editor, trimming away his excesses, emphasizing both his hooks and his atmosphere, and bringing it all in at 40 minutes. It's not as poppy ...

Styx: Tommy Shaw (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, keyboards, synthesizer); John Curulewski (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Glen Burtnick (vocals, guitar, bass); James Young (vocals, guitar); Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards); Chuck Panozzo (vocals, bass); Todd Sucherman, John Panozzo (vocals, drums, percussion). Includes liner notes by Martin Huxley. It seems that a double-disc collection of Styx would contain all their biggest hits, along with all of their key album tracks. Come Sail Away: The Styx Anthology comes close to fitting that description, but it falls short in a couple of noticeable ways. The compilers have made a conscious decision to emphasize the progressive hard rock side of the band, devoting most of the first disc of the 35-song collection to their '70s album-oriented rock radio staples. By the end of that disc, the hits start coming with "The Grand Illusion," "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)," and "Come Sail Away," and these spill over to the first part of the second disc, which covers their prime period of Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone, and Paradise Theater, including all the big hits. Around this time, the song selection, which had been excellent until now, starts to slip, missing minor hits like "Why Me" and "Nothing Ever Goes as Planned," and ...
