This album contains two tributes to two other stellar guitarists. One of those is "Jiboom," which pays homage to Stevie Ray Vaughan, while "Frank" remembers Frank Zappa. Vai saw his career begin as a teenage stunt guitarist for Frank Zappa. Later, Mike Keneally performed the same role in a band backing Zappa. For this album, Keneally toured in Vai's band, but plays keyboards on the album. It is an amazing exhibition of six-string talent. ~ Tom Schulte
"Windows To The Soul" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Q (11/99, p.136) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...his most leftfield to date, as he lets his imagination (and fingers) run free over 13 largely experimental tracks....guitar aficionados will no doubt be marveling at Vai's mastery..." Steve Vai Ultra Zone Songs Ultra Zone Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Unlimited creativity An incredible album! It sounds fresh, crative and spontaneous. Includes one of Vai's most magical pieces "WINDOWS TO THE SOUL" and fantastic sounds and lyrics in "THE SILENT WITHIN". Steve is not only a guitar virtuoso, but an awesome composer. buy it now a great album, with melodies, exotism and ambiences as we loved in flexable.
The choice of the notes is always good and often gently surprising, more subtle than many others guitarits: that's why vai is a very good musician and not only a monstruous virtuoso.
So, ultrazone is a must... Submitted by a reviewer (tours, france) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Interesting but not so inspired I´ve been listening Vai since "passion and warfare", visiting his old tracks before, but in this one I felt the repetitions of "fire garden", not so inspired. Submitted by andre_750r (DF, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Ultra Zone album
$20.39 "OATES, TITUS", "JUNGLE LADY", "RADIOACTIVE RECORDS", "CD", "ROCK" This release shows the psychedelic side of the Texas blues-based power rock band
Titus Oates was a Dallas, TX, progressive hard rock five-piece that was never well known. The group's lone 1974 LP was only issued locally on the Lips label, and until this reissue from Radioactive the only way to hear the thing was to lay down hard cash for a shoddy bootleg -- an important point because, while it may not have the bombast of a major-label recording, Jungle Lady does not suffer from the murky sonics that dog most self-released records of this sort. Because it was a local pressing, it has been nearly impossible to locate, too; as a result, Titus Oates has been at the top of many collectors' want lists for years, its legend growing every time someone added it to a personal catalog of Holy Grails. Does it live up to the hype? Sort of. Jungle Lady is a competent curiosity ...
| | Mark Elf Glad To Be Back CD (2004)
Ultra Zone CD music
$15.35 The New York-based electric jazz guitarist's success over the years has shown the industry the power of the indie to overcome all usual obstacles. And then came some two much harder hits for Mark Elf to overcome -- a kidney disorder in 2002 and prostate cancer in 2003. While the liner notes, song titles, and written dedications speak of his gratitude for his doctors and the support of his friends from various radio stations, the album plays joyfully like the Elf his fans have known and loved for years. Getting ...

$15.15 The News-JournalDaytona, Fla4/12/02Saum stays true to great poetBy Rick deYampertENTERTAINMENT WRITERDouglas Lee SaumThe Wind, the Reeds, and the Seven Woods(Barbarous Generation Music)**** (of five)Talk about dysfunctional relationships . . .on his new CD The Wind, the Reeds, and the Seven Woods, Douglas Lee Saum has this to sing about a lover: "Were you but lying cold and dead, and lights were paling out of the West, you would come hither and bend your head, and I would lay my head on your breast. And you would murmur tender words, forgiving me, because you were dead . . . O would, beloved, that you lay under the dock-leaves in the ground, while lights were paling one by one."Is Saum a Marilyn Manson protege? A new millennium, vampiric goth rocker? No. Actually, Saum didn't write any of the lyrics for the 45 songs on his two-CD set. Instead, when the folkie guitarist and multi-instrumentalist went in search for a lyricist, he decided to hook up with a rather capable wordsmith named William Butler Yeats. Yes, that Yeats - the Nobel Prize-winning Irishman whom many critics consider the greatest 20th-century poet writing in the English language. So what's up with that death fetish? The lines come directly from the Yeats poem "He Wishes His Beloved Were Dead," written from the point of view of Aedh, the Celtic god of death. Likewise throughout the album, Saum doesn't merely adapt or otherwise monkey with Yeats's words as he puts them to music. The Reno, Nevada, folkie is utterly faithful in preserving these ...
| | Early Day Miners Offshore CD (2006)
Ultra Zone album
$12.99 While the Early Day Miners' song "Offshore," from the 2002 album Let Us Garlands Bring, is an eight-minute piece, sad and slow and contemplative, a brief look into the melancholy of life, their album Offshore is the continuous six-song immersion into longing and solitude and desire, something like an Eno soundscape (though there are vocal tracks) but with electric guitars and a live band. There's a dark and mechanical nature to the record, like a train barreling through a cold, deserted plain as the sun begins its long descent, travelers sitting silently in empty cars staring out into the gloaming. And though there's a lot of layering within the songs (besides the regular band, Early Day Miners use Dan Matz from Windsor for the Derby on guitar, and Darin Gray from Unwed Sailor and Johnathon Ford on prepared and electric bass, respectively), there's still an emptiness, or at least a sense of empty space, that comes with the reverby guitar lines, the echoing chords, and the airy vocals from Daniel Burton and guest Amber Webber (from Black Mountain). "Give into temptation," Burton softly pleads in "Sans Revival," though what exactly he's referring to, or if his words were even supposed to be understood, supposed to function as something ...
