Building A Better Me
$6.75 Live Recording
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals). Recorded in 1992. Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation of a self-aware yet powerless addict. Cantrell's technically limited but inventive guitar work is by turns explosive, textured, ...

| | System Of A Down Mezmerize CD (2005)
Building A Better Me
$9.99 P/A. Pt.1 Of A 2 Album Release For 2005.Prod.By Rick Rubin.
System of a Down: Shavo Odadjian (bass guitar); Daron Malakian, Serj Tankian, John Dolmayan. Personnel: Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar); Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards); John Dolmayan (drums). Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace. Editors: Dana Nielsen; Jason Lader. Adjectives like "ambitious," "jagged," and "startling" have always defined System of a Down, and their third official full-length is no different. Prerelease, the band described Mezmerize as being the first part -- the first side -- of what's essentially a double album. The records' packaging would even slot together, making the eventual Mezmerize/Hypnotize whole. Appropriately then, there's an intro to System's first new material since 2001's brilliant Toxicity. On "Soldier Side" Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian harmonize as they ...
| | Seether Karma & Effect CD (2005)
Building A Better Me
$8.89 Seether: Shaun Morgan (vocals, guitar); Pat Callahan (guitar); Dale Stewart (bass guitar); John Humphrey (drums). Seether follows in the tough-yet-sensitive tradition of Staind, Nickelback, and other grunge-aping power ballad hitmakers, although this band's road to the top may have been a little rougher than most. They have had their fair share of dues paying, touring solidly for over a year just to hit gold with Disclaimer in 2003 and then touring again in 2004 for the messy repackage Disclaimer II, which also only mustered gold sales. Add to that the fans displeased with the repackage and near-fans displeased that Seether were hard rockers and not a ballad machine as "Broken," the duet with Evanescence's Amy Lee that spurred the release of Disclaimer II, indicated. Their sophomore effort has been beset with its own pre-release woes, mostly label concessions that singer Shaun Morgan has been quite vocal about. The original title of Catering to Cowards was ditched in favor of the less biting Karma and Effect, ...

| | Sword Age Of Winters CD (2006)
Building A Better Me
$9.49 Coming to grips with the Sword's unlikely genesis in the alternative music Mecca of Austin, TX, leads one to wonder whether heavy metal has finally become hip again. Depending on your generation, nothing will seem as simultaneously preposterous (Gen-X'ers who came of age during pop-metal's heyday and don't recognize it as an unrepresentative anomaly) or obvious (everyone else) when discussing a genre that's spent the bulk of its 35-year history on the absolute fringe of rock culture. If that isn't "alternative," well, what is? In any case, glorifying heavy metal's prototypical qualities is exactly what the Sword is all about, and their 2006 debut, Age of Winters, sees them joining California's High ...
