Whitney Houston became an international star with this album. It sold more than ten million copies around the world, yielded a string of number one hit singles across the board like "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," "Didn't We Almost Have It All," and "Love Will Save the Day," and established Houston as the era's top female star. She later went on to more than solidify that status, with other hit albums and a budding film career. While this is a far cry from soul, it's the ultimate in polished, super-produced urban contemporary material. ~ Ron Wynn
Whitney Houston's second album sported a flirtier, sexier album cover and a shortened title, and, somewhat improbably, it became an even bigger hit than her 1985 debut. WHITNEY featured an impressive four Number One hits ("I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)," "Didn't We Almost Have It All," "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," and "So Emotional") and a fifth that went Top Ten, "Love Will Save the Day." Building on what had worked so well on her first record, the dance tracks are frothier and endearingly lighter, and the ballads are bigger and more dramatic, highlighting Houston's genuinely impressive vocal talents without resorting to overly bombastic singing (as she would on later albums). On WHITNEY, the diva shows surprising humility when it comes to her voice, and that restraint helps make it her most likable and consistently appealing set.Q (12/99, p.160) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...kept the pop juggernaut moving with the spirited 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'...over-stuffed with plinkety-plonk '80s synths..."

4 stars Excellent follow up
Whitney does it again, just 2 years after her debut in 1985, she hit big with this new sound in '87. She showed she can be sexy and flirtaious, and yet still be beautiful. With the two pop hits "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "So Emotional" and the stunning ballads "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "Didnt We Almost Have It All," she proved then that she would be around for years to come.

5 stars Her 2nd hottest album!!
Whitney did it again with this release as her follow-up to her first album almost two years earlier. She is really terrific in "I Wanna Dance..", "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?","You're Still My Man," and several others. Another fine job she did. A must have for any Whitney fan!

The legend of Whitney Houston began with this self-titled album. It marked her shift away from the experimental songs she did with the group Material and a move into heavily produced, very slick urban contemporary and adult pop. Although Houston had learned her craft working in New York nightclubs and singing in a Baptist church in Newark, she was steered into radio-friendly ballads that emphasized style over substance. The album did yield an unprecedented string of number one hits, but "Saving All My Love for You" and "How Will I Know" created an impression of an incredibly talented vocalist using only a minimum of her skills. It also contained ...

Producers include: Raphael Saadiq, Q-Tip, David Foster, Rodney Jerkins, Wyclef Jean.
Includes liner notes by Amy Linden.
Although Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits is a double-disc package (and is priced as such), only the first disc actually contains original versions of Houston's hit singles; the second disc, "The Greatest Remixes", collects remixes new and old to appeal to hardcore fans. Of course, it would be impossible to fit all of Houston's 20-plus chart singles onto one disc, but that single-disc format still could have produced a fantastic and near-definitive collection. That is, if Arista hadn't made the absolutely ridiculous choice not to include "How Will I Know," "So Emotional," "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," and "I'm Your Baby Tonight," all of them number one hits. Granted, those songs are all present on the accompanying second disc, The Greatest Remixes, but fans who want the original versions are out of luck and will have to purchase the three different albums on which those songs first appeared. That said, the compilation does do fans a few favors; there are three new tracks, including one duet apiece with Deborah Cox and Enrique Iglesias, and there are also two hits that have never actually appeared on a Houston album: "One Moment in Time" (the 1988 Olympic theme) and "If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful," a duet with Jermaine Jackson from his 1986 Precious Moments album. For the completist, Houston's Top 20 hit recording of "The Star-Spangled Banner," performed at Super Bowl XXV, is tacked on at ...
